A Note from the Dean: Introducing our NEXT Directions
As announced in our Annual Progress Report, this year the faculty and staff of UC Libraries undertook an endeavor to update our existing Strategic Plan, building on success of our Strategic Plan implementation, bringing in initiatives from the Provost-led Strategic Sizing priorities and aligning them with UC’s NEXT Lives Here Strategic Directions. What has resulted is a new Strategic Framework for UC Libraries that we are calling our NEXT Directions. Through fulfillment of our NEXT Directions, the University of Cincinnati Libraries aims to increase our impact by: creating paths to education innovation and student success; contributing to the university’s research, learning and teaching agendas; and by creating partnerships within…

Mikaila Corday Awarded the 2022 Marian Spencer Equity Ambassador Award for Staff
Mikaila Corday, serials cataloger in the Electronic Resources Department at the University of Cincinnati Libraries, in a ceremony held April 12 was honored to receive the 2022 Marian Spencer Equity Ambassador Award for Staff. Named for the celebrated civil rights activist, this award is designed to showcase current campus-affiliated individuals and groups whose efforts related to diversity, equity and inclusion have had a positive impact on the university. Mikaila was nominated by her colleagues for her work to promote awareness of diversity, equity, and inclusion; for exhibiting sensitivity to people of various cultures; facilitating growth among colleagues and peers; preparing students, faculty and staff to thrive in a diverse and global workforce; and for collaborating with colleagues to…

Student Spotlight: Marvin Jones
This academic year, sophomore communications major Marvin Jones joined UC Libraries as an OhioLINK Luminaries intern. As part of the program, Marvin is working in various departments and units, including the Press, Archives and Rare Books and Content Services. As part of the OhioLINK Library Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Initiative, the Luminaries Program offers students a unique, paid opportunity in academic libraries not available in traditional internships or part-time campus employment. As a resume-building position offering hands-on experience, the OhioLINK Luminaries students receive a broad introduction to the information studies profession—its purpose, value and expertise. Oesper Museum Receives National Landmark Award
By Ted Baldwin, Director, Science and Engineering Libraries On March 15, 2022, nearly 100 people representing the University of Cincinnati, the American Chemical Society and the regional community of scientific and museum professionals gathered to celebrate the recognition of the University of Cincinnati’s Ralph E. Oesper Museum and Collections in the History of Chemistry as an American Chemical Society National Historic Chemical Landmark. The ACS National Landmark program recognizes seminal achievements in the chemical sciences in order to enhance public appreciation for contributions of the chemical sciences to modern life. The Illustrated Human: The Impact of Andreas Vesalius
This past academic year, the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions, along with University of Cincinnati Libraries and the UC College of Medicine, celebrated the seminal work of Andreas Vesalius with a series of online and in-person lectures and exhibits. The series, titled “The Illustrated Human: The Impact of Andreas Vesalius,” ran from October 2021 through March 2022 and provided an in-depth look and study of this monumental book of human anatomy first published in 1543. Andreas Vesalius was a Renaissance anatomist and physician who revolutionized the study and practice of medicine through his careful description of the anatomy of the human body. And the Winners are…Results of the 2022 UC Libraries International Edible Books Festival
The University of Cincinnati Libraries celebrated the International Edible Books Festival on Friday, April 1, 2022. Sixteen edible books were created by students, faculty, staff, librarians, friends and family. The entries ranged from children’s books to literary classics to popular fiction and nonfiction books. The edible books were made of cakes, cookies, Rice Krispie Treats, candy, Peeps, olives and even carrots. Each entry was judged by our esteemed judges Rachel Hoople and Imani Coleman and awarded a bookmark. Created by librarian Judith A.
