Sept. 20 “Life of the Mind” Lecture to Feature John McNay

Life of the MindLife of the Mind, interdisciplinary conversations with UC faculty, will return Tuesday, September 20, 3:30-5pm in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center, with a lecture by John McNay, professor of history and chair of the department of history, philosophy and political science at UC Blue Ash College. Professor McNay will speak on, “I would rather have peace than be president”: Presidential Decisions for Peace.

Life of the Mind is a semi-annual lecture series that features a distinguished University of Cincinnati faculty member presenting his or her work and expertise. A panel of three responds to and discusses the lecture from diverse perspectives. The series includes intriguing insights from diverse perspectives and encourages faculty and students from across UC to engage in further discourse. The presentation is not simply a recitation of the faculty member’s work but promotes an informed point of view. Continue reading →

ARB’s “50 Minutes” Series Return Next Week

The Archives & Rare Books Library will usher in its 7th year of the “50 Minutes” lunchtime talks this August with “A Skeleton, Some Lions, Pigeons, and Gods! The Seldom-Noticed Art in UC Architecture.”

The talk is scheduled for Thursday, August 25, at 12 noon in 814 Blegen and as always, the “50 Minutes” presentations are very informal and conversational.  Bring your lunch, relax, ignore the clock on the wall which is invariably an hour behind (though we may climb on top of the piano beneath it and change the battery this year), and enjoy a look at the history and culture of the “hidden” campus.  Not advertised in the title, we will also be looking at semi-naked people in the architecture.

Visit UC Libraries Welcome Weekend for Treats and Selfies with Einstein and Neil Armstrong

LangsamoutUC’s Welcome Week kicks off Wednesday, August 17 as new students begin moving in. UC Libraries is part of the weekend festivities to acclimate students to campus.

Stop by Langsam Library Saturday and Sunday, August 20 & 21 from 1-5pm for lemonade, cookies AND a free print of your class schedule.

Neil ArmstrongVisit any of the three Science and Engineering Libraries (College of Engineering and Applied Science, Geology-Mathematics-Physics, and the Chemistry-Biology) from 1-5pm on Sunday, August 21 for treats, beverages and brief tours of the libraries.  At CEAS Library, visitors are welcome to grab a respectable selfie with Neil Armstrong (outside the library entrance) or with Albert Einstein (in the reading room)!

DAAP Library to Host a Wiki Women Edit-A-Thon June 26

wiki women imageJoin us on Sunday, June 26th from 1pm – 7pm in the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP) as we attempt to repair the gender imbalance of Wikipedia.

Inspired by the initiatives of Art + Feminism, we will be adding and editing Wikipedia pages of influential female artists, designers, architects, and interior designers. There will be free pizza (obviously) and free popcorn (duh). All are welcome! Join us for the full time, or stop by for an hour to help.

UC students Karyn Georgilis, Maggie Murphy and Hannah Sellers are all co-founders of the event as well as senior design students in DAAP.

Nominations Sought for Next UC Faculty ‘Life of the Mind’ Presenter

Life of the Mind graphicThe Life of the Mind Steering Committee is seeking nominations for the next featured UC faculty member to present at the Sept. 20 lecture. The chosen UC faculty presenter should be an expert in their respective field with a proven record of scholarship or creation of works, as well as be an engaging speaker able to address an audience with broad interests.

In addition, the successful candidate will be:

  • Accomplished, distinguished UC faculty member with national/international reputation and whose achievements illuminate the work of the university and beyond.
  • Recognized as an expert in their field of study, research or creation of works.
  • Experienced at presenting their work to a diverse audience outside the classroom.
  • Excellent and engaging speaker able to relate to a non-specialist audience.
  • Provocative topic of study/research/creative work. The speaker should ask questions that span broad intellectual interests and spark conversation from multiple perspectives.

Celebrate Preservation Week at an Open House April 29 in the Preservation Lab

In celebration of National Preservation Week, the Preservation Lab will host its annual open house on April 29 from 1:30-3:30pm.

Located on the 300 level of Langsam Library, the Preservation Lab preserves and conserves the collections of UC Libraries and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. At the open house, lab staff will demo some of the techniques and equipment used to repair and protect materials, as well as showcase some of their recent projects. In addition to the usual fun, this year visitors to the Preservation Lab will have an opportunity to make their own sheet of paper with plant fibers beaten with a Hollander beater.

THATCamp-Carousel-jpgJoin UC Libraries for THATCamp University of Cincinnati 2016, an unconference, which is an open meeting where humanists and technologists of all skill levels and interests gather to learn and to build together in sessions proposed on the spot.
THATCamp (The Humanities And Technology Camp) University of Cincinnati 2016 is free and open to all and will be held on the 4th floor of Langsam Library. The event will begin at noon on Monday, May 2, and conclude on Tuesday, May 3 at 4:30pm. Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, as well as scholars, archivists, museum professionals, developers and programmers, K-12 teachers and administrators from within and outside UC who have an involvement or interest in digital humanities are welcome and encouraged to attend. Sessions for THATCamp University of Cincinnati 2016 will be determined during the opening session on May 2; however, a preliminary schedule has been devised and posted online at http://ucincinnati2016.thatcamp.org/schedule/.    Continue reading →

Celebrating the History of Nursing at the 7th Annual Cecil Striker Society Lecture April 14

Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions and the Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine will host the seventh annual Cecil Striker Society Annual Lecture on Thursday, April 14, 4-6:30pm in Kresge Auditorium, Medical Sciences Building, 231 Albert Sabin Way. Julie Fairman, Nightingale Professor of Nursing and Chair of the Biobehavioral Health Sciences Department at the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing, will present this year’s lecture, “Making History: From the University of Cincinnati to the Future of Nursing.”

Sponsored by UC Health, the evening will include the talk from 4 to 5 p.m. followed by Q&A and a reception at 5:30 p.m. The Cecil Striker Lecture is free and open to the public, but RSVP’s are requested to (513) 558-5120 or chhp@uc.edu.

The University of Cincinnati Libraries celebrated the International Edible Books Festival for the 14th year on April 1, 2016. Fifteen UC students, librarians and staff submitted entries that included edible books made of cakes, cookies, candy and Peeps.

New Exhibit, “Poems of UC’s Past,” Combines Original Works with Historic Photographs

A new exhibit on display on the 5th floor lobby of Langsam Library features original poetry describing historic images from the collections of UC’s Archives and Rare Books Library.

Referred to as “Ekphrastic poems,” they use “vivid descriptions of a scene or, more commonly, a work of art. Through the imaginative act of narrating and reflecting on the ‘action’ of a painting or sculpture, the poet may amplify and expand its meaning.” (Poetry Foundation.org)

In this exhibit, six graduate-student poets in the McMicken College of Arts and Science’s English department do not aim to simply “amplify and expand” the meaning of the images, but rather through their words, these pictures come more vibrantly to life. Continue reading →
