The History of Textiles Displayed at Clermont

In collaboration with Dr. Sharon Burns, Clermont College Library is pleased to present the History of Textiles; May through June in the Peters-Jones and Snyder display cases. Quilts, lace tablecloths, clothing, and other fine household fabrics are now on loan from the personal collection of Dr. Burns. Included in the displays are examples of 19th century handmade lace, international textiles, and a vintage wedding gown.

The textile books are available for check out. Give your request to the library staff and we will pull the item for you.

To find a test preparation book, select the “Books+” tab and type in the name of the exam in a keyword or title search.

LWW Health Library provides basic and anatomical sciencestextbooks along with videos, animations, quiz banks, self-assessment practice tests and more.

Nursing Reference Center Plus includes Quick Lessons and Evidence-based Care Sheets; drug information; practice guidelines; customizable patient education handouts, care plans, and more.

Testing & Education Reference Center is a one stop test preparation database which contains sample tests for the NCLEX-PN and NCLEX-RN.

Celebrating Poetry

Clermont College Library celebrated National Poetry Month with the fifth annual Haiku Contest. Sixty-five students submitted 155 haiku. The poets came from a variety of majors including IT, history, and of course English.

Each morning during the entry period, I opened the portal and collected the poems. Haiku is a poetic form that is dependent on the experiences of the person writing. As I read each one, I admired the uniqueness of each poem.

After I read the haiku, I collected them in a document (sans the authors’ names) and sent them to our wonderful judges, Professors Cassie Fetters and Mike Hampton, who determined the winners.

 

Grand prize went to Meranda Balkema for:

Poetry at Clermont: A Guide to Writing Poetry

Guest Poet, Adam Day

Clermont College Library will be hosting a poetry reading in collaboration with the English, Languages, and Fine Arts departments. Adam Day, guest poet, will be in the library on April 6 at 1:25 to read from his writings, including his latest book, ModeDay.MODELCITY.web_-692x1024l of a City in Civil War. We’ll also host a reception, book signing, and Q & A session immediately following.

Adam is the recipient of a Poetry Society of America Chapbook Fellowship for Badger, Apocrypha, a PEN Emerging Writers Award, and an Al Smith Fellowship from the Kentucky Arts Council.

We hope you will join us for this wonderful event.

Clermont College Haiku Contest

In honor of National Poetry Month, the Clermont College Library is sponsoring its 5th Annual Haiku Contest.

Clermont College students will have the opportunity to write up to 3 haiku and submit them for a chance to win a $50 gift card.  Professors Cassie Fetters and Michael Hampton will serve as our esteemed judges.

We have complete contest guidelines and submission page online. You may begin submitting entries on March 16.

The entry deadline is April 8th.

Medical Resources at UC Clermont College

Where do you find medical information when you need it? There are some great websites such as MedlinePlus.org, PubMed.gov, WebMD.org and the MayoClinic.org, but as a student, faculty, or staff member at UC Clermont, you have much more available to you!

Medline with Full Text (EBSCO)Ebsco is different from the website MedlinePlus. If you’re familiar with the searching capability of the EBSCO databases, you will be able to search Medline with Full Text. It covers the full text of 1,370 medical journals from 1965 to the present (with no embargo—meaning they don’t hold back the most recent issues for paid subscribers).

Also within the EBSCO group are other important medical databases: CINAHL Plus with Full Text, Health Source: Nursing/Academic Edition, and Health Source: Consumer Edition.

A Person’s a Person No Matter How Small-Dr. Seuss

Dr.Seuss and I go way back. When I was a child my mom subscribed to the I Can Read It All By Myself book club. I loved receiving a new book and reading Dr. Seuss’s crazy tales. I shared those same books with my children and as a children’s librarian to hundreds of kids. The man helped thousands of children learn to read with Hop on Pop and The Seuss bookCat in the Hat. He even directed our attention to the environment through books like the Lorax. And then there’s the beloved How the Grinch Stole Christmas.

So Happy Birthday, Dr. Seuss and thanks for bringing fun to reading!

Get to Know the Clermont College Library Staff: Penny McGinnis

Penny McGinnis, Clermont College Library’s Technical Services Manager

IMG_0087-flat-120I’ve worked in libraries for over twenty years. I started out at the Lynchburg branch of the Highland County District Libraries as a children’s librarian. Then I moved to Lynchburg-Clay public school and worked in K-8 and K-5 libraries. In 2006 I started working in technical services at Clermont College Library.

A favorite part of my multi-layered job is sharing library information through social media. The library uses Facebook, Twitter, and our LiBlog in the social media world. I enjoy connecting with our faculty, staff, and students.

When I’m not at work, I write for my own blog where I review books, share devotional thoughts, poetry, photos, and art. My husband and I enjoy sports, hiking, and spending time with our children and grandchildren.

You might be surprised to know that I coached high school volleyball for two years, while my youngest daughter played. That surprised me too!

A few of my favorite things:
