Get to Know the Clermont College Library Staff: Penny McGinnis

IMG_0087-flat-120I’ve worked in libraries for over twenty years. I started out at the Lynchburg branch of the Highland County District Libraries as a children’s librarian. Then I moved to Lynchburg-Clay public school and worked in K-8 and K-5 libraries. In 2006 I started working in technical services at Clermont College Library.

A favorite part of my multi-layered job is sharing library information through social media. The library uses Facebook, Twitter, and our LiBlog in the social media world. I enjoy connecting with our faculty, staff, and students.

When I’m not at work, I write for my own blog where I review books, share devotional thoughts, poetry, photos, and art. My husband and I enjoy sports, hiking, and spending time with our children and grandchildren.

You might be surprised to know that I coached high school volleyball for two years, while my youngest daughter played. That surprised me too!

A few of my favorite things:

Books-the Bible, cozy mysteries & anything set on the east coast, especially Maine

Music-Casting Crowns, Matt Redman, and 70s pop/folk

Movie-You’ve Got Mail & Letters to Julia

Children’s Books at Clermont College Library

Get to Know the Clermont College Library Staff: Katie Foran-Mulcahy

IMG_0258-flat-120I have worked in libraries for almost 12 years.  My first library job was as a shelver at the Lexington Public Library.  After graduate school Iaccepted a full-time Instructional Services Librarian job at Berea College, where I worked for two years.  My next job was as a librarian at the Clermont County Public Libraryin Amelia where I focused on Adult Services and Reference.  I loved working in Clermont County but missed the academic setting, so I applied for an opening at UC Clermont’s library in 2010.  After working as a Reference and Instruction Librarian here for a few years I became interested in library leadership and served as the Interim Director for 18 months.  The Dean appointed me as Director in July 2015.

I love planning and thinking about the future of library facilities and services.  Despite huge changes in the information landscape, libraries continue to focus on providing engaging spaces, promoting access to information, and teaching critical thinking skills.  All of the library staff tackle these jobs together, and it’s incredibly rewarding!

In my spare time when I’m not at work, I like to cook, watch documentaries, enjoy live music, and hang out with my husband and our dogs.

Something that might surprise you about me is that I am a huge fan of hip-hop, particularly from the 1990s.

Get to Know the Clermont College Library Staff: Kathleen Epperson

I have worked in libraries for over 30 years. I began working part-time at our local library. After a few years, I became a full time library staff member.  My children literally grew up in the library!  As the children grew older, I went back to school to get my Master’s in Library Science, which would make me an “official” librarian. While I was in library school, I became interested in academic libraries, and worked as an intern at UC’s DAAP Library. The library director was a wonderful mentor to me, and we’re still good friends. I enjoyed guiding students and assisting faculty to find resources. I worked in two other colleges before I came to Clermont College in 2007.

As Reference Librarian, I love to help students find what they need for their projects. I especially like to surprise them by showing them the many resources the library has to offer.  I try to be as friendly and helpful as I can, so they remember they can come to the library as a space and if they require assistance, there is a friendly person to help them.

When I’m not at work, I love spending time with my grandchildren, especially when we draw, paint and read! Okay, I might have to include playing Dance Revolution, too!

Something that might surprise you about me is that my brother and I were once protected by Pinkerton guards.

Excellent Art Resources

Clermont College students don’t have to be writing a research paper for an art class to use and enjoy Artstor and Oxford Art Online. Find these databases and more in our “Art at Clermont” Research Guides.

Van Gogh, National Gallery, London

Artstor is an “image” database with more than 300,000 images from college, university, and private collections. With art-related teaching, learning, and researching texts, you can view and analyze images through features such as zooming and panning. You can also view webinars on the site!

Oxford Art Online also offers image searching, with a thorough cross-search function of reference material which allows you to easily expand and limit results by time period, artist, material type, and more. Grove Art Online is especially useful for Clermont’s Art History classes!

Get to Know the Clermont College Library Staff: Natalie Winland

I have always been interested in libraries. Beginning in 1988, my freshman year, I was a library aid in high school for 4 years. In February 1992, I started with the Clermont County Public Library at the Williamsburg Branch as a page. I was promoted to the full time position of library assistant from 1993-1996 while at the Goshen Branch. During this time, I attended night classes at Clermont College. From 1996-1998, I went to Crown College in Tennessee to finish my Bachelor’s degree where I worked as a library student assistant . I returned to Ohio, in December 1999, and worked at the Milford Branch Library as a library assistant. I was promoted to Youth Services Specialist and transferred to the Owensville Branch in 2001. I left that position to come to Clermont College Library as the Public Services Manager, May 2011. I have over 23 years of professional library service.

One important aspect of my job is giving great customer service. I want to be approachable, and I feel it is my job to listen. I always give the kind of service that I want to receive which includes a friendly greeting and smile.

When I’m not at work I love to read and shop. I am happiest when I find a bargain.

You might be surprised that I love anime and graphic novels. At least once a year my daughter and I attend an anime convention. The last one we attended was Ramencon 2015 in Merrillville, IN.

All That Jazz

In celebration of Black History Month, the Clermont College Library is featuring two displays, Jazz & Blues Music and Notable People-Frederick Douglass. Our displays feature the rich history and heritage of a special genre of music and highlight an influential voice in reform.

There is a new addition to the Clermont College Library technology offerings located on the first floor. Stop by the library during open hours and try out the new multifunctional machine.

Device features:

  • An easy-to use, intuitive touch screeprinter 1n.
  • Color printing for $.35 per page.
  • Scanning to email for free, then documents can be printed using your print quota.

Ask any library staff member for additional help or for a quick tutorial on using the different features of this great new machine.
