Distinguished Panel Discusses “African American Physicians in Cincinnati: Past, Present & Future”

Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions and the Cecil Striker Society hosted its eighth annual Cecil Striker Society Annual Lecture in UC’s Kresge Auditorium. This year’s event, titled “African American Physicians in Cincinnati: Past, Present & Future,” featured a multi-generational panel discussion moderated by Dr. Elbert Nelson and including Drs. Chester C. Pryor, II, Charles Dillard, Camille Graham, and Christopher Lewis. Each panelist discussed their personal stories, including obstacles and successes as African American physicians, their early mentors, heroes and more. Libraries Receive Gift from the John Hauck Foundation
The University of Cincinnati Libraries is pleased to announce a gift from the John Hauck Foundation for the digitization of Dr. Albert B. Sabin’s lab notebooks. Dr. Sabin was a celebrated medical researcher and virologist who was best known for developing an oral polio vaccine that played a critical role in the eradication of the disease. He conducted his research for the vaccine at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Research Foundation before and after WWII. He went on to have a storied career within the medical community as well as in academia. These extensive archives are held at the Henry R. A New Look at Digital Collections
Imagine a place where through a computer, tablet or mobile device one could go to view such diverse collections as the House of Refuge Records, the creation of the Triceracopter sculpture, Albert B. Sabin’s archives about his quest to create the oral polio vaccine, as well as images of Great Houses of Cincinnati from environmental artist Alice Weston. This central, online place would also have exhibits about the 25th General Hospital: Courage and Skill in World War II, Promotion through Playing Cards, and Sublime and Beautiful Mountain Scenery among other captivating subjects. Student workers play a vital part in the daily operation of UC Libraries. From assisting users with checking out materials to trouble shooting technology problems to helping new students locate the stacks, student workers help the libraries to achieve our mission to “empower discovery, stimulate learning and inspire the creation of knowledge by connecting students, faculty, researchers and scholars to dynamic data, information and resources.” Annually, we recognize those student workers who perform their job at the highest level with the University of Cincinnati Library Student Award for Quality Service. Displaying the Armstrong Collection
Thanks to support from the University of Cincinnati President’s office, we are pleased to announce a new permanent public exhibit recognizing Neil A. Armstrong and his time as a professor at the University of Cincinnati, 1971-1979. Located at the entrance of the College of Engineering and Applied Science Library, this exhibit brings together many objects and documents donated by the Armstrong family that are part of the University Archives housed in the Archives and Rare Books Library. The display represents many aspects of Mr. Armstrong’s life and accomplishments. Highlights are a flight mask and gear from his work as a test pilot (ca. 1960s), an encapsulated heat shield from the…
