Join UC Libraries at Books by the Banks October 17
On Saturday, October 17, the 9th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will take place downtown at Duke Energy Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors. The day-long festival will feature over 100 regional and national authors, book signings, author panels and activities for the entire family to enjoy. The popular “Writing and Getting Published” series returns this year with panel discussions covering hot topics for writers and workshops to help hone the craft of writing. A Note from the Dean: An Update on UC Libraries’ Strategic Initiatives
Last May, the University of Cincinnati Libraries launched our Strategic Plan. Strategic plans are common in organizations today, both in the public and private sector. They set priorities, create a strategy and help companies identify a common direction to pursue. And while the thoughtful creation of a strategic plan is incredibly important, so is its implementation. For the first year of UC Libraries’ Strategic Plan we set ambitious goals, including last fall the launch of 10 strategic initiatives. Celebrating William Shakespeare
Nothing in his life became him like the leaving it. Of all the many lines about death that William Shakespeare wrote for his plays, perhaps his words from Macbeth best describe his own departure. Shakespeare was certainly successful during his lifetime for his comedies and dramas, but he left London and the Globe Theatre for Stratford well before he died. His reputation became somewhat obscure after that, though with the publication of the First Folio in 1623 just a few years after his death in a single volume that gathered his known plays, interest in his work revived to the point that there shall never be any abatement in studies…

An Interview with Lori Harris, NLM Associate Fellow
In September, Lori Harris joined UC Libraries for the second year of her National Library of Medicine Associate Fellow Program. Lori received her MSLS from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and her BA from Smith College. The National Library of Medicine (NLM) Associate Fellowship Program is a one-year postgraduate training fellowship at the NLM in Bethesda, Maryland, with an optional second year program component at a participating library. The program is designed to provide a broad foundation in health sciences information services and to prepare librarians for future leadership roles in health sciences libraries and in health services research. Introducing the Informatics Lab: A Collaborative Space for Innovation at the Health Sciences Library
The Informatics Lab is a new space in the Donald C. Harrision Health Sciences Library and is designed for innovative and collaborative hands-on learning experiences and discussions. It is a place for UC researchers and graduate students to connect, collaborate and to receive research support services. Open from 9am – 5pm, the Informatics Lab provides students at the Academic Health Center with software programs (listed below) and equipment not available in the normal computer lab. Collaborating on the Joint Engineering Co-Op Institute
For two years, the University of Cincinnati College of Engineering and Applied Sciences has partnered with Chongqing University (CQU) to form the Joint Engineering Co-op Institute (JCI). Each fall, CQU and UC co-host an orientation for first-year students on their Huxi campus located in a suburb of Chongqing. This campus is reserved for first and second- year students at the university. This year, for the third time, a delegation from UC was sent to participate in the orientation.
