Paper & Book Intensive 2026: A First-timers Recap

I was fortunate enough to attend Paper and Book Intensive (PBI) for the first time this year as part of my annual staff development. If you are not familiar with PBI, it is a non-profit group that hosts an annual sabbatical-style work retreat that focuses on book arts, papermaking, and conservation. It takes place in Saugatuck, Michigan at the OxBow School of Art and is structured into two sessions, and each session lasts four days. Each attendee takes two classes during the first session and one class during the second session. The first session is broken up into a morning class and an afternoon class, while the second session classes are full day and more intensive.

When you apply to PBI you rate your preferences of classes. If you are accepted, you are then placed in classes based on availability and demand. Again, I was incredibly lucky and I was placed in all of my top choices for classes. For session one: American and English Boarded Bindings, 1780-1830 with Todd Pattison (AM session) and Marbling on Paper with Steve Pittelkow (PM session). For the second session: Madagos: The Living Tradition of Ethiopian Bookbinding with Bill Hanscom.

Todd brought a host of historical examples for us to examine, including volumes printed in Britian and America, which was fantastic.

During the class we created two models: one cutaway and one paper-covered model. Both models were sewn on two recessed cords with an abbreviated, two-on sewing pattern. Once the text blocks were sewn, a layer of wheat starch paste was applied to the spine. Then the spines were rounded and backed. For the cutaway model, one board was attached by lacing the cords through the board, which is more commonly seen on the British boarded bindings, while the other board was attached by simply combing out the cords and adhered it down to the board, which is more commonly seen with American boarded bindings. For the paper-covered model we could attach the boards however we liked (I chose lacing them on). Todd was then kind enough to prepare additional materials for us, so that we could make an extra third models if we wanted. I chose to cut my third model (landscape oriented originally) into two small models. I then made a smaller cutaway model and small quarter binding model with marbled paper (an “extra” boarded binding) using marbled paper I had just created in my afternoon class.

Though I have been paper marbling for years, I was super excited to take this class from Steve, because he is such an amazingly precise pattern-maker and his colors are so bright and vibrant. Little did I know before the class, we would be using acrylics, which is the one type of marbling media I really haven’t worked with too much, and definitely haven’t come close to mastering. My foundational experience with marbling has been in traditional Turkish marbling with watercolor pigments, and then I’ve also experimented with the dye-based pigments that are used in fabric marbling. But using acrylics was a whole new exciting world for me and I learned so much from the class. I also greatly improved my pattern making. I’ve always been someone who is very fond of a stone or a drawn stone pattern (a stone pattern that is manipulated with a stylus), but when it came to using combs and/or rakes to make intricate patterns I would shy away or be lazy in my pattern making practices. Steve’s focus on marbling best practices and following a rhythm in your movements as you are pulling more intricate patterns, working around the bath in a methodical, precise way, was so helpful and something I will carry with me going forward.

Ethiopian Bookbinding with Bill Hanscom

Following a wonderful Show & Tell where we got to see all of the amazing projects from all the classes during session one, we had a short break and then proceeded into session two, which for me meant Ethiopian Bookbinding. I was super excited about this class, partly because of the recent release of Bill Hanscom’s (the instructor) new book Ethiopian Bookbinding Tradition, and partly because I was sitting across from Bill throughout the Boarded Bindings class and they announced that they had over-prepared and brought a ton of extra models. Basically, the participants would have PLENTY to work on, and then some! I couldn’t wait. For book nerds, this was basically a declaration that we would be kids in a candy shop, and they weren’t joking. Here is proof that Bill was indeed not lying about their preparation, which was quite extensive and so well-organized:

Bill also had two exemplars of Ethiopian binding, both of which showed traits we would be replicating throughout the class; a smaller volume (pictured in the first gallery below, belonging to Todd Pattison) and a larger binding (pictured in the second gallery below, belonging to Bill).

The class was a true immersive experience in Ethiopian bookbinding, with Bill really aiming to give us a taste of as many aspects of the tradition as they possibly could. From thread making out of deer sinew and parchment to hand-drilling our tunnels in our wooden boards with a heated awl, though for practicality sake and the sake of our poor awls, we just did that as a practice on a sample board and we used a pin-vise and a gimlet to drill and bore the holes for the rest of our models. Bill even constructed their own parchment adze, an Ethiopian took used to remove the hair from the skin of the hide, from a branch found at OxBow (see below).

