Student Research Consultant’s experience at the XSEDE Big Data Workshop

Zhiyuan Yao is a Geography PhD candidate and a student research consultant in the Research Labs@ GMP, in the Geology-Math-Physics Library.  She is a GIS expert in the UC Libraries Research & Data Services Team and can help you with your GIS and other research data questions.  Below she describes her recent experience attending the XSEDE workshop on Big Data.

The Extreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment (XSEDE) is an NSF-funded virtual organization that integrates and coordinates the sharing of supercomputers with researchers nationally to support science. It has five computer resource infrastructures located across the nations, and Pittsburgh Supercomputing Center (PSC) is a part of it. PSC offers workshops from time to time through the year and aims to promote advanced data analysis among a variety of research fields using its supercomputer, Bridges. Thanks to IT@UC Research & Development, Innovation and Partnerships, who cooperates with PSC to offer the free workshop to UC community. The workshop is one of many events in the Data & Computational Science Series funded by the Provost Office.  I was glad to attend the Big Data workshop and give you a glimpse of the informative workshop.

The Big Data workshop was held on Oct 1st to Oct 2nd, from 11: 00 AM to 5: 30 PM. The workshop was well organized and followed a working flow: introducing background information, providing examples, and doing exercises. I really appreciated the background information introduced in this workshop, since it provided a holistic view of this workshop which was friendly to beginners. Besides, this workshop talked about several programs for big data analysis, such as Hadoop and Spark, and Tensorflow. The Big data workshop is one of PSC HPC workshop series, such as MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, et al. Description:                   This workshop will introduce scalable data analytics and machine learning.

It is a two-day, hands-on workshop using Hadoop, Spark and TensorFlow.

No prerequisites, although some familiarity with Python would be helpful.

When:                              Tuesday Feb 12th and Wednesday Feb 13th from 11 am to 5 pm.

UC Libraries Offering LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook to UC Research Community

The University of Cincinnati Libraries, with funding from the Office of the Provost, is pleased to present the LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook to the UC research community.

An enterprise-wide license with LabArchives has been obtained for UC and will last until June 30, 2018.*

LabArchives is the leading secure and intuitive cloud-based Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) application enabling researchers to easily create, store, share and manage their research data. Far more than an ELN, LabArchives provides a flexible, extensible platform that can be easily customized to match your lab’s workflow providing benefits to Principal Investigators, lab managers’ staff, post doctoral fellows and grad students. LabArchives can be integrated seamlessly with GraphPad Prism, MS-Office, PubMed, BOX, Learning Management Systems and a number of other software tools that are used extensively by researchers of the Academic Health Center and university wide. Additionally, the LA ELN works on multiple platforms and devices including Mac, Windows, Android and iPad devices, allowing researchers to store and access their data from virtually anywhere with Internet access.

Ohio Supercomputer Center workshops on April 13, 2017

IT@UC Research & Development will be hosting the Ohio Supercomputer Center for two workshops on Thursday, April 13. The morning workshop will provide an introduction to the Ohio Supercomputer Center resources and how to use them. In the afternoon, the workshop will cover Big Data Analytics and Spark.
The morning session will be held from 10-11:30 a.m. on West Campus in Langsam Library, room 475. The afternoon session will be held from 1:30-3:30 p.m. on East Campus in MSBRCV, E602. Laptops are needed if attendees want to participate in the hands-on portions of the sessions.

Announcing a new summer workshop!

Big Data Training for Translational Omics Research

Purdue University is pleased to announce the first Annual NIH-funded workshop on “Big data training

for translational omics research” in West Lafayette, IN on July 11 – 22, 2016. The two-week workshop will focus on providing biomedical researchers inexperienced in biomedical big data science with entry level training in big data science. The format of the workshop includes a series of problem-based activities to build familiarity and basic competency with established tools and publically available resources. These activities will be complemented by formal lectures on various topics important for big data science. The course is open to faculty, post-doctoral researchers, and graduate students.

The costs of tuition, room, and board are covered for accepted applicants!
