The Archives and Rare Books Library is proud to announce our partnership with the Cincinnati Museum Center. The Museum Center just announced their Shakespeare exhibit, which ARB is helping them prepare! Opening August 25th, the exhibit will be centered on Shakespeare’s First Folio (published 1623). The Folio is generously being lent to CMC by the Folger Shakespeare Library, which toured the work throughout the U.S. just last year. The exhibit will explore Shakespeare through time—how his works have adapted, what’s influenced new interpretations, and how appreciation of his work has evolved. There will be a focus on how Cincinnati has interacted with Shakespeare over time. Continue reading

Mastodons on Display in the Geo-Math-Phys Library
UC Libraries is honored to host one of four Cincinnati Museum Center collections currently on display at the university as part of the Curate My Community program while the museum undergoes renovation.
Visit the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library to view Big Bone Lick: A Place of Discovery. From mastodons and sabre-tooth tigers to early American Indians and the Founding Fathers, Big Bone Lick was a gathering place for some of the Ice Age’s most iconic animals, early American hunters and the site of America’s first paleontological expedition, organized by President Thomas Jefferson. The site, and its treasures, continue to be extensively examined by UC researchers.

UC’s First Thesis Comes Home to UC Libraries

Eaton family gives historic documents, including letter from Thomas Jefferson, to UC Libraries
CINCINNATI – Thursday, July 21, 2016 – The University of Cincinnati Libraries today received the thesis of John Hough James, the first graduate of Cincinnati College, now the University of Cincinnati. In addition to the thesis, UC Libraries also received associated research materials, including an 1820 letter from Thomas Jefferson. The rare gift comes from siblings Russell Eaton III, James M. Eaton and Frances Eaton Millhouser, the great-great-grandchildren of John Hough James.
“My siblings and I are pleased to present to the University of Cincinnati our cherished family possessions of John Hough James (JHJ), our great, great, grandfather, the valedictorian of the university’s first class. These possessions include an 1820 letter from Thomas Jefferson to JHJ containing requested source material for his senior thesis, his hand written thesis booklet and his membership in a local volunteer fire company,” Russell said. We are excited to announce that excerpts from Pharmaceutical Education In the Queen City : 150 Years of Service, 1850-2000 by Michael A. Flannery and Dennis B. Worthen, originally published in 2001, documenting the students and graduates who attended the Cincinnati College of Pharmacy, Queen City College of Pharmacy, and the University of Cincinnati College of Pharmacy from 1850 through 2000 are now available in the UC Digital Resource Commons (DRC). The DRC started as an initiative of the OhioLink consortium of libraries to create a digital repository service that would help streamline access to unique collections and facilitate scholarly communication.

We are proud to announce the completion of the first interview in The Christ Hospital Health Network in collaboration with the Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions Oral History Series; our first interview subject was one of Cincinnati’s most prominent physicians who is also considered to be “The Doctors’ Doctor”, Dr. William Schreiner. The entire interview is now available in a streaming format through the UC Libraries mediaspace.

The online newsletter will still contain the latest information about the organization, people, places and happenings in UC Libraries, but will no longer be produced in print. About the Conference
Hundreds of African-American librarians, library staffers, vendors and advocates from around the country gathered August 7-11, 2013 at the Northern Kentucky Convention Center to attend the 8th National Conference of African-American Librarians (NCAAL). The conference, sponsored by the Black Caucus of the American Library Association, provided attendees the opportunity to network, as well as to gain knowledge and skills needed to meet the challenges faced by African-American librarians and the communities of color they serve.
