Join UC Libraries at Books by the Banks
On Saturday, October 20, the 12th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will take place downtown at Duke Energy Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors. The day-long festival will feature over 150 regional and national authors, book signings, author panels and activities for the entire family to enjoy. All events are free and open to the public. At the festival, attendees will have the opportunity to meet authors and to purchase signed copies of their books. Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library Selected to Host Traveling Exhibition about Native Concepts of Health and Illness
The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library has been selected in a competitive application process to host Native Voices: Native Peoples’ Concepts of Health and Illness, a traveling exhibition to U.S. libraries. Native Voices explores the interconnectedness of wellness, illness and cultural life for Native Americans, Alaska Natives and Native Hawaiians. Stories drawn from both the past and present examine how health for Native People is tied to community, the land and spirit. Through interviews, Native People describe the impact of epidemics, federal legislation, the loss of land, and the inhibition of culture on the health of Native individuals and communities today. The University of Cincinnati Libraries Have Joined HathiTrust
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have joined HathiTrust, a partnership of major research institutions and libraries working to ensure that the cultural record is preserved and accessible long into the future by collaboratively collecting, organizing, preserving, communicating and sharing the record of human knowledge. UC Libraries joins more than 130 international research libraries in HathiTrust, and is the third Ohio library to join along with The Ohio State University and Case Western Reserve University. “Membership in HathiTrust will enable the University of Cincinnati Libraries to partner with national and international collaborators with similar missions to preserve, protect and make accessible the scholarly record,” said Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian.…

Streamlined Searching and Management of Archival Collections Implemented at UC Libraries

What do the polio vaccine, animated film music, folklore, the Heimlich maneuver and labor unions have in common? They are all subjects of archival collections in the Archives and Rare Books Library and at the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions. Archival collections are papers or records of a person, family or organization and includes things like correspondence, photographs, meeting minutes and reports. Scholar@UC Upgrade Enhances the Repository’s Use and Access
This spring, the Libraries announced that Scholar@UC, the University of Cincinnati’s digital repository, was updated to include enhanced submission and viewing features. The upgrade included: improved look & feel content dashboard for easier management of submitted works batch work creation and upload – upload an entire folder of works simultaneously or create multiple works at once including from folders usage analytics of content (views and downloads) new work-relation model allowing works to be nested and related in meaningful ways social media sharing widgets. Appointments Eira Tansey, digital archivist/records manager in the Archives and Rare Books Library, was appointed to the Society of American Archivists (SAA) Committee on Public Policy, a national committee that does the legwork behind virtually all SAA public policy statements and press releases regarding “record keeping issues in the news” – including recent statements on law enforcement body-camera footage, violations of FOIA and other matters of public record keeping interest.
