Dinosaur Sculpture Looms Large in Langsam Library
Langsam Library is the new home for Triceracopter – an impressive half triceratops, half helicopter 30-foot sculpture.
Created in 1977 by artist Patricia A. Renick to commemorate the U.S. Bicentennial, Triceracopter: The Hope for the Obsolescence of War combines the form of a triceratops dinosaur with an Army OH6A Cayuse combat helicopter flown in Vietnam. Although a triceratops and a helicopter are unlikely candidates for a single sculpture, the artist has combined them to invite wonder and nudge reflective thinking.
Fall: Literary Prize Season
What do Sir Winston Churchill, Ernest Hemingway and Toni Morrison have in common? They were all winners of the Nobel Prize in Literature! This prize awarded by the Swedish Academy since 1901 is featured in the University of Cincinnati Libraries’ exhibit in the lobby of Langsam Library. The name of the 2010 winner, Mario Vargas Llosa, was just announced, and he is highlighted in the exhibit along with other laureates, including the first one, the oldest and youngest laureate, and other representatives of this glorious cohort. A selected bibliography of works by and about the Nobel Prize in Literature laureates held by the University of Cincinnati Libraries is available next to the display case. Continue reading
Snapshots in Time
A new exhibit, on display on the 5th floor of Langsam Library, features monthly calendars produced by the Strobridge Lithography Company.
Ranging from 1897 to 1917, the calendar cards are exquisite examples of Art Nouveau design in America, showing the artistry and printing skills of the company. The cards functioned as “home advertising” for the firm and were meant to be displayed on a kitchen or office wall. The color separations are remarkable, and the vivid beauty of the illustrations perfectly captures the collaboration between artist and craftsman.
