Emily Kean New Research and Education Librarian in the Health Sciences Library

Emily KeanUC Libraries is pleased to welcome Emily Kean as the research and education librarian in the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library. In this position, Emily will provide research, consultation, instruction, collection development and outreach services to the University of Cincinnati Academic Health Center. She will serve as liaison to Academic Health Center colleges with a focus on Nursing and Allied Health.

Emily has over 10 years of experience working in libraries, most recently serving as the digital services librarian at the Boone County Public Library.  Prior to that she was the electronic resources librarian at the Christ Hospital.  Emily brings with her great technical skills and a passion for teaching and developing new and innovative ways to provide instruction and library services.

The University of Cincinnati Libraries is pleased to announce Elizabeth Scarpelli as director of the new University of Cincinnati Press. The director’s role is to lead and provide oversight of all Press functions including acquisitions, marketing, administration and business, as well as to build a regional, national and international reputation for the University of Cincinnati Press as an innovative 21st century academic press.

“We are very fortunate to have secured Liz to lead the University of Cincinnati Press,” said Xuemao Wang, dean and university librarian. “Her enthusiasm for this exciting, new endeavor coupled with her rich experience in academic publishing make her the ideal choice to create, share and implement a successful vision for the Press.”

New Exhibit Celebrates Native American Heritage in Our Collections

Installed on the 4th floor of Langsam Library, the exhibit features Native American history and culture resources from the collections of UC Libraries. Included are books, movies, e-journals and online digital collections and databases.

The exhibit was curated by Mikaila Corday and Susan Banoun, both of Content Services in UC Libraries, and was designed by Sami Scheidler, third year design student in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

The Digital Analytics Program of the GSA has a website that showcases traffic to federal government agency websites. Analytics.usa.gov (https://analytics.usa.gov/ ) provides a window into how people are interacting with the government online. The program helps government agencies understand how people find, access, and use government services online.

Big Bone Lick Exhibit

UC Libraries is honored to host one of four Cincinnati Museum Center collections currently on display at the university as part of the Curate My Community program while the museum undergoes renovation.

Visit the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library to view Big Bone Lick: A Place of Discovery. From mastodons and sabre-tooth tigers to early American Indians and the Founding Fathers, Big Bone Lick was a gathering place for some of the Ice Age’s most iconic animals, early American hunters and the site of America’s first paleontological expedition, organized by President Thomas Jefferson. The site, and its treasures, continue to be extensively examined by UC researchers.

Dean’s Corner: Fall 2016 Dean’s Advisory Council

This month I held my third biannual Dean’s Advisory Council meeting. The focus of this fall’s meeting was Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship (DH/DS). The two-day meeting included: a tour of Northern Kentucky University’s Steele Library and College of Informatics; a presentation with the co-leaders of UC Libraries’ new Digital Scholarship Center; a tour of UC Libraries’ Preservation Lab; and a luncheon with guests from across the university, including Interim Provost Peter Landgren, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Eileen Strempel, and representatives from Student Government and the Graduate Student Governance.

Changhong (Bella) Wu and Bo Sun, librarians from Northeast Normal University (NENU) in Changchun, China, visited the UC Libraries November 15th-17th through a librarian exchange program between Ohio University and NENU. As the first cohort, Bella and Bo will stay in the United States for three months visiting libraries across the country and conducting research. Topics they are interested at UC Libraries are Ohiolink, collection development strategies, digital collections and digital and information literacy education. We look forward to meeting more visitors from NENU in the future.
