The Archives & Rare Books Library has received additional volumes restored through UC Libraries’ Preservation Services and national book conservators. The most recent volumes that have returned represent the Irish history holdings. ARB has an excellent collection of Irish history, literature, and drama that garners frequent use from students and researchers in a variety of fields, particularly English, history, European studies, and ethnology. Compare Ohio Hospitals
The Ohio Department of Health is now providing a web-based tool, the Ohio Hospital Compare that measures how well hospitals follow scientifically backed recommendations for care in areas such as heart attack, stroke, infection prevention, patient safety, and more. UC student is winner in Knovel University Challenge

Aravind Ranganathan, a PhD student in Computer Science at the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS), recently won an iPod nano by participating in the Knovel University Challenge.
The Challenge was a nationwide contest for engineering students, and required them to locate answers to technical questions using collections in the Knovel online technical resource. Knovel is a subscription product paid for by UC Libraries. Aravind won in the “Contest Within a Contest” category.

UC Libraries is especially proud of this victory as we played a small role in the Mascot’s success. The entry video submitted to Capitol One was produced in the STRC using the video-editing suite.
Make learning a language your resolution for the New Year
According to Wikipedia, learning something new (such as a foreign language or music), is one of the popular New Year’s resolutions in the United States. But what if you don’t have the time to enroll in a class and cannot afford a learning kit from Rosetta Stone? The good news is that the University of Cincinnati Libraries have a wonderful collection of books, media, and other resources for you to learn a new language. Our collections primarily support the language courses offered through the School of World Languages and Cultures and offer resources for learning Arabic, Chinese, Hebrew, Japanese, Russian, and Swahili. We also have vast collections in the areas of German Studies and Romance Languages and Literatures. Foxe's Martyrs Saved From the Stake

In the continuing project to restore key volumes in the Archives & Rare Books Library, UC Libraries’ Preservation Services has completed work on John Foxe’s Actes and Monuments of Matters Most Special and Memorable, Happening in the Church – more popularly known as “Foxe’s Book of Martyrs.” This fundamental work of Christian hagiography, first published in Latin in 1559 at Basel, had its first English printing in 1563. There were many subsequent editions over the next three hundred years. The Archives & Rare Books Library holds both a 1596 edition, and this restored one, the three-volume 1641 printing. Both these editions are widely used by students and faculty in history, art history, English, and religious studies. Continue reading
CCM Library Moves to New Location: Closing Dec 24-Jan 7
The Albino Gorno Memorial Music (CCM) Library and Music Listening Center will be closed December 24 through January 7 so that it may move from its current location on the fourth floor of Blegen Library to its newly renovated location on the sixth floor.

Please note that on Saturday, December 19th from 6:00 am to 12:00 pm electric power to Langsam Library will be out for planned maintenance. This power outage will cause the UC Libraries Web site, the Library Catalog, and Interlibrary Loan services through ILLiad to be inaccessible during this time.
In addition, UCit@Langsam will be closed 5:00 am to 1:00 pm because of the power outage.

Action Housing for Greater Cincinnati Records Fully Processed and Available for Research
A building on the corner of 13th and Race Streets, which was rehabbed.
The late 1960s saw a myriad of social reforms as part of the War on Poverty. Cincinnati was not immune to this movement, and among the many efforts to improve the plight of the poor in the city, was an attempt to increase the availability of safe and adequate housing for low-income individuals.
For this purpose, Action Housing for Greater Cincinnati was formed in September of 1968 by the Cincinnati City Council and local business interests. Although the organization only lasted until the early 1970s, Action Housing was responsible for building or rehabilitating approximately 1,700 living units for low income families in Cincinnati.
