“Bridging Pride to Knowledge” New Exhibit on Langsam’s 5th Floor

ExhibitA new exhibit has been installed on the 5th floor lobby of Langsam Library in honor of June being LGBT Pride Month. “Bridging Pride to Knowledge” highlights UC Libraries’ resources (books, journals, DVD’s databases, etc.) in LGBTQ subject areas.  It includes information on the Stonewall Riots of June 1969 and features notable authors such as Edna St. Vincent Millay, Radclyffe Hall, Oscar Wilde and more. A bibliography is available in print at the exhibit and online.

The “Bridging Pride to Knowledge” exhibit was curated by Mikaila Corday and Susan Banoun of UC Libraries. Samantha Scheidler, spring semester communications co-op design student, designed the exhibit. Continue reading →

Nominations Sought for Next UC Faculty ‘Life of the Mind’ Presenter

Life of the Mind graphicThe Life of the Mind Steering Committee is seeking nominations for the next featured UC faculty member to present at the Sept. 20 lecture. The chosen UC faculty presenter should be an expert in their respective field with a proven record of scholarship or creation of works, as well as be an engaging speaker able to address an audience with broad interests.

In addition, the successful candidate will be:

  • Accomplished, distinguished UC faculty member with national/international reputation and whose achievements illuminate the work of the university and beyond.
  • Recognized as an expert in their field of study, research or creation of works.
  • Experienced at presenting their work to a diverse audience outside the classroom.
  • Excellent and engaging speaker able to relate to a non-specialist audience.
  • Provocative topic of study/research/creative work. The speaker should ask questions that span broad intellectual interests and spark conversation from multiple perspectives.

The University of Cincinnati to Launch a New Academic Press

The University of Cincinnati announced today the formation of a new academic press. With a dual publishing focus on social justice and community engagement, the mission of the University of Cincinnati Press is to cultivate and disseminate scholarly works of the highest quality for the enhancement of the global community.

“It is a historic and exciting moment for a great research university like the University of Cincinnati to join the elite group of institutions that operate an academic press,” said President Santa J. Kevin Grace Receives Dean’s Award for Faculty Excellence

Dean and University Librarian Xuemao Wang has selected Kevin Grace, University Archivist and Head of the Archives and Rare Books Library, as the 2015-2016 recipient of the Dean’s Award for Faculty Excellence.

The newly created award from UC’s Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost Beverly Davenport and Vice President for Research Patrick Limbach is intended to recognize outstanding faculty members in each college who represent excellence in all its forms. These faculty development awards are meant to recognize their contributions to their respective colleges and to UC, as well as support their professional efforts. Each recipient will receive $2,000 in discretionary funds to be used to support their teaching or research. Continue reading →

Celebrate Preservation Week at an Open House April 29 in the Preservation Lab

In celebration of National Preservation Week, the Preservation Lab will host its annual open house on April 29 from 1:30-3:30pm.

Located on the 300 level of Langsam Library, the Preservation Lab preserves and conserves the collections of UC Libraries and the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County. At the open house, lab staff will demo some of the techniques and equipment used to repair and protect materials, as well as showcase some of their recent projects. In addition to the usual fun, this year visitors to the Preservation Lab will have an opportunity to make their own sheet of paper with plant fibers beaten with a Hollander beater.

Study 24/7 in Langsam Library during Exams

owlCramming for an exam? Need a safe, quiet place to study?

Langsam Library space will be open 24/7 beginning noon on Sunday, April 17 through 11pm, Thursday, April 28. Regular hours will resume 8am on Thursday, April 28.

To enter the library after regular hours, students must do so via the 5th floor UCit@Langsam card-swipe entrance (a valid UC ID is required).

No library staff or services requiring assistance will be available during the extended hours (with the exception of UCit@Langsam); however, security will be present thanks to UC’s Public Safety.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT! UC Libraries and Food Services have partnered to provide coffee and snacks beginning at 10pm each night for students studying in Langsam.

As always, please be safe when leaving the library no matter what the hour.

UC offers NightRide to get students home safely. NightRide can be reached at 556-RIDE or speak to the Langsam Library Security Officer before you exit the building and they will contact NightRide.

The Woodside/Library Garage has Safe Zone Parking, which allows those that enter the garage after 8:00 p.m. and leave by 5:59 a.m. to exit for $1.

 

Register Now for the Second Annual THATCamp University of Cincinnati 2016

THATCamp-Carousel-jpgJoin UC Libraries for THATCamp University of Cincinnati 2016, an unconference, which is an open meeting where humanists and technologists of all skill levels and interests gather to learn and to build together in sessions proposed on the spot.
THATCamp (The Humanities And Technology Camp) University of Cincinnati 2016 is free and open to all and will be held on the 4th floor of Langsam Library. The event will begin at noon on Monday, May 2, and conclude on Tuesday, May 3 at 4:30pm. Undergraduate and graduate students, faculty and staff, as well as scholars, archivists, museum professionals, developers and programmers, K-12 teachers and administrators from within and outside UC who have an involvement or interest in digital humanities are welcome and encouraged to attend. Sessions for THATCamp University of Cincinnati 2016 will be determined during the opening session on May 2; however, a preliminary schedule has been devised and posted online at http://ucincinnati2016.thatcamp.org/schedule/.    Continue reading →

Starbucks is Coming to Langsam Library

Construction will begin Monday, April 11 to build a Starbucks Cafe on the east wall near the entrance of Langsam Library.

This project is scheduled for completion late August in time to open the beginning of fall semester 2016. During spring exams, April 17-28, construction activity will be limited so that students can continue to study in the library.

The copiers will be relocated on the fourth floor near the existing stand-up kiosks. The reference cubicle will be disassembled and this service will take place in room 451.

Thank you for your patience during construction. The cafe is part of a larger renovation plan already underway in Langsam to make it more inspirational, flexible, dynamic and collaborative, conducive for group and individual work. Read more on past and future Langsam renovation plans.