Throughout the workshop we made two primary wooden board models with paired station sewing (four sewing stations, using 4 needs and two lengths of thread) and the “typical lacing hole arrangement” which is the most commonly seen example of board attachment (and what is used on the two exemplars). Of the two primary models we were creating, one was to be covered in leather. Prior to covering we added textile board linings and leather patches. Once covered, we created leather endbands that were then attached to the inner joints and anchored along the head and tail. The model was then blind tooled. Naturally, Bill had a plethora of historical examples of tooling designs for the class to look at for inspiration.

In addition, we could also make a textile over-cover, which I opted to do for my second model, since the over-cover is sewn around the book and meant to stay on. And then on the final day we made leather satchels. I was one of the few who opted for the more strenuous double-walled satchel (for my second model), which meant punching through three layers of thick leather in multiples sections of the satchel, but I’m very happy with how the satchel turned out. It even has a pull string to allow you to remove the book more easily, as it is meant to be a snug fit (which mine is!).

Bill also prepared additional boards and text blocks for class participants, if they were interested, encouraging us to try three station sewing at our leisure. For those who were interested, we dyed some cotton thread red in order for us to better see the various three station sewing patterns. Of those, I tried the hook variation and the pick-up variation. I also split the board of one of these models so that I could repair it it with a common thread repair.

Overall, it was a wonderful experience, and I walked away with so much knowledge and appreciation for the traditions, materials I worked with, and the new people I met.

Preservation Lab Open House – April 30th, 2026

Please join the Preservation Lab (300 Langsam Library) for our annual open house on Thursday, April 30th, in celebration of ALA’s Preservation Week. There will be cookies, bookmarks and stickers!

3D Imaging Workshop in the Lab

This past December, the Lab hosted a small 3D Imaging workshop for a group of digital imaging colleagues. The workshop was led by UC School of Art professors, Jordan Tate and John-David Richardson. Colleagues from Ohio University Libraries, the Ohio State University Libraries, Library of Michigan, Veterans Affairs History Office in Dayton and UC Libraries were able to join us for this amazing opportunity to learn practical, high-resolution 3D imaging techniques using a simple setup.

Prior to the workshop, I had worked with UC Libraries special collections curators to attain a selection of various objects for imaging ranging from cuneiform tablets to plaster busts. For the workshop, we began with a painted wooden Nigerian statue from the Winkler Center. We walked through the imaging process first, using a fairly standard DSLR manual setup and a ring flash with a polarized filter. The object was placed on a motorized turn-table which allows you to determine how many rotations or shots you want per angle.

Once all the images were captured, we moved onto the processing portion, using Agisoft Metashape Professional Educational edition.

After lunch we ran through another imaging and processing session, to reinforce what we had learned in the morning. Overall the day was incredibly successful and I am beyond grateful to Jordan and John-David for sharing their time, knowledge and passion for 3D imaging with the group. They truly made the imaging capture and processing experience fun and attainable!

Following the workshop, fellow Assistant Conservator, Catarina, and I were able to get some 3D imaging practice in; using what we had learned in the workshop and putting it into action. This was made possible by two very important factors: first, Jordan had graciously loaned us his equipment to use before the ’26 Spring semester began, including his polarized flash ring, and second, we had a couple of slower days, following our special collections returns and prior to winter break, which afforded both Catarina and I this time to learn and hone this new technique.

In the end, Catarina and I ended up imaging three additional objects, including a Gothic manuscript from the Archives and Rare Books Library, a plaster bust of Antoine Lavoisier from the Oesper Collection, and a combat medic statue from the Winker Center.

When you THINK you know the difference between handmade and machine-made paper!

We were delighted to have Dr. Cathleen Baker come to UC for 4 days to teach us all about paper, paper making and printing in a collaborative programming and outreach workshop entitled Identification of Western Hand- & Machine-Made Paper, 1750-1900. The workshop included Preservation Lab staff, staff from UC Libraries Archives and Rare Books Library and the Content Services department, and Kathy Lechuga from Signature Conservation.

