Dean’s Corner: Fall 2016 Dean’s Advisory Council

This month I held my third biannual Dean’s Advisory Council meeting. The focus of this fall’s meeting was Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship (DH/DS). The two-day meeting included: a tour of Northern Kentucky University’s Steele Library and College of Informatics; a presentation with the co-leaders of UC Libraries’ new Digital Scholarship Center; a tour of UC Libraries’ Preservation Lab; and a luncheon with guests from across the university, including Interim Provost Peter Landgren, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Eileen Strempel, and representatives from Student Government and the Graduate Student Governance.

 

 

 

Join the LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook First Phase Users Program

The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, with funding from the University of Cincinnati’s Office of the Provost, is pleased to present the LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook First Phase Users Program.

LabArchives is the leading secure and intuitive cloud-based Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) application enabling researchers to easily create, store, share and manage their research data. Far more than an “ELN”, LabArchives provides a flexible, extensible platform that can be easily customized to match your lab’s workflow providing benefits to Principal Investigators, lab managers  staff, post doctoral fellows and grad students. LabArchives can be integrated seamlessly with GraphPad Prism, MS-Office, PubMed, BOX, Learning Management Systems, and a number of other software tools that are used extensively by researchers of the Academic Health Center and University wide. Additionally, the LA ELN works on multiple platforms and devices including Mac, Windows, Android and iPad devices, allowing researchers to store and access their data from virtually anywhere with internet access.

An enterprise-wide license with LabArchives has been obtained for the Academic Health Center (AHC), which includes the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences and Pharmacy. This provides an unlimited amount of licenses to members of the UC AHC. An additional 100 licenses have been reserved for non-Academic Health Center UC affiliates, and each of these additional licenses will be distributed on a first-come, first-served method. The First Phase will continue until December 1, 2017.

Writing Assistance at the HSL during the Winter Months

Writing assistance in the HSL Informatics Lab has been extended into the winter season.  Visit the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library and sign up for a same-day appointment with a writing tutor. Receive free writing assistance on all documents, including: personal statements, grant applications, reports and articles.

The writing tutor is available on these dates and times:

November 30th 12: 45 – 5:45 PM

December 7th 12:45 – 5:45 PM

January 18th 1:00 – 5:00 PM

World Library Tours by UCBA Faculty and Staff

Whether it’s traveling to a library conference or other professional development opportunity or just exploring the world in our free time, we always love to scope out what’s going on in library land.

It was an easy walk to the Mackinac Island Public Library which has an incredible view of Lake Huron.  It’s visiting the Library of Congress — the biggest library of them all!  It’s time spent at the World War I Museum Library in Kansas City. Perhaps it’s exploring downtown Seattle and grabbing a picture of some cool architecture at the Seattle Public Library.  Maybe it’s exploring history at the Boston Public Library or getting a strategy in place for the life-size chessboard at the Kansas City Public Library. And how about trekking halfway around the world to the beautiful Austrian National Library in Vienna!

We’ve seen some awesome libraries across the country and around the world, but there’s still so much to see!  Where will Lauren, Michelle and Christian go next on their world library tour?

Donald and Marian Spencer: Lives of Love and Social Justice

Donald and Marian SpencerThe Archives and Rare Books Library recently received a new collection of papers from Marian and Donald Spencer.  For over fifty years, the Spencers fought for educational equity and equal rights with organizations such as the NAACP, the U.S. Commission on Human Rights Ohio Board, and the Cincinnati Board of Education. While processing the papers of Marian and Donald Spencer, I learned a vast amount about their groundbreaking electoral campaigns, keynote speeches, court cases, and community boards. However, I also came to know them as people. Donald and Marian Spencer met while they were both students at the University of Cincinnati, married in 1940, and raised two boys. They spent a great deal of their nearly 70 years of marriage in Cincinnati fighting for social justice and equality in the community. Continue reading →

Changhong (Bella) Wu and Bo Sun, librarians from Northeast Normal University (NENU) in Changchun, China, visited the UC Libraries November 15th-17th through a librarian exchange program between Ohio University and NENU. As the first cohort, Bella and Bo will stay in the United States for three months visiting libraries across the country and conducting research. Topics they are interested at UC Libraries are Ohiolink, collection development strategies, digital collections and digital and information literacy education. We look forward to meeting more visitors from NENU in the future.

UCBA Library’s Thanksgiving Holiday Break Hours

UC Libraries Closed Thanksgiving

thanks imageUC Libraries will be closed Thursday, November 24 and Friday, November 25 for Thanksgiving, with the exception of the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open Friday, November 25 noon – 5:00pm. Regular library hours will resume Saturday, November 26. This closing includes the Langsam Library 4th floor space, which will close Wednesday, November 23 at 6pm and re-open Saturday, November 26 at 10am.
