SAE Standards and Papers (Trial Access)

Through November 10, UC has trial access to SAE Mobilus, a vast repository of engineering and technical content for the automotive, aerospace, and commercial vehicle industries.  The trial includes access to SAE standards and technical papers.

Standards cover these areas: Ground Vehicle Standards (J-Reports), Aerospace Standards, and Aerospace Material Specifications (AMS). Technical papers include thousands of reports on the latest advances and research in all areas of mobility engineering, including ground vehicle, aerospace, off-highway transport, and manufacturing technology.

Your feedback on the SAE Mobilus trial is important to our evaluation.  Please send comments to: Ted.Baldwin@uc.edu (Ted Baldwin, Director of the Science and Engineering Libraries).  Following the trial, we will use your feedback to determine if we pursue a campus subscription.

Most UC Libraries Closed Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 3

labor dayUC Libraries will be closed Monday, September 3 for Labor Day, except for the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open 9am-5pm. This closing includes the Walter C. Langsam Library 4th floor space, which will close Sunday, September 2 at 11pm and re-open Tuesday, September 4 at 7:45am.

july 4thUC Libraries will be closed, Wednesday, July 4 for Independence Day. This includes Langsam Library’s 4th floor, which will close Tuesday, July 3 at 11pm and reopen Thursday, July 5 at 8am. Normal hours for all library locations will resume July 5th. Have a safe and enjoyable July 4th.

UC Libraries Closed Memorial Day, May 28

memorial dayAll UC Libraries locations will be closed Monday, May 28 in observance of Memorial Day, except for the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will remain open 9am-5pm. This closing includes the Langsam Library 4th floor space, which will close Sunday, May 27 at 5pm and re-open Tuesday, May 29 at 8am.

Regular library hours for all locations will resume Tuesday, May 29.

XSEDE High Performance Computing Summer Boot Camp 2018

As part of the Data and Computational Science Series funded by the Provost Office, IT@UC and UC Libraries will host a XSEDE HPC Summer Boot Camp.  

The University of Cincinnati is pleased to be a remote site for the XSEDE Summer Boot Camp, taught by the Pittsburg Supercomputing Center. The workshop will run from 11:00 am to 5:00 pm each day from June 4-7th. This 4-day event will include training with MPI, OpenMP, OpenACC, and accelerators.  The workshop will conclude with a special hybrid exercise contest that will challenge participants to apply their skills for three weeks after the training. Winners will be awarded the Fifth Annual XSEDE Summer Boot Camp Championship Trophy and an XSEDE Badge will be available to those who complete the challenge.

XSEDE (eXtreme Science and Engineering Discovery Environment) is a virtual system that provides compute resources for scientists and researchers from all over the country. Its mission is to facilitate research collaboration among institutions, enhance research productivity, provide remote data transfer, and enable remote instrumentation. UC Libraries Names Brad Warren Associate Dean of Library Services

Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian, announces that Brad Warren will join the University of Cincinnati Libraries as the associate dean of library services starting August 3, 2018.

Brad comes to UC Libraries from Yale University where he has served as the director of access service for Sterling Memorial and Bass Libraries since March 2009. Prior to Yale, Brad held various librarian positions at the University of North Carolina Charlotte J. Murrey Atkins Library and North Carolina State University Libraries. He received his BA in comparative literature and history from Indiana University and his Masters in library science from Indiana University.

Brad will be a member of the Dean’s Cabinet and his leadership portfolio will include Langsam Library’s Research, Teaching and Services Department, the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art and Planning, the Albino Gorno Memorial Music Library, the John Miller Burnam Classics Library and the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services Library.

Langsam Library Exhibit Celebrates Appalachian Culture

appalachian heritage monthCincinnati lies just at the border or outer edge of Appalachia, a cultural region in the Eastern United States that stretches from the Southern Tier of New York to northern Alabama, Mississippi and Georgia and includes portions of Pennsylvania, Ohio, North and South Carolina and all of West Virginia. A new exhibit on display on the 4th floor lobby of the Walter C. Langsam Library showcases resources from UC Libraries in celebration of Appalachian culture and heritage. Included are resources from the collections of the Albino Gorno Memorial (CCM) Library, Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library, the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, College of Engineering and Applied Sciences Library, the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP), and Langsam. Also featured are online resources that showcase and inform about Appalachian culture.

The exhibit was curated by UC Libraries’ Mikaila Corday, Susan Banoun and Carissa Thatcher. It was designed and produced by Sam Kane, communications design co-op student, and Melissa Cox Norris.

The Archivision Digital Research Library is currently comprised of 77,000 images of architecture, archaeological sites, gardens, parks and works of art with broad appeal in humanities teaching. The collection is curated by Scott Gilchrist, a trained architect as well as professional photographer, who is actively adding new content. The Library spans the globe and all time periods, offering a mix of historic and contemporary material.

 

Ohio Supercomputer Center to Provide Two Workshops on Resources

The Ohio Supercomputer Center will offer two workshops on its resources and how to use them Tuesday March 13, on both East and West campuses.
IT@UC Research & Development will be hosting the Ohio Supercomputer Center for two workshops on Tuesday, March 13. The morning workshop will provide an introduction to the Ohio Supercomputer Center resources and how to use them. In the afternoon, the workshop will cover Big Data Analytics and Spark.

The Ohio Supercomputer Center, headquartered in Columbus, partners with Ohio researchers to develop proposals to funding organizations and is the state’s leading strategic research group.

The morning session will take place on West Campus, Langsam Library, room 475 from 10:30 a.m. – 12 p.m. The afternoon session will take place on East Campus in MSBRCV, E602 from 1:30 – 4 p.m. Laptops are needed if attendees want to participate in the hands-on portions of the sessions.

Workshops are open to anyone interested in learning about OSC services and those who want to use their accounts more efficiently; this is a great opportunity to ask any questions you have about performing your computational research on our systems. There are no prerequisites for attending.

 Morning topics include:

  • High performance computing concepts
  • Hardware and software available at OSC
  • Storage and file systems
  • How to start a new project and request resources
  • How to use our web portal OnDemand
  • Introduction to batch processing

Afternoon topics will include:

  • Introduction to Big Data
  • Data analytics at OSC
  • Running Hadoop and Spark at OSC
