What I Did on My Summer Vacation, Part 1

Hi, all! Kellie Tilton, UCBA Librarian, here to tell you a bit about how I spent my summer vacation. As luck would have it, I was lucky enough to have two pretty major library-related trips this summer. This is all about the first one.

Back in February, I told you about my trip to the American Library Association’s MidWinter Conference in Atlanta, Georgia. While there, my fellow committee members on the Young Adult Library Services Association’s (YALSA) Alex Award and myself were tasked with selecting ten winners of our award. It was so rewarding to see the amazing feedback based on the list we talked, debated and voted on.

At ALA’s Annual Conference this past June, the 2017 Committee gathered again to honor those award winners. We were lucky enough to have six of our ten authors in attendance and they were all charming, wonderful and hilarious in the speeches they gave. After that, there was a massive author signing. It was an amazing end to over a year of work.

One of our winners gives an Alex Award shout out in the new printing.

Simultaneously, I was also meeting with the 2018 Alex Award Committee. (Committee appointments are two years long!) Once again, we gathered in a hotel conference room to discuss the massive amount of books we’ve been reading, all with the aim to award the 10 best with the Alex Award next year. I’m looking forward to experiencing the entire whirlwind again!

UCBA Library Display Celebrates National African American Read-In and Black History Month

Black History Month and the National African American Read-In book display.

Stop by the UCBA Library to browse and borrow books in honor of Black History Month and the National African American Read-In (NAARI). Titles that include a yellow NAARI bookmark are written by African Americans and can be read for the NAARI event scheduled for Tuesday, February 28 at 12:00 pm in the Muntz 119 Lobby.

Librarians Bookin’ It at the UCBA Dash

UCBA librarians Lauren Wahman, Michelle McKinney and Heather Maloney (accompanied by her family) showed up bright and early to represent the library at the 4th Annual UCBA Blue Ash Dash 5K for Scholarships. The rest of the library staff opted for the ‘sleep in’ option bringing the department to 100% participation. $52,000 was raised at this year’s event with proceeds going to scholarships for students at UC Blue Ash.

ucba-fac-researchAs another fall semester gets underway, the UCBA librarians are ready to help faculty with their research needs.  Whether it’s discipline-specific, creative, or a classroom-based (e.g. Scholarship of Teaching & Learning) research project, we’re getting you started with a newly updated Faculty Research Guide (guides.libraries.uc.edu/ucba-facultyresearch).  You still find those resources that you know and trust, but you’ll also find new grant and data management resources along with contact information for your go-to experts (including your library faculty liaison).  In addition, check out UC’s institutional repository – Scholar@UC – as well as OhioLINK’s Digital Resource Commons.  As the semester moves forward, we’ll continue to add more resources.
