Student Art Spotlight: Samantha Padgett, Ellen Taylor, and Natalia Martinez

The Clermont College Library is proud to present a trio of student artists and a trio of their works during the summer term — Samantha Padgett’s soulful still lifes in pencil, Ellen Taylor’s bold depictions of fire, water, earth, and spirit and Natalia Martinez’s manga-inspired meditations on love and death.

The exhibit will run through August. Thanks to Professors Kelly Frigard and Anthony Wolking for coordinating another fantastic collection of student art in our library.

I have made a few friends with being in the library and I also love my co-workers! The library also hosts nice programs and seems like they cater to the staff/faculty and students as much as they can.

Fuel Your Late-Night Studying in Langsam with Coffee and Snacks.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT! UC Libraries and Food Services have partnered to provide free coffee and snacks beginning at 10pm each night for students studying for exams in Langsam Library.

Langsam Library space will be opened 24/7 for exams beginning noon on Sunday, November 29 through 6pm Friday, December 11. Regular hours will resume Saturday, December 12.

Langsam Library is one of the busiest places on campus. Students take advantage of every corner of the building when looking for a place to study. With the goal of providing more comfortable yet practical places for students to work and study, we have added new lounge furniture to the 4th floor of Langsam Library. The modular furniture provides a variety of seating options — booths, benches and individual seats — as well as built-in outlets for plugging in laptops. Students are already making good use of the new furniture in the short time it has been available.

Culture of Books and Reading Students Deposit A Ghost Story in the Archives

Recently returned from a study tour to Edinburgh, Scotland over spring break, the students in the University Honors Program seminar “The Culture of Books and Reading” added one of their assignments to the ARB website – a story entitled “The Sin-Eaters Ghost.”  A group project written by each student contributing a page, the story is just one of the assignments for this course in which the traditional and emerging reading habits and the heritage of books are explored in cultures around the world.

Go to The Polls Armed With Reliable Information

Recently I came across this stunning quote from James Madison in a fellow librarian’s blog post:

“A popular Government without popular information, or the means of acquiring it, is but a Prologue to a Farce or a Tragedy, or perhaps both. Knowledge will forever govern ignorance, and a people who mean to be their own Governors, must arm themselves with the power which knowledge gives.”

On November 6 UC students along with the all voters will be casting their votes in the General Election. Do you have all the information you need to make the important decisions?

Earlier this month we asked the students who visit Langsam library to share the sources of information they use in order to decide how to vote.

Tumblr was the most popular source followed by Facebook and reddit.  The responses featured online news sources, TV and radio channels and talk shows, newspapers and magazine titles ranging from The New Republic to Huffington Post, and a broad range of websites, including RealClearPolitics , League of Women Voters, and predictably Wikipedia.
