Arts and Crafts at Clermont

One way Clermont College Library supports our Art Department is by providing books on arts and crafts. We house books on drawing and painting as well as many hands-on crafts. The most recent course the art department added, Fundamentals of Metal Clay Jewelry, has resulted in some beautiful work by the students. I’ve had the opportunity to take Fundamental Concepts of Art and a course on felt making. In the fundamentals class, I created a book from handmade paper and learned printing techniques. The class is designed to give students a chance to work with two and three dimensional art.

Student Art Spotlight: Samantha Padgett, Ellen Taylor, and Natalia Martinez

art summer 6
The Clermont College Library is proud to present a trio of student artists and a trio of their works during the summer term — Samantha Padgett’s soulful still lifes in pencil, Ellen Taylor’s bold depictions of fire, water, earth, and spirit and Natalia Martinez’s manga-inspired meditations on love and death.

The exhibit will run through August. Thanks to Professors Kelly Frigard and Anthony Wolking for coordinating another fantastic collection of student art in our library.

What is the DL with Triceracopter?

by Cedric Rose

Patricia Renick with Triceracopter.

Patricia Renick with Triceracopter.

As the culminating experience practicum for my Master of Library and Information Science degree, I am working on a digital collection of documents connected to the evolution of Patricia Renick’s Triceracopter: Hope for the Obsolescence of War.  The finished library will illuminate the connections and processes–physical, social, and conceptual–concealed in the finished work.  Along the way I’ll ruminate on issues and concepts related to digital libraries (DLs).

Triceracopter is a hybrid of parts with far-flung origins in space and time: part three-horned Rhinoceros-like creature that last walked the earth 66 million years ago, part war-damaged helicopter, the final manifestation of a series of forms that imprinted further forms under the hands, intellect, imagination; and will of a DAAP professor and sculptor whose life included shock treatment for a misdiagnosis of schizophrenia (Chapman 2003), decades of teaching art, and emergence as an internationally recognized artist.
