    Regional Book Festival Celebrates 10 Years, Expands to Year-Long Event

    After 10 years of bringing the region’s biggest and best book festival to downtown Cincinnati, Books by the Banks is expanding its reach with a brand-new lineup of events, culminating with the 10th annual Books by the Banks Cincinnati Regional Book Festival this fall. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors.     A Note from the Dean: IFLA Comes to Cincinnati

    This August, the International Federation of Libraries (IFLA) will host their yearly conference in Columbus, Ohio. Last fall, I posted about my experience at the IFLA conference in South Africa. While at the time I knew that UC would be involved in some of the conference events this summer, I am excited to tell you now in more detail what is coming and what role UC Libraries and I will play in welcoming these international visitors.     UC Libraries Welcomes the Newest Bearcats

    This summer, Langsam Library is a busy place as over 4,000 incoming students participating in UC’s New Student Orientation visit and learn about the spaces, places and people of UC Libraries. While in Langsam, they engage in activities designed to be both entertaining and informative about the various research resources, assistance and services they can utilize when they begin classes in the fall, including the Starbucks café currently under construction and scheduled to open in August.     March “Life of the Mind” Lecture to Feature Heidi L. Maibom

    Life of the Mind, interdisciplinary conversations with UC faculty, will return Tuesday, March 29, 3:30-5pm in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center with a lecture by Heidi L. Maibom, professor of philosophy in the McMicken College of Arts and Sciences, who will speak on “Know Others to Know Thyself: Uses and Misuses of Taking Another’s Perspective.” Life of the Mind is a semi-annual lecture series that features a distinguished University of Cincinnati faculty member presenting his or her work and expertise.     On Saturday, October 17, the 9th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will take place downtown at Duke Energy Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors. The day-long festival will feature over 100 regional and national authors, book signings, author panels and activities for the entire family to enjoy.     Celebrating William Shakespeare

    Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it. Of all the many lines about death that William Shakespeare wrote for his plays, perhaps his words from Macbeth best describe his own departure. Shakespeare was certainly successful during his lifetime for his comedies and dramas, but he left London and the Globe Theatre for Stratford well before he died.     The 2014-15 academic year has been one of exploration, innovation and collaboration for UC Libraries.
