Libraries Begin Break Hours

OhioLINK Notice Update
UPDATE – all systems are working now.
OhioLINK reports: “Unfortunately we are experiencing a SAN network failure that is preventing access to multiple OhioLINK services including the Electronic Journal Center, some OSearch databases, the Digital Media Center and other services. Systems engineers are working to resolve the problem and we hope to resume service as soon as possible. We apologize for the interruption in service at this very busy time of the year.”
Langsam Library Exam Hours
Looking for a place to study during exams? Langsam Library has exam hours. The hours are listed online and at the library.
And don’t forget that UCit@Langsam is open 24 hours on the 5th floor of Langsam Library. Entrance after hours is via the 5th floor lobby with a valid UC I.D.
Bates Visual Guide to Physical Examination
(Volume 1-18, 4th edition) is now available as streaming videos on the Health Sciences Library website and is available for 40 concurrent users.

On Wednesday, November 25, 2009, a DAAP fine art student, Jennifer Morgan gave a critique of her snow globe project in the DAAP Library. Created for her class (Installation Art), Jennifer’s snow globes are constructed from figurines and other found objects, which are housed in jars filled with baby oil.
Though snow globes are generally considered “kitsch” objects and are associated with vacationers and leisure, this student’s project challenges this view by placing elements of destruction, such as a canary in a coal mine, a cowboy surrounded by real tobacco, and a black widow spider, inside a snow globe.
Jennifer first saw the DAAP Library snow globe collection her sophomore year during a graphic design class. Now a senior, she was inspired for this project after the snow globes were placed more visibly on the library shelves. She recalls that DAAP’s snow globes had been displayed in cases before this year, and is glad they are out in the library for more people to see. Jennifer’s globes are displayed among the DAAP Library’s collection to surprise and delight daap students and visitors alike.

UC Libraries Make Cooperative Engineer Available Online
The University of Cincinnati Libraries have digitized Cooperative Engineer, a quarterly publication produced by students and alumni of UC’s College of Engineering from 1921 to 1975.
Accessible via http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cooperative_engineer/, each scanned issue of Cooperative Engineer can be viewed in its entirety. The issues are also searchable by keyword and by phrase. In addition, viewers of the collection can browse by issue cover.
President Williams visits the DAAP Library
On Wednesday, November 4th, newly inducted University President, Gregory Williams, paid a visit to the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art, and Planning (DAAP Library).
During his visit, President Williams enjoyed viewing the artists’ book Global University, part of DAAP Library’s special collection of nearly 400 artists’ books. The one-of-a-kind book is an examination of both the story of one immigrant to the US and the University of Cincinnati’s globalization plan. Written and created by DAAP student Anne Catherine Yu See, Global University spoke to the interests of the President, who is the author of Life on the Color Line: The True Story of a White Boy Who Discovered He Was Black. President Williams was raised partially in Virginia, where he attended an all-white school. However, he discovered that his father was biracial and had a white father and black mother. President Williams, his brother, and his father later moved to a predominantly black neighborhood in Indiana, and Williams was not accepted by black relatives because of his white heritage and was ostracized by whites for his black ancestry. As a result of his childhood experiences, President Williams now holds a special interest in diversity issues and matters of civil rights.
He was also able to view the DAAP Library’s collection of over 340 snow globes – the many New York snow globes were a favorite after his tenure as President of City College, New York. President Williams left DAAP library with a charge to bring in a new snow globe from Indiana, the state where he attended high school after moving from his home state of Virginia.
