Archives Month Celebrates the Peoples of Ohio

Archives Month PosterEvery October, the Society of Ohio Archivists sponsors “Archives Month in Ohio” in order to bring awareness to the rich historical materials contained in the state’s libraries, museums, and historical organizations.  The intent is to make citizens aware of these holdings, and to see further use of them by students, scholars, and teachers.

The theme for Archives Month this year is “Peoples of Ohio,” celebrating the ethnic and racial diversity in the Buckeye State.  In Cincinnati, the focus is on Irish Americans with exhibits and presentations planned that explore the Irish culture both in the Queen City.  Once again, an image from the holdings of the Archives & Rare Books Library has been selected for the statewide poster – a photo of Lance Underwood of the Emerald Society Pipes and Drums Corps, performing at the 2012 St. Patrick’s Day Parade in Cincinnati. UC Libraries Celebrate Information Literacy Awareness Month

October is Information Literacy Awareness Month

On October 1, 2009, President Barack Obama issued a proclamation establishing October as National Information Literacy Awareness Month. Information literacy, or the ability to find, evaluate, and use information effectively, is key in preparing students for being actively involved in a democratic society and seeking highly skilled jobs. Fall LIFE OF THE MIND Lecture Series Kicks Off September 18

The fall “Life of the Mind” lecture series will kick off Tuesday, September 18 from 3:30-5pm in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center. “Life of the Mind” features interdisciplinary conversations with UC faculty around a one-word theme followed by audience Q&A and a reception with light refreshments. Every year, the Society of Ohio Archivists sponsors “Archives Month in Ohio” in order to bring awareness to the rich historical materials contained in the state’s libraries, museums, and historical organizations.  The intent is to make citizens aware of these holdings, and to see further use of them by students, scholars, and teachers.

The theme for Archives Month this year is “Peoples of Ohio,” celebrating the ethnic and racial diversity in the Buckeye State.  In Cincinnati, the focus is on Irish Americans with exhibits and presentations planned that explore the Irish culture in the Queen City.  One event that is scheduled is an afternoon reading of Irish American poetry in the University of Cincinnati’s Elliston Poetry Room, located in Langsam Library on the north end of campus.

Farewell and Best Wishes to Janice Schulz

A couple of weeks ago, we notified the University of Cincinnati Libraries staff that our friend and colleague, Janice Schulz, will be leaving the Archives & Rare Books Library.  Janice’s last day will be this Friday, the 17th, and she just gets the weekend off before starting an exciting new position in Dayton with CareSource as the Records and Information Manager.  It is a wonderful opportunity for Janice, and we certainly wish her well, but we are very sad that she is leaving.  She has been a consummate professional, and an exceptional co-worker.  Based on her work at UC, Janice will definitely excel in her new job.
