Explore the Albino Gorno Memorial Music (CCM) Library in its new location on the 6th floor of Blegen Library.
Accessible via the grand staircase in Blegen Library, the renovated CCM Library includes a computer and listening lab, group study and microfilm rooms, areas for study and reading, and space for the library’s collections of books, periodicals, and scores.
The University Honors Program transferred two sets of records to the Archives and Rare Books Library for inclusion in the University Archives. The University Honors Program was created in 1968 as the McMicken Honors Program in the College of Arts and Sciences. In 1991 the program was expanded to include students university-wide and became known as the Honors Scholars Program. The name changed again in 2007 to the University Honors Program when the program was redesigned to better meet the needs of students. Through the program, academically gifted students have the opportunity to enrich their academic experience through honors seminars for academic credit, experiential learning, travel, community engagement, and leadership opportunities. The Archives and Rare Books Library recently processed a new collection of records documenting activities of Iota Sigma Pi, a national chemistry honorary for women. Interest in an association for women in chemistry at the University of Cincinnati dates back to 1921 with the creation of Sigma Kappa, a local organization of woman chemistry majors. In 1923, they petitioned to become a chapter of Iota Sigma Pi and were installed as the Radium Chapter on May 26, 1923. Madame Curie, the first National Honorary Member of Iota Sigma Pi, was a sponsor of the chapter. Continue reading

In 2002, the University of Cincinnati Libraries was bequeathed an outstanding collection of books from the personal library of Robert E. Cazden, professor emeritus of library science at the University of Kentucky and a noted scholar on German-American history and literature. The portion of these materials that pertain to German-American studies – more than 1400 volumes – has now been fully catalogued and added to the German-Americana Collection in the Archives & Rare Books Library at the University of Cincinnati. This acquisition maintains the position of the German-Americana Collection as one of the premier libraries on this subject in the world. Continue reading
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have digitized Cooperative Engineer, a quarterly publication produced by students and alumni of UC’s College of Engineering from 1921 to 1975.
Accessible via http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cooperative_engineer/, each scanned issue of Cooperative Engineer can be viewed in its entirety. The issues are also searchable by keyword and by phrase. In addition, viewers of the collection can browse by issue cover.

If so, both the Archives and Rare Books Library and the Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions have a new way for you to find archival collections at the University of Cincinnati and across Ohio: Encoded Archival Description, or EAD. The OhioLINK Finding Aid Repository available at http://ead.ohiolink.edu/xtf-ead/, allows you to search archival collections across the State of Ohio, including those at the University of Cincinnati.
In 2004, after 90 years, the City of Cincinnati’s Municipal Reference Library was about to come to an ignominious end, consigned to the dumpster. With the active involvement of city planner Skip Forwood and UC history professor Judith Spraul-Schmidt, the bulk of this valuable collection of urban resource materials was rescued and given a home in the Archives & Rare Books Library’s Urban Studies Collection. Now, it is catalogued and available once more for research.

The Municipal Reference Library was created in 1913 under the Municipal Code of Cincinnati, which detailed the purpose of the library, and the Administrative Code, which stated that it would be maintained by the city’s planning department. Consisting primarily of city records, periodicals, reports, ordinances, news clippings, and studies, the MRL historically had been open to the public, but primarily used by city employees. School & Country: A Survey of Student Military Life at the University of Cincinnati is a new exhibit available on the Archives & Rare Books Library website. The exhibit emphasizes the unique impact that the military had on UC student life and the many contributions made by UC to the armed forces.
The National Book Foundation has a new blog up to celebrate it’s 60th anniversary. The Blog features 77 fiction novels that have won their National Book Award. Notice something strange?
