Celebrate International Women’s Day with Two Exhibits Featuring Women on WWI Illustrated Sheet Music

In commemoration of both Women’s History Month (March) and the centennial of the United States entry into World War I (April 6, 1917), two new library exhibits feature illustrated sheet music from the era. “Sheet music served as propaganda for the war effort, but also offered solace—and sometimes levity—to those on the home front. Between the war years of 1914 and 1918, music publishers produced over 13,500 individual compositions,” said exhibit curator Theresa Leininger-Miller, associate professor of art history in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning. Dean’s Corner: A Deep Dive into DH/DS

Since UC Libraries announced the establishment of UC’s first Digital Scholarship Center (DSC) last September, the center’s co-directors Arlene Johnson and James Lee have been busy reaching out to the university community and laying groundwork. We sat down with both them and Dean Xuemao Wang to discuss their respective backgrounds in digital humanities/digital scholarship (DH/DS) and the early details of their plans for the DSC at the University of Cincinnati and UC Libraries.

When: Wednesday, March 8th, 3:30 – 5:30 PM.

How to participate: Form a team with a friend (each team will have 2 people) and answer question about world cultures, UC libraries, International Women’s Day and general knowledge.

What to look forward to: The top 3 team win fabulous prizes + Audience Prizes. Pizza and snacks will be served.

We are pleased to announce that the University of Cincinnati Libraries has recently introduced a new online video streaming service, Kanopy

With over 26,000 films and more added monthly, Kanopy includes thousands of award-winning documentaries, training films, and indie films. The database includes films from many of the leading producers, including the Criterion Collection, PBS, HBO California Newsreel, BBC, Kino Lorber, New Day Films, The Great Courses, First Run Features, The Video Project, and hundreds more.

Kanopy has an incredible range of films available: from PBS Shakespeare Uncovered Collection, through Food Choices to Art & Copy – viewers can filter subject searches by most popular,  subject, supplier, filmmaker and more.

Kanopy’s streaming interface makes it easy to watch, share, discuss and engage with films across campus. Instructors: it’s easy to use Kanopy in your coursework. Love Your Data Week Day 4 – Finding the Right Data

Welcome to Day 4 of “Love Your Data Week!” Whether you’re a student analyzing a data set for a school project or a researcher combining data sets to create new insights, finding the right data is essential! This blog post will list a few places you can look to find free, authoritative and unique data sets. The data sets have be broken down into three categories:  US Government Data Sets, International Data Sets and Google Data Sets.

US Government Data Sets

Data.gov http://data.gov – This web site has an eclectic mix of datasets from criminal justice to climate data.  This government site encourages people to use the data to create web and mobile applications and design data visualizations.

US Census Bureau http://www.census.gov/data.html – This web site provides data on the US population and economy.  Utilizing this site’s data has never been easier thanks to new: API’s, data visualizations, mobile apps and interactive web apps.

Healthdata.gov https://www.healthdata.gov/ – This web site includes US healthcare data.  The site is dedicated to making high value health data more accessible to entrepreneurs, researchers and policy makers.

National Climatic Data Center http://www.ncdc.noaa.gov/data-access/quick-links#loc-clim – This is the world’s largest archive of weather data. It has a robust collection of environmental, meteorological and climate data sets from the US National Climatic Data Center.

For the Love of the Library — Thank You!

The Clermont College Library hosted a special event, For the Love of the Library, on Thursday, February 9th.  The purpose of this event was to highlight the 1st floor renovations made possible by our donors and share plans for student-centered improvements to our library’s 2nd floor.
