UCBA Fun Facts: Are you a quitter?
Question: What would cause you to stop reading a book half-way through?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: Sleep and kids….I love both dearly.
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: f I can’t connect with the characters or plot or if it’s taking too long to get moving. I normally give a book 3 chapters to catch my attention.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Dragging plots. Or if I’m not in the right frame of mind for a certain genre. Sometimes I’m just suddenly not in the mood for a sobfest.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: If the book isn’t catching/keeping my interest. I used to give a book the first 100 pages, now, it’s more like the first 25-50.
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: Setting my book down and starting another project. I do it ALL the time.
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Can’t relate to the characters.
UCBA Fun Facts: Favorite villain?
Question: Who’s your favorite fictional villain?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: So many, but I’ll go with the White Witch in The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the witch, and the Wardrobe….Tilda Swinton really brought her to life in the movie!
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: Hilly Holbrook in The Help by Kathryn Stockett or Dolores Umbridge in Harry Potter by J.K. Rowling
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Can I say “The Man?” Like, when a group of scrappy friends go up against The Man/Authority? Okay, probably not. In that case, I currently really love President Snow from The Hunger Games. I won’t say too much – spoilers! – but he is creepy in the best way.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: Hmm…hard to just pick one, but I’ll go with Dexter Morgan in the Dexter series by Jeff Lindsay. I guess he’s considered a villian, but he has a good side too.
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: Miranda Priestly in A Devil Wears Prada. You can consider her a villain but it depends on the day.
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Miss Breakbone from the children’s book “The Dunderheads” by Paul Fleischmen
UCBA Fun Facts: Best Reading Related Memory
Question: What’s your best reading related memory?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: I read a book about Helen Keller’s life over and over when I was a kid — I was amazed by her grit and determination. I also loved learning the alphabet in sign language in the back of the book.
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: My high-school best friend had the entire Sweet Valley High book collection and would let me borrow each book until I read the entire series.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Oh, man. I loved the Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows release night. I was in a wedding the night the book came out. We all went and got a copy in our bridesmaids dresses (including one for the bride). I stayed up all night reading and finished just in time to make the morning brunch.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: Visiting the used bookstore in Raleigh, NC right on Hillsborough Street, close to NC State University. I walked there every summer when I would visit my grandparents. I usually made multiple trips during my visit and would stock up on the Nancy Drew mysteries.
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: My Aunt use to read to me when I was little during the time she lived with my family. My favorite book was the Bernstein Bears.
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Reading bedtime stories to my 3 kids when they were little. I miss it so much!
UCBA Fun Facts: Audiobooks?
Question: Do you listen to audiobooks?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: Nope but keep meaning to get some. I’m usually listening to music, NPR, or my 4 year old in the car.
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: Yes! I love audiobooks. I started listening to them when I had an one-way, hour-long commute years ago and have been hooked ever since. Jim Dale (Harry Potter) is one of my favorite readers.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Sometimes. I’m pretty bad about paying attention to them, so that can be problematic.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: Only on road trips.
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: No.
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Yes, but have not in awhile. Use to listen to them more when my kids were younger. Helped travel time go faster.
UCBA Fun Facts: Favorite book turned movie?
Question: What is your favorite movie based on a book?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: For fun? Clueless — as if. Action? Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. On the more dramatic side, Empire of the Sun…I saw it when I was a teenager, and I’ve been a Christian Bale fan ever since.
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: I hate to be repetitive and all too recent, but Catching Fire keeps coming to mind. There quite a few more, though…
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: To name a few…Shutter Island and Girl with the Dragon Tattoo
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: The Hobbit
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: The Notebook, love that movie, and love that book!
UCBA Fun Facts: Reading Distractions?
Question: What easily distracts you when you’re reading?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: Sleepiness….yawn.
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: People who interrupt me with questions or ignore the fact that I’m reading.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Cats. They don’t seem to like when the world does not revolve around them.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: It doesn’t take much these days…tv, laundry, pie, etc.
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: No favorite, but The Joy of Cooking is an essential and classic cookbook. I normally give it as wedding gifts.
Tammy Manger, Public Services Manager: Anything can distract me…very frustrating!
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: My kids, my hubby, my dog, and a busy life!
UCBA Fun Facts: Favorite Fictional Character?
Question: Who is your favorite fictional character?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: I think Elizabeth Bennet in Pride and Prejudice. “There is a stubbornness about me that never can bear to be frightened at the will of others. My courage always rises at every attempt to intimidate me.”
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: Doug Swieteck in Okay for Now by Gary D. Schmidt
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: Anne Shirley (when she’s not being annoying). More up-to-date? Hermione Granger.
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: Hard to narrow down to one, but a couple of faves are both Scout and Atticus Finch in To Kill a Mockingbird, Bone in Bastard Out of Carolina, and Katniss in The Hunger Games
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: No favorite, but The Joy of Cooking is an essential and classic cookbook. I normally give it as wedding gifts.
Tammy Manger, Public Services Manager: I don’t think I have a favorite.
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Holly Golightly in Breakfast at Tiffanys
UCBA Fun Facts: Favorite Cookbook?
Question: What’s your favorite cookbook?
Heather Maloney, Library Director: Any of Ina Garten’s books…haven’t come across a bad recipe yet!
Michelle McKinney, Reference/Web Services Librarian: The Cake Mix Magic series…all the recipes start with a box of cake mix.
Kellie Tilton, Instructional Technologies Librarian: America’s Test Kitchen! (And anything that shows step-by-step with photos. I am an awful cook.)
Lauren Wahman, Instruction Librarian: Can’t remember the last time I read a biography…
Rachel Lewis, Technical Services Manager: No favorite, but The Joy of Cooking is an essential and classic cookbook. I normally give it as wedding gifts.
Tammy Manger, Public Services Manager: Gooseberry Patch Cookbook “Super-Fast Slow Cooking”. I love this book…simple and fast!
Chris Marshall, Public Services Assistant: Campbell’s Soup cookbook. “Best Loved recipes”