With Cathy’s teaching and guidance, we soon discovered some of the key characteristics is in handmade paper and how the introduction of machine-made paper just made everything more complicated. Oof, that dandy roller… But it was so exciting to make discoveries in the paper and learn new tips for paper identification. This will be particularly helpful for Preservation Lab staff when we do our examination of items for treatment proposals.

We are all beyond grateful to Cathy for sharing her immense knowledge and expertise with us. We all learned so much about handmade and machine-made paper and printing. Here’s just a taste of the workshop and us examining special collections items from the ARB Library and the Science Library collections:

We also took a field trip to the Cincinnati Type & Print Museum to get a paper understanding of printing. It was a fantastic experience! A big thank you to Gary and his staff for a wonderful time printing and a great tour.

Retelling Scary Stories

It’s been a busy year in the Lab, and frankly we kind of lost track of our usual Halloween festivities this year. So in lieu of something big, new and grand, I thought I’d share some of the fantastic content we’ve created in years past.

Our Halloween Instagram festivities truly began in 2021 when we hosted five days of Preservation Horrors, complete with a skull rating system and everything!

In 2022 we had another multi-day event called the Haunting of the Preservation Lab where we highlighted tools, equipment and materials that appear in horror movies, but that we also use daily in the Lab. Followed by a fun “actual” haunting of the Lab!

The board shear…always intimidating to new students and staff when they start, and maybe for good reason!?

Solvents are our friends, when used safely…but Chris made a fun mad scientist!

Don’t forget to check out Catarina with the foam saw…it is pretty terrifying! And then there is the Haunting of the Preservation Lab, and part two, which makes question everything…

In 2023 we shared Scary Stories from the Stacks, which included sights from the stacks that strike fear into the hearts of conservation professionals!

Then we received several stories from staff about strange occurrences and happenings in the libraries over the years we recreated those as reels…

Faux Jacket-Sling Hybrid?

I recently created a cloth covered clamshell enclosure for this small leather volume from the Cincinnati & Hamilton County Public Library. The volume has eight full color miniatures which received surrogate photography. The surrogates were printed to roughly 5×7 inches, making them substantially larger than the text, so an insert was created within the cloth clamshell to house the smaller volume.

To build up the enclosure to the size of the surrogates, an insert was created using archival corrugated board covered in Cotlin bookcloth. I lined the portion of the insert where the volume would rest with thin Ethafoam sheeting, so the fragile leather edges wouldn’t be abraded.

To aid in lifting the volume from the enclosure I created a partial polyester wrapper of sorts. Part jacket, part sling. A faux jacket-sling hybrid, if you will?

Overall, I think it’s a quick and easy solution that could be beneficial in future situations where a simple modification of an existing enclosure is needed, but space within the enclosure is at a premium.

Congratulations, Linh & Kristopher!

This past Friday two of our Conservation Student Assistants received their bachelor’s degrees from UC! Congratulations Linh (Psychology) and Kristopher (Art History)!! We are so proud of both of you!

They both started in the Preservation Lab in January of 2022 and it has been so exciting to see them grow as students, members of our team and people over that time period!

On Friday I was tickled when Linh, who is leaving UC for grad school in Illinois to pursue a future as a therapist, reached out to me asking to come down to the Lab for a picture. I immediately let Kristopher know, suspecting that he might want to join in. Kristopher will be continuing on with us in the Lab, continuing his education at UC’s law school.

Linh and Kristopher then asked if I could snap some photos of them around the Lab…a request I could not turn down.

Moments like these are the true reminders of why being a student supervisor is so rewarding. To see students graduating, on the precipice of something new and big, and looking back at their time in the Lab with such fondness is really special and powerful. Congratulations to two amazing students! We wish you a smooth journey ahead through graduate school!

Fun with PhotoDoc – X-rays and CT scans, Oh My!

An alternate title to this blog could be, “That time we X-rayed medieval choir book at the UC Medical Center, and then the pandemic happened I forgot to write a blog post about it”. Oops!

