What’s For Lunch?

Could you imagine being on campus today and not having a place to go for lunch or even more shocking – not being a short walk from a Starbucks?   From burgers to burritos to caramel Frappuccinos, there are plenty of options for breakfast, lunch, dinner, or even a quick coffee break on or near UC’s West (Main) campus. With all of us so used to so many food options, we were stumped when the University’s Architect’s office asked us “Where was the university’s first dining hall and when did it open?”

We do not always have the answers in our heads, but we can always come up places to start looking. The Cincinnatian (UC’s yearbook) is a great place to start especially for questions that have anything to do with UC’s students. What makes this resource even better is that UC’s yearbooks have been digitized and are freely available online through the Libraries’ website: http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cincinnatian/ Lucky for us, the 1914 Cincinnatian provided the clue that we needed. An announcement in this yearbook stated, “Varsity’s New Lunch-Room, opened February 9th 1914.” The article also included a menu with interesting options like pineapple and lettuce salad with egg dressing and cold ham and a pickle. Memories of Shakespeare and the Lyric Theatre

Ad for Shakespeare seriesLook what we found! CCM students of days gone by customarily made a scrapbook of their experiences while they were in school. The scrapbook of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music (one half of what has become UC’s College-Conservatory of Music) student Virginia Inez Day recently came into our hands just in time for us to start our Shakespeare celebration! For those of you who have been in the cheap seats, 2016 is the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death and we are commemorating it with a year of promoting our Shakespeare holdings in the Archives & Rare Books Library and documenting the history of Shakespeare productions in Cincinnati. Introduction to Cytoscape: Network Visualization Software

Cytoscape is an open source molecular interactions visualization tool that allows the exploration of molecular interactions and biological pathways and integrates these networks with annotations, gene expression profiles, and other data. The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library is facilitating a webinar on Cytoscape that will provide an introduction to some of the core functionality of Cytoscape, including the loading and manipulation of experimental data.

The webinar will be held on Monday, September 21st at 9am.

Advancing Genomic Research at the University of Cincinnati

The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library is facilitating a webinar on Golden Helix’s suite of genomics analysis tools. The webinar will provide an overview of: SNP and Variation Suite which offers users the ability to manage and analyze genomic and phenotypic data, VarSeq which allows users to annotate and filter variants obtained from NextGen sequencing and GenomeBrowse, a powerful genomic data visualization tool.

Beginning of fall semester, a lot of new students on campus…it’s time for the Resource Fair!  The UCBA Library is an annual participant in this college-wide event that showcases the variety of support services and resources available to students.  This year, library faculty members Heather Maloney, Michelle McKinney, and Lauren Wahman shared cool things about the Library in addition to giving away candy and info geek buttons.  And, we were lucky to have one of our student assistants, Stacey Marshall, join us at the table this year!

The Origin and Evolution of The Christian R. Holmes Hospital

Dr. Christian R. Holmes. This photo serves as a link to the Winkler Center blog, “Dr. Christian R. Holmes, The Cincinnati General Hospital, and the Surgical Amphitheater.”

The history of the “Holmes Hospital” is typically remembered as beginning in the early 1900’s with the construction of the building then and presently located adjacent to Eden Avenue; however, long before that land was developed for such purpose, there existed an original “Dr. C. R. Holmes Hospital” once located on East Eighth Street. This private establishment was made possible through Dr. Holmes collaboration with his associate at the time, Dr. D. T. Vail. Dr. Though Holmes’ wife, Bettie, was perhaps just as indispensable as Holmes himself – she was the supervisor of Holmes’ hospital for more than five years. Opening probably sometime in the very-late 1800’s, for several years it was home to a Nurses’ Training School. Though renovated in 1917, it closed that same year when Holmes took up duties at Camp Sherman. It was never re-opened.

The Global Services Librarian, Hong Cheng, from the College of Engineering and Applied Science (CEAS) Library greeted new faces from China, India, Korea, and many other countries. Your voices are heard, international bearcats! Not only can you check out stacks books from any UC library and return to any library, the library also helps get a copy if none of the libraries has it via OhioLink. Jobs in the library? Renovations Underway on the Fourth Floor of Langsam Library.

Students starting classes Monday will be met with construction and an enhanced classroom in Langsam Library.

Once completed, the renovations will provide more collaborative, flexible and comfortable work spaces to do research and to study in Langsam, as well as offer improved access to enhanced technology. Work began this summer with the renovation of the Langsam classroom 462 and will continue throughout the fall semester on the fourth floor of the library.

As a result of the construction, The Desk@Langsam (the main service desk) has been moved to just beyond the main staircase. Signs and way finding lead users to the temporary desk location. All other Langsam Library services and spaces remain open and available for use at this time.

LangsamUC’s Welcome Week kicked off Wednesday, August 19 as new students began moving in. UC Libraries is part of the weekend festivities to acclimate students to campus.

Stop by Langsam Library Saturday and Sunday, August 22 & 23 from noon-5pm for lemonade, cookies AND a free print of your class schedule.

Visit any of the three Science Libraries (College of Engineering and Applied Science, Geology-Mathematics-Physics, Chemistry-Biology) from 1-5pm on Sunday for treats, beverages and brief tours of the libraries.
