Streaming Video Pilot Program

Did you know UC Libraries is offering thousands of streaming video titles with unlimited concurrent users for classroom or independent use?  Through March 30th, UC Libraries has made available the 26,000 titles held in the Kanopy streaming video collection.  When students or faculty have accessed a title four times, a one year lease is automatically created.  Kanopy works directly with filmmakers and film distribution companies to offer award-winning collections including titles from PBS, BBC, Criterion Collection, Media Education Foundation and more.  Check it out at http://uc.kanopystreaming.com/ or by searching by title on the library website.  Contact a subject librarian with any questions http://www.libraries.uc.edu/help/subject-librarians.html

Online Resources: HSL eBook Collections

Do you know how many Health Sciences ebook collections are available through the Health Sciences Library (HSL)?  There are 15!  Some are available just to the Academic Health Center and others are available to the entire university.

eBook Collections – Features:

Most of these collections provide the opportunity to search across the entire collection or browse for a specific subject or title. Collections vary in what they include in addition to ebooks. Some include multimedia, cases, self-assessment, drug monographs, calculators and patient education while others also include journals and guidelines. Most include the option to create a personal account that provides the ability to print or email and often more. One collection, ClinicalKey requires a personal account in order to access the PDF full text of an ebook.

Over the next few weeks these ebook collections will be introduced more fully. In the meantime, feel free to explore the collections below.

Off Campus Access:

Most are accessible from off campus via the proxy server or the VPN (Virtual Private Network). The exception is ClinicalKey which is only accessible from off campus via the VPN.

To install the VPN Junos Pulse client on your home computer or device go to http://www.libraries.uc.edu/hsl/services/off-campus-access.html

Best bet: use the Junos Pulse manual installation instructions NOT the automatic installation instructions.

Libraries Closed during UC’s Winter Season Days

UC Libraries will be closed during UC’s Winter Season Days beginning December 24 through January 3. The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library will reopen with access to individuals with proper UC ID badges December 28-31 from 12-4pm with limited services. All libraries will reopen and return to full service on Monday, January 4. A list of hours is available on the Libraries website.

The UCit@Langsam computer and study lab on the 5th floor of Langsam Library will also be closed.

The Langsam Library book drop will be available for books and videos only. (Please note – equipment must be returned in person when the library is open again on January 4).

UC Employees Featured in UC Magazine

UC Libraries is proud to be a part of the Provost’s Strategic Hiring Opportunity and Dual Career Assistance programs. In a recent article in UC Magazine, library employees Bill McMillin, Tiffany Grant, Don Jason, Hong Cheng and Robert Freeman are included in a feature of new employees that “have joined UC with support from Provost Office funds dedicated to recruit the best and brightest in their fields as well as to attract and support faculty who have partners who can bring their own academic expertise to campus.” You can read all about it online in UC Magazine.

Langsam Library Has Gone to the Dogs

Take a break from your studies and come meet Dozer and Boomer, Labradors in the K-9 Unit of UC’s Public Safety Department.

Dozer and Boomer will be visiting Langsam Library on Monday and Tuesday, December 7th and 8th from 11:00 to 11:30am and 1:00 to 1:30pm both days.

Fuel Your Late-Night Studying in Langsam with Coffee and Snacks.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT! UC Libraries and Food Services have partnered to provide free coffee and snacks beginning at 10pm each night for students studying for exams in Langsam Library.

Langsam Library space will be opened 24/7 for exams beginning noon on Sunday, November 29 through 6pm Friday, December 11. Regular hours will resume Saturday, December 12.
