James Lee Next Speaker in the Digital Humanities Speaker Series on Nov. 1

UC Libraries and the College of Arts and Sciences present James Lee, assistant professor in digital humanities with a specialization in early modern English literature, on Tuesday, Nov. 1 in Langsam Library 462 as the next expert in the Digital Humanities Speaker Series. Open to any and all interested in digital humanities and digital scholarship (DH/DS), Lee will present a research talk and lead a hands-on experimental session. Participants are encouraged to come to either or both sessions that are of interest to them and to their work.

Winkler Center Marks Halloween with Creepy Exhibit of Medical Artifacts

Do you want to attend a Halloween event that promises to give you hauntingly horrific, history nightmares…nightmares that include visions of amputee kits, maggot and leach therapies, pharmaceutical potions from the 1800s and much much more?

Then come visit the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions on Monday, October 31, 2016 on the R- Level of the Health Sciences Library from 10am to 2pm.  On display will be historic documents, photos and artifacts from a variety of the health professions.

We guarantee you will leave the exhibit appreciating the advances made in modern medical treatments, therapies and technology available today.  All are welcome. Come if you dare!!!!!!!  Bwwaahhhahhhaaaaaa!!!

books by the banksIn partnership with the Books by the Banks festival, the College of Arts and Sciences and UC Libraries are co-hosting a group of panel sessions on Tuesday, October 11 on the fourth floor of Langsam Library from 2-5 p.m. “Genre Genius in Cincinnati: From SciFi to Hybrid Forms” will focus on science fiction and fantasy, comics and graphic novels, and the mixed mastery of hybrid forms. Attendees are invited to come to listen, learn, and share, and to stay for a casual writers’ lounge celebrating Cincinnati creatives and their community. The panels are free and open to all. Free Writing Assistance Every Wednesday in October in the HSL Informatics Lab

Writing assistance in the HSL Informatics Lab has been extended for another month!  Visit the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library any Wednesday in October and sign up for a same-day appointment with a writing tutor. Receive free writing assistance on all documents, including: personal statements, grant applications, reports and articles.

The writing tutor is available from 12:45 pm-5:45 pm on October 5th, 12th, 19th, and 26th in the Health Sciences Library’s Informatics Lab located on the E level. Visit the library to sign up for a same-day appointment with the writing tutor, then come back to the library at your scheduled time.

Needed:  Students to join us for pizza and technology trivia. It’s as easy as 1, 2, 3.

Coming in November – Free NCBI Training Workshop Series!

In November, the University of Cincinnati Health Sciences Library is partnering with The National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) to bring a series of workshops for researchers on a number of database housed within the NCBI domain.  All are welcome to attend.

The workshops will be held November 8th-10th 2016 in Kresge Auditorium in the College of Medicine. Each workshop will be 3  hours long and will be facilitated by NCBI experts and trainers.

Workshop topics include:

  1. Practical Guide to NCBI Blast
  2. Accessing Genomes, Assemblies and Annotation Products
  3. Accessing NCBI Human Variation and Medical Genetics Resources
  4. Exploring Gene Expression Information at the NCBI
  5. Principles of PubChem

Each workshop is free and open to the public, so please feel free to share this information with your friends and colleagues. We are extremely excited about these workshops and we hope you will be as well.
