Panel Discussion in the Library — Women in Science: Conversations to Spark Success

In celebration of this year’s UC Common Read, the Clermont College Library and the Academic Support Committee proudly present a panel discussion entitled Women in Science: Conversations to Spark Success. The panel discussion will take place in the library on Thursday, October 18 from 12:30-1:30.

Moderated by Dr. Margaret Hanson, Associate Dean for Natural Sciences at UC’s College of Arts and Sciences,  the panel will engage science and math faculty in conversation about their professional pathways. Panelists include Dr. Krista Clark, Professor of Biology, Carolyn Goodman, Assistant Professor of Mathematics, and Dr. Jill Shirokawa, Adjunct Assistant Professor of Chemistry.

Student Art in the Library

For the 2018-19 semesters, the Clermont College Library is pleased to exhibit the art of Caitlyn Richey and Trent McFarland.

Caitlyn shared her thoughts about her artistic process, “ ‘The power of imagination makes us infinite.’ At the beginning, developing the basic materials and ideas for the work is deeply reflective and informative. Later, by bringing materials together I begin to form a-distilling and shaping movement, creating a context, working toward something that feels cohesive and complete and creating a story that tells itself, that is what is powerful to me—and it is the spark that inspires my infinite imagination.”

Trent McFarland’s professor, Kelly Frigard, spoke about him, “Trent is a student artist interested in sea and marine life.  In Drawing II, he worked on this series of oil pastels exploring texture, color, and form.” We hope you enjoy his drawings in this series.

Student Lounge Library Access

Next time you’re in the student lounge, remember – your Clermont College Library is only an elevator ride away!

The blue elevator in the student lounge is now enabled to provide 1st and 2nd floor library access.

This will make coming into our space with your Subway (and your entourage) that much more convenient.

Thanks to the Clermont IT and facilities staff for helping to make this new library access point a reality.

Clermont College Library Has a New Neighbor

Do you have your first paper due soon? Are you nervous about succeeding in that math class? Check out the new Academic Success Center, around the corner from the library.

When you are struggling with an assignment or to understand a difficult concept, it is important to reach out for assistance. Sometimes it helps to hear information in a new way or from a person other than your professor. Even if you are not struggling, but want to do the very best in your courses, go to the ASC for that extra boost. Associate Professor Jo Ann Thompson, with the Academic Success Center, shared “The new ASC is committed to helping Clermont students identify and use their strengths to succeed in all of their classes.” The ASC is available to help students with tutoring in a variety of subjects one-on-one or in groups, at no additional cost.

Whether you have a quick question about an assignment or would like more in-depth help, stop by the ASC in Peters-Jones 104 or email them at Clermont.tutoring@uc.edu to set up an appointment today!

New Popular Reading & Movie Collection Brought to You by the Clermont County Public Library

Do you read fiction? Young adult novels? Anime? Self-help? Do you enjoy popular movies? In partnership with the Clermont County Public Library, the Clermont College Library now offers a variety of popular reading material and DVDs.

Natalie Winland, Clermont College Library’s Public Services Manager, who had an integral part in coordinating our new offerings said, “We are excited to offer this new service to our students, faculty and staff.”

Use your Bearcat Card to check out best sellers, nonfiction, graphic novels, Anime, and feature films from the new collection, located on the first floor. Books check out for three weeks, DVDs for one week. We will be adding new items each semester.

Welcome to Clermont College Library, Heather Mitchell-Botts!

Clermont College Library welcomes its newest faculty member – Instruction Librarian, Heather Mitchell-Botts!

Heather Mitchell-Botts, Instruction Librarian

Heather comes to UC Clermont from ECPI University’s campus in Raleigh, North Carolina where she served as Campus Librarian for the past 5 years.  Heather’s experience in teaching and public services is extensive – at ECPI she did everything from teach information literacy classes to create online guides/tutorials to collection development.

Heather’s role at the Clermont College Library will focus primarily on instruction. She’ll serve as instruction coordinator for our library, developing formal information literacy instruction programming and planning to support students both in person and online. Heather will also focus on the development of online tools in support of information literacy and serve as librarian liaison to the ELF and BLT departments.

I’m personally very excited to welcome Heather to our team. She is passionate about teaching and brings a great deal of professionalism and positivity to everything she touches. Please join me in welcoming Heather to UC Clermont College.

Find Summer Fun at the Library

Are you looking for something fun to do this summer? Take a look at Clermont College Library’s display case, on the second floor of the Snyder building. You’ll find books on everything from origami to making art on an iPad. There is even a book on exploring Cincinnati.

The library’s two display cases, (one near the library in Peters-Jones and one on the second floor of Snyder) showcase items you can check out, all year round.

Student Art in the Library

Summer semester the Clermont College Library is pleased to exhibit the art of Molly Newton, Lily Barnes, and Amanda Wittmer. Molly and Lily have created works in pencil and pen, while Amanda used oil pastel, acrylic, and collage.

A recent trip to Thailand influenced Amanda’s work. Her piece, Missing Home, received the Editor’s Choice Award in the East Fork Journal. In the fall, she will pursue a graduate degree in Art Therapy at Adler University in Chicago.

Winners of the Clermont College Library’s 7th Annual Haiku Contest

Clermont College Library received 65 exceptional haiku entries from 26 students this year.

To quote Professor Reeves, one of our two judges, “What a great bunch—it was a very hard decision.”

Grand prize winner, David Fiora, won a $50 gift card and all winners will be published in the East Fork, Clermont’s online literary journal.
