Student Technology Resources Center (STRC)

The STRC is a student-centered service area located on the 4th floor of Langsam Library. This area features specialized software and equipment that enable students to work on digital assignments.

Students can create webpages, edit video and audio files, convert file formats, create CDs or DVDs, scan images, create presentations in PowerPoint or Flash, and receive assistance in preparing Electronic Theses and Dissertations. Adobe products such as PhotoShop, Dreamweaver, Acrobat, InDesign, Premiere, and more are available.

Maloney Named RWC Library Director

Heather Maloney, Associate Senior Librarian, has been appointed the new RWC Library Director after serving as Interim Director since July 2009. Heather has been with the RWC Library since 2002 serving as Assistant Library Director (2008-2009) and Interim Director (2009-2010). Her primary responsibilities include personnel, budget, programs and services, collections and facilities. She also provides reference services, instruction and collection development for the Allied Health, Nursing, Dental Hygiene and Radiation Therapy departments.

Libraries Awarded a LSTA Minigrant to Digitize The Cincinnatian Yearbook, 1951-2006, to Join First Set of Yearbooks Already Digitized

1940 CincinnatianThe University of Cincinnati Libraries have been awarded a $15,900 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Minigrant from the State Library of Ohio to digitize copies of The Cincinnatian, UC’s yearbook, for the period of 1951-2006.

A previous LSTA grant provided for the digitization of The Cincinnatian from 1894-1950, viewable on the Web at http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cincinnatian/.  This second project will complete access to all issues of the yearbook via the Web.

Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine Meets for First Time in 30 years

Before the May 26, 2010 meeting of the “new” Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine, the Society had last met in 1980, shortly after Dr. Striker’s death.  Recently, as the latest phase of the Winkler Center’s own history began to blossom, the idea of resurrecting the Society made eminent sense.  Cincinnati’s medical history is the envy of most cities, large and small, but with the passing of a generation of physicians and historians who knew and understood their community’s prominent role in medical history, appreciation of this illustrious history began to pass with them.

Libraries Awarded NEH Grant to Digitize the Correspondence and Photographs of Albert B. Sabin

Albert SabinThe University of Cincinnati Libraries have received a $314,258 grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to digitize the correspondence and photographs of Albert B. Sabin, developer of the oral polio vaccine and distinguished service professor at the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine and Children’s Hospital Research Foundation from 1939-1969.

The primary source documents to be digitized include 35,000 letters totaling 50,000 pages of correspondence between Sabin and political, cultural, social, and scientific leaders around the world. Also included will be 1,000 photographs documenting the events and activities worldwide that were part of Sabin’s crusade to eradicate polio.

UC Libraries Pay Tribute to UC Authors, Editors & Composers

Authors, Editors & Composers DisplayIt is a celebration of the talent of UC faculty beyond the lecture halls and research labs. Publications of faculty spanning articles, books, edited journals, musical scores, artwork, poetry, DVDs, videos and the Web were on display at the annual Authors, Editors and Composers Reception and Program.

The event, open to invited members of the UC community, was held 3:30-5 p.m., Thursday, April 22, in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center.
