The Archives & Rare Books Library recently processed a collection of publications and photographs from the College of Business. Publications cover the years 2006-2008 and include postcards, brochures, advertisements, announcements, news releases, and other miscellaneous pieces. Photographs cover the years 1997-2001 and concentrate on Graduate/MBA activities such as graduation, international trips, and celebrations. The two-box collection has been accessioned as UA-10-07. Former UC Prez Nancy Zimpher Joins ARB Staff
In April, the Archives & Rare Books Library staff was bolstered by the addition of former University of Cincinnati president Nancy Zimpher. Zimpher served as UC’s chief executive from 2003 to 2009 and was referred to ARB by the campus office of the president in University Pavilion. Dr. Zimpher is currently welcoming students and researchers as they enter the archives reference area, so we encourage everyone to stop by and say hello. She has been accessioned as UA-10-06 and will be a permanent member of the University Archives. In this accompanying image, Dr. Zimpher has her picture taken with student worker Kathleen Forste.

McMicken Will Notice Found in Cincinnati German Newspaper

This past Tuesday when Professor Richard Schade was examining early Cincinnati German newspapers in the Archives & Rare Books Library, he came across an interesting item: a notice about Charles McMicken’s will in the April 1858 issue of Protestantische Zeitblatter. Considered the founder of the University of Cincinnati, McMicken died of pneumonia on March 30, 1858. His will stipulated a bequest to the City of Cincinnati to found a university, and after several fits and starts, UC was officially established in 1870. Continue reading
An Unexpected View of Blegen Library

Two years ago when CCM Librarian Mark Palkovic worked with a UC architecture seminar on historic preservation on projects that created designs for an academic music library, there was an unexpected bonus for the University Archives. The students’ projects centered on using the abandoned University YMCA building at the south end of campus to imagine its adaptive reuse as a library and performance space. Continue reading
Former Interim President Monica Rimai's Speeches and Appearances
The Archives & Rare Books Library has completed processing one box of speeches and appearance records of former Interim President Monica Rimai. Rimai joined the University in 2005 and had served as Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance since 2006. The Board of Trustees named her Interim President in March 2009 after Nancy Zimpher resigned to become Chancellor of the State University of New York system. Rimai served as Interim President from June 1, 2009 until November 1, 2009, when President Gregory H. Williams began his tenure. Rimai resigned her position as Senior Vice President for Administration and Finance in the fall of 2009 to become Senior Vice Chancellor and Chief Operating Officer of the State University of New York system. Barbara Ramusack Papers in the University Archives
Professor Emerita of History Barbara Ramusack has donated her professional papers covering the years 1958-2009 to the University Archives. Ramusack began teaching at UC in 1967 and served as professor, graduate studies director, head of the Department of History, and Charles Phelps Taft Professor of History, teaching in the areas of Women’s Studies and Asian Studies, with a research focus on India. Additionally, she served on a multitude of departmental, university, and professional committees. She retired on September 1, 2009 after 42 years of service to the University. Continue reading
Records Management News and Workshop Announcements
The March 2010 Records Update is now available on the Records Management website at http://www.libraries.uc.edu/libraries/arb/records_management/recordsupdate0310.html. Records Update is published between issues of Records Quarterly to keep you up-to-date on timely records management topics. This update includes information about an updated Sunshine Law manual and Sunshine week as well as summaries of public records cases that were decided in the courts of Ohio within the past month and records in the news.
Spring workshop offerings have been announced in conjunction with Records and Information Management Month. Two sessions of our introductory workshop will be offered as well as two sessions of a new workshop on the management of email and electronic records. Participation in these workshops is free, however registration is required and each session is limited to 40 people. Protest! The Campus and Reaction Against War
In May 1970 the University of Cincinnati closed its doors to students and canceled classes. Campus demonstrations over the escalating Vietnam War and the invasion of Cambodia, the deaths of protesters at Kent State University and Jackson State University, and discontent with the administration’s efforts in enfranchising African American students led to the occupation of Van Wormer Hall and Beecher Hall. UC came to a standstill as students, faculty, staff, and administrators grappled with the issues of world turmoil being faced at the university. Continue reading
The Papers of George B. Barbour, Geologist, World Traveler, and Teacher

Professor George Barbour was an internationally-known geologist and educator, whose life was filled with adventure. Barbour traveled the world for the first time at age 21, served in the First World War, and was involved with the research group that discovered the “Peking Man.” His papers, which are part of the University Archives collection in the Archives and Rare Books Library, contain correspondence, photographs, field diaries, and teaching materials which illustrate both his personal and professional life. Former President Nancy Zimpher's Papers in the University Archives
The Office of the President recently transferred nineteen boxes of papers from former UC President Nancy Zimpher for inclusion in the University Archives Collection. President Zimpher, UC’s first woman president, served the University from October 2003 to May 2009, when she resigned to become Chancellor of the State University of New York system.
The new collection, accessioned as UA-10-01, mainly consists of the hundreds of speeches that President Zimpher made between 2004 and 2007. She was a popular sought-after speaker, averaging one speech a day to both campus groups and outside organizations. Also included are subject files from her work with The Coalition of Urban Serving Universities and The Brookings Institute, as well as various publications from 2005-2009.
The Archives holds two other collections of President Zimpher’s papers as well: Collection Number UA-09-24 contains calendars from 2003-2009, and Collection Number UA-06-07 contains office files from 2003-2006.