Let’s rewind the story back to mid-2019, when our Associate Conservator, Ashleigh, expressed interest in radiography on a beautiful, oversized choir book from the Classics Library. I, at the time, was the Photographic Documentation Specialist and had never carried out or assisted with any radiography projects, so I was very keen to start reaching out to anyone I could think of on West and East campus who might have access to such equipment. The most logical answer, UC Health, proved to be the winning one when finally the Director of Diagnostic Radiology put me in contact with the Enterprise Director of Imaging, who said yes to my request, and ultimately put me in contact with my main contact for the project, the Radiology Manager at UC Medical Center.

The date was set, October 22, 2019. Ashleigh, Holly and I packed up the heavy, choir book and carefully transported it from West campus to East campus to be imaged. The UC Health staff were beyond friendly, and I think they got a kick out of imaging the oversized leather volume. The technician really worked with us to adjust the intensity of the radiography depending on what we were trying to capture, whether it was the cover, the sewing and the supports, or the illuminated text (which was a little harder to capture with their equipment).

Overall, we discovered…a lot of nails, split thong supports, and on the lower board, four mends to the wooden board that appear to be bracing a split in the wood that is running vertically.

Then following the radiography session, they were kind enough to ask if we would also like to place the volume in the CT scanner. Since the scanner could easily and safely accommodate the volume while keeping it wrapped in foam, we jumped at the chance!

We received all the imaging files on two CDs from UC Health, and then I went about making heads and tails of it. The radiography images were fairly straightforward. For the most impactful imaging, namely of the spine, upper and lower boards, I created composite images using the panorama feature in Photoshop to merge the images. For example, each cover consisted of four separate images.

With the CT imaging, the CD came with a reviewer software (Sorna) to view the files. Frankly, the CT scans were a little bit harder to comprehend, but nonetheless interesting. Ultimately the CT scanner allows you to view the various materials within the object. Whereas normally for the equipment that was used that would mean bones, organs and tissues, for the choir book that meant metal material like brass, leather, ink and pigment. Within the viewer function there was also an interactive component to the CT data as well, which allowed you to manipulate various levels to see various intensities, but even after a lot of trail and error and experimentation I found it very confusing, though I did get some interesting, and some less impactful, results. Let’s just say, I do not have a future as a CT technician!  I’ll stick to my day job.

Problem Solving: An Exhibition-Style Enclosure for a Collection of Lafcadio Hearn Japanese Bindings

This set of Japanese side-sewn, crepe paper bindings, or Chirimen-bon, came to the Preservation Lab housed in their damaged traditional Japanese wraparound case, known as a maru chitsu. The set belongs to the Cincinnati and Hamilton County Public Library, which has an extensive Lafcadio Hearn collection. This collection of volumes was printed by Hasegawa Takejirō, a Japanese publisher who specialized in books written in European languages on Japanese subjects. The Japanese Fairy Tale Series was one of the more popular series, beginning with six volumes in 1885; though this later collection only has five volumes of fairy tales. Lacadio Hearn was one of the foreign translators employed by T. Hasegawa.

Due to the high profile nature of Lafcadio Hearn for the library and the beauty of the bindings, the collection is often shown during tours and used for display, however, the crepe paper volumes, while in excellent condition, are extremely floppy, and they are also side-sewn, both factors make them difficult to handle and display. The original enclosure is also very fragile and damaged, and susceptible to further damage if used as an enclosure moving forward. For all these reasons, the curators wanted an enclosure that would not only store the collection long-term, but could also be used for display.

This proved to be a challenge, but a fun one. I started by making a couple of sketches and then a couple of models…

For the models, I had two main focuses: 1) a collapsible cradle that would house and display one of the volumes, and 2) a display component that would act as a tray or level within the enclosure and house the remaining four volumes, in two stacks of two, side by side.

I will always advocate for making a model if you are trying to work through a new enclosure or adjust an existing enclosure or display piece, like a cradle. For example, I knew that a normal collapsible cradle wasn’t going to fit the bill for these volumes. Instead, I was going to need a stiff, squared off spine piece built into the cradle to help support the bindings’ spines.

One of the main areas I had to troubleshoot was the display tray, which would house the four remaining volumes. I knew I wanted to create a stand that would basically replicate one side of a collapsible cradle and have a 1/2 inch Plastazote foam insert, which happened to nestle the thickness of two volumes perfectly, that was covered in Tyvek. But I had concerns about gravity and reliability of PVA to hold the foam insert in place overtime. And I wasn’t happy with my initial ideas of how to remove the volumes (and also the original enclosure and collapsible cradle) from the insert(s), which consisted of a tab underneath the volume. It created friction that would ultimately cause damage to the actual volumes.

