The University of Cincinnati Libraries have been awarded a $15,900 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Minigrant from the State Library of Ohio to digitize copies of The Cincinnatian, UC’s yearbook, for the period of 1951-2006.
A previous LSTA grant provided for the digitization of The Cincinnatian from 1894-1950, viewable on the Web at http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cincinnatian/. This second project will complete access to all issues of the yearbook via the Web.
Medical College, University of Cincinnati
Before the May 26, 2010 meeting of the “new” Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine, the Society had last met in 1980, shortly after Dr. Striker’s death. Recently, as the latest phase of the Winkler Center’s own history began to blossom, the idea of resurrecting the Society made eminent sense. Cincinnati’s medical history is the envy of most cities, large and small, but with the passing of a generation of physicians and historians who knew and understood their community’s prominent role in medical history, appreciation of this illustrious history began to pass with them.
A new exhibit, on display on the 5th floor of Langsam Library, features monthly calendars produced by the Strobridge Lithography Company.
Ranging from 1897 to 1917, the calendar cards are exquisite examples of Art Nouveau design in America, showing the artistry and printing skills of the company. The cards functioned as “home advertising” for the firm and were meant to be displayed on a kitchen or office wall. The color separations are remarkable, and the vivid beauty of the illustrations perfectly captures the collaboration between artist and craftsman.
On exhibit on the 4th floor of Langsam Library, Starring the Queen City, celebrates books and films set in Cincinnati. In such books as Suzi Sinzinnati, Jazz Bird, and Beloved, and films such as Rain Man, Eight Men Out, and The Mighty, Cincinnati is either featured or plays a prominent role in the story.
UC Libraries are welcoming new students to the university with a library orientation session in Langsam Library from 9:30-10:30am, June 29 through August 12.
During this time, new students tour the library, learn about the Libraries website, how to print in the libraries, watch a short video in the STRC, and visit UCit@Langsam.
UC Libraries will be closed Sunday, July 4th and Monday, July 5th for Independence Day, except for the Health Sciences Library, which will be open on July 4th from noon-6pm, but closed July 5th.
Illiad, the UC Libraries Interlibrary loan system, will be offline all day, on Thursday, June 17, for a system upgrade. (Note, this is a change from the previously announced date of June 16). Additionally, on Tuesday, June 16, hardware updates must be made to server systems. This may result in intermittent outages of certain applications for a brief period Tuesday morning.

Listen to others. Communicate your feelings. Think before you act. The Center for Peace Education taught these and other skills for conflict resolution, peer mediation, and effective communication. The work of this organization with Greater Cincinnati schools and through their own programs helped children to learn to resolve their differences without fighting. A collection of the records of the Center for Peace Education was recently acquired by the Archives and Rare Books Library and contains training materials, photographs of events, brochures, office files, and other documentation of the work of the Center for Peace Education. Effective June 11, the College of Applied Science (CAS) Library will be closed to the public so that the CAS Library collections and services can be merged with the existing Engineering Library (to be called the CEAS Library), located in Baldwin Hall.
