The 24th issue of Museum Notes highlights the Leclanché voltaic cell in both its original wet-cell form and modern dry-cell form. This cell is the basis of most of our current everyday batteries from the D-cells used in traditional flashlights to the smaller AAA-cells used in many of our everyday electronic devices.

50 Minutes-1 Book: Arabian Nights and the Middle East

On January 16 , the Archives and Rare Books Library will host its first 50 Minutes-One Book lunchtime talk of 2014.  Elizabeth Frierson, Associate Professor in UC’s Department of History will present,  “A Thousand Nights and a Night: The Arabian Nights and the Middle East.”  Bring your lunch and join us at Noon in the Schott Seminar Room, 814 Blegen Library.

Complete list of Fellows of the Graduate School Now Available Online

In the Archives and Rare Books Library, we receive all sorts of questions related to the university’s history.  Some are simple to answer, but others can take hours of research and can require digging through many old files and records.  In the Fall of 2013, Steven R. Howe, a professor in UC’s Psychology Department, contacted us regarding his research on the history of the Fellows of the Graduate School.  His goal was to enhance the website for the Fellows of the Graduate School by creating a list of former fellows.   Since no comprehensive list existed, ARB staff helped Howe locate Board of Trustees minutes, course catalogs, faculty directories, and biographical files on individual faculty members.  His research resulted in a spreadsheet that lists all the Fellows of the Graduate School along with some biographical information on each of the fellows. Service Note: Key UC Web Services Down December 28 & 29

UC’s Data Center will be down for two days December 28 & 29 in order to receive a much-needed boost to its backup power supplies. Several major systems including “uc.edu” websites, Blackboard, and VPN access will be unavailable during this temporary outage. The UC Libraries Website, Library Catalog and access to off-campus resources via the proxy server will still be available.

Upcoming 50 Minutes-1 Book Lunchtime Talk and Welcome Reception for Eira Tansey

smallbookThe December presentation for 50 Minutes-1 Book features CCM Librarian Mark Palkovic talking about the new “World’s Smallest Book!” It is a 22-page micro-book measuring just 0.75 millimeters (or for the metric-impaired, 0.03 inches). Entitled Shiki no Kusabana, this book of flowers was published by Toppan Printing in Japan. Toppan printed the volume using its ultrafine printing technology, the same method used to avoid forgery of paper currency.

Elliston Project Featured in UC News

The Elliston Project, a digital archive of more than 700 poetry and fiction readings and lectures was recently featured in a UC news article by Courtney Danser. In her article, Danser details the history of the archive and interviews Professor Don Bogen, who has been instrumental in the founding of the Elliston Project.

Libraries Closed for Thanksgiving

UC Libraries will be closed Thursday and Friday, November 28 & 29 in observance of the Thanksgiving holiday. All library locations will close at 5pm on Wednesday, November 27. Regular hours resume Saturday, November 30. A listing of library hours is available online.

UCit@Langsam, the 24/7 computer and study space, will remain open. Entrance is available via Langsam Library’s 5th floor lobby.

Looking for a Place to Study Late for Exams?

owlLangsam Library will offer extended hours until 2am from Sunday, December 1 through Thursday, December 12.

After the regular Langsam Library hours, library space only will be open for students to study until 2am during exams. To enter the library after the regular closing time, students must do so via the 5th floor UCit@Langsam card-swipe entrance (a valid UC ID is required).