Ultimately, I am extremely happy with what I came up with. I think it functions very well, and checks all the boxes it needed to check. Safe, secure storage. Elegant display. User-friendly.

The display stand includes a cloth tape inserted into the boards to keep it from opening too far, a foam insert covered in Tyvek, a lip to support the foam insert overtime, and two polyester film slings to aid in removing the volumes from the foam insert. The polyester slings proved to be an excellent solution for removing all the elements from the enclosure safely and easily.

For those interested in how some of the components were constructed, here are some in-progress images…

Because of the way the trays/components of the enclosure are constructed, they are actually interchangeable. So if the “lower tray” with the original enclosure and collapsible cradle ends up on top of the display tray/stand, that’s not an issue at all. And there is a 1/4 inch Volara foam piece adhered to the outer tray of the clamshell enclosure, so whatever items are on top will be cushioned by soft foam in the enclosure.

Are You Ready for Halloween?

With Halloween creeping up, it’s either a chance for you to unleash your spooky side or to totally panic and obsess over costumes until the last second. Ghost? Meh. Mummy? Boring. Werewolf? Too hairy. But if you work in a conservation lab, fear not. We have you covered!  

This year, we’ve scoured the lab to create costumes that mix chilling creativity with eccentric conservation tools! Each costume has a difficulty rating, so you’ll know if it takes professional skill or just a wildly spooky imagination. 

So, grab some supplies, get haunting, and remember: Conservation may be reversible, but goofy Halloween memories are forever!

  • Strong hands (those old scissors may refuse to work properly)

Note – Not recommended for the long-haired among us…so remember, safety first! Keep a safe distance, and beware of those “accidental” snips, unless your colleagues think that you desperately need “just a little trim off the top”.

  • Binder’s board to create a body/chalk outline (create a tri-fold for easy travel)
  • Golden gloss/matte media (or anything that fluoresces) to create “blood” splatters
  • Polyethylene bags (to collect evidence)
  • UV lamp
  • Protective UV goggles
  • Fluorescent scale (optional)
  • Camera (optional)
  • Tripod (optional)
  • A strong stomach, not for the faint of heart

Note – For the body outline, just kindly convince a colleague to lie on the binder’s board. Nothing says “team building” like creating a fake crime scene!

The following costumes can be done as a group effort or a solo act – dealer’s choice!

Vigo the Carpathian (Painting)
Difficulty level – Hard
Materials and tools needed:

  • Print out of Vigo the Carpathian – our Lab recently switched to a 17″ wide Epson printer, so we are unable to print large scale items, so Jessica skillfully created the painting with two printouts pieced together.
  • Corrugated board
  • Cloth tapes (to create handles on the back of the painting)
  • Gold spray paint
  • Double-sided tape
  • Black/dark clothing
  • Strong arms and captivating eyes

Note – For that eerie stare DON’T FORGET to remove the eyes from the print out…the creepier, the better!

Sigourney Weaver (as “Paintings Conservator”)
Difficulty level – Easy
Materials and tools needed:

  • Lab coat
  • OptiVisor
  • Acrylic paints
  • Gloves
  • Cotton swab
  • Beaker with filtered water
  • Paint brushes
  • Vigo printing proof, as reference (optional)
  • Must not be easily spooked by creepy eyes staring into your soul

Note – We know we aren’t a paintings conservation lab, but I think we pulled it off…or at least better than the movie, I hope!?

Ghostbuster / Bill Murray as Dr. Peter Venkman
Difficulty level – Easy
Materials and tools needed:

  • Jumpsuit from your favorite brand (Dickies, Albion Fit, etc.)
  • Nilfisk GD 10 Back HEPA Vacuum (Proton Pack)
  • Print out of Ghostbusters logo
  • Double-sided tape
  • Portable fan (for special effects)
  • Must be courageous yet capture the whimsy and humor of Bill Murray! Ready for anything!

Note – A portable fan can really elevate the special effects for this costume! Just check out our Instagram reel to see for yourself…
