Elliston Poetry Reading, January 31, 2014, C.K. Williams

The next reading in the Elliston Poetry Room will be by the 2013-2014 Elliston Poet-in-Residence, C.K. Williams.

C. K. Williams is the author of eleven books of poetry, including Writers Writing Dying (Farrar, Straus, and Giroux, 2012); Wait (2010); and Collected Poems (FSG, 2007). The Singing won the National Book Award in 2003; and his previous book, Repair, was awarded the 2000 Pulitzer Prize and the Los Angeles Times Book Award. His collection Flesh and Blood received the National Book Critics Circle Award. Williams has also published a memoir, Misgivings: My Mother, My Father, Myself, in 2000, and has published translations of Sophocles’ Women of Trachis, Euripides’ Bacchae, and poems of Francis Ponge, among others. A prose book entitled Williams, On Whitman, was released in 2010 from Princeton University Press. He is also the author of two books of essays: Poetry and Consciousness (1998) and In Time (University of Chicago Press, 2012). Williams was awarded the Twentieth Annual Ruth Lilly Poetry Prize, an honor given to an American poet in recognition of extraordinary accomplishment. Among his honors are awards in literature from the American Academy of Arts and Letters, the PEN/Voelcker Career Achievement Award, and fellowships from the Lila Wallace Foundation, the Guggenheim Foundation, and the National Endowment of the Arts. He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Letters in 2003, and teaches in the Writing Program at Princeton University.

The author will also teach a master class entitled “First Drafts and Last Drafts” on January 28, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Elliston Poetry Room, 646 Langsam Library.

Elliston Master Class, January 28, 2014, C.K.Williams

The 2013-2014 Elliston Poet-in-Residence, C.K. Williams, will teach a master class on January 28, 2014 at 2:00 PM in the Elliston Poetry Room, 646 Langsam Library.

The class is called “First Drafts and Last Drafts.” In it, Williams plans to read the first drafts of some of his poems, then the final versions, which are often radically different. He’ll speak about the poems and take questions. This event is free and open to the public.

Elliston Project Featured in UC News

The Elliston Project, a digital archive of more than 700 poetry and fiction readings and lectures was recently featured in a UC news article by Courtney Danser. In her article, Danser details the history of the archive and interviews Professor Don Bogen, who has been instrumental in the founding of the Elliston Project.

The Cincinnati Review Emerging Poets Festival, Panel and Reading, November 8, 2013

The next reading in the Elliston Poetry Room will be by poets Shara Lessley, Collier Nogues, Nathaniel Perry, and Marcus Wicker for The Cincinnati Review Emerging Poets Festival.

A panel will take place on November 8, 2013, 2:00 PM, in the Elliston Poetry Room, 646 Langsam Library, immediately followed by a reading at 3:00 PM in the same location. Both the panel and the reading are free and open to the public.

The Elliston Project Digital Archive Scholarship Workshop, November 9, 2013

In May of 2013, we received a UC Faculty Development Council Grant to run a series of five workshops in order to help us determine the best ways to use The Elliston Digital Audio Archive for instruction and research. The third of these lectures will take place on November 9, 2013 and will be led by Tanya Clement. This workshop will explore research opportunities for scholars of poetry and digital archives.

The Elliston Project Digital Archive Pedagogy Workshop, October 5, 2013

In May of 2013, we received a UC Faculty Development Council Grant to run a series of five workshops in order to help us determine the best ways to use The Elliston Digital Audio Archive for instruction and research. The second of these lectures will take place on October 5, 2013 and will be led by Kenneth Sherwood. This workshop will develop our understanding of how this digital audio archive can function in the literature classroom and the poetry workshop.

Elliston Poetry Reading, September 27, 2013, Joseph Campana

The next reading in the Elliston Poetry Room will be by poet Joseph Campana.

Joseph Campana is the author of two collections of poetry, The Book of Faces (Graywolf, 2005) and Natural Selections (2012), which received the Iowa Poetry Prize. His poems appear in Slate, Kenyon Review, Poetry, Conjunctions, Colorado Review, and many other venues.

The author will also give a lecture entitled “The Child’s Two Bodies: Shakespeare and the Ends of Succession in Macbeth” on September 26th at 4:00 PM in McMicken Hall Room 43.

The Elliston Project Digital Archive Theory Workshop, September 21, 2013

In May of 2013, we received a UC Faculty Development Council Grant to run a series of five workshops in order to help us determine the best ways to use The Elliston Digital Audio Archive for instruction and research. The first of these lectures will take place on September 21, 2013 and will be led by Jerome McGann. This workshop will map the conceptual significance and possibilities of The Elliston Project and of digital audio archives more generally.
