Next Life of the Mind Lecture Scheduled for May 10

The second in the Life of the Mind lecture series on the theme “technology” is scheduled for Tuesday, May 10 at 3:30-5pm in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center. Free and open to the UC community and public, Life of the Mind features interdisciplinary conversations with UC faculty around a one-word theme. Each quarter, there are two Life of the Mind sessions with three “thought provocateurs” contributing to each session. Each scholar provides a 15-minute talk followed by audience Q&A.

UC Libraries Pay Tribute to UC Authors, Editors & Composers

The 25th annual Authors, Editors and Composers reception and program was held Tuesday, April 12, in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center. At the event, UC Libraries honored 250 faculty members and their 340 creative and scholarly works published in the year 2010. Participating faculty members represented every UC college plus the Career Development Center, the Division of Professional Practice, the Institute for Policy Research, the Office of Research, and the Libraries.

eBooks Now Listed in Alphabetic Order by Title

The Health Sciences Library eBooks page is now arranged alphabetically by title!

The Health Sciences Library’s ebook collection has grown by leaps and bounds over the last several years.  On the newly revised eBook page there are links to individual titles, searchable ebook collections, and for some very large ebook collections like CRCnetBASE and Knovel, no individual titles but instead, relevant searchable topic areas.

UC Faculty-Submit Your 2010 Published Works to Authors, Editors & Composers

On Tuesday, April 12, 2011, the University of Cincinnati Libraries will once again recognize the publishing and creative accomplishments of UC’s faculty at the annual “Authors, Editors & Composers” event. Scheduled for 3:30pm in the Russell C. Myers Alumni Center at UC, “Authors, Editors & Composers” will pay tribute to the 2010 scholarly and creative works of UC’s faculty with a reception, presentation of selected works, a printed bibliography, and an exhibit.

To submit your 2010 published works for inclusion in “Authors, Editors & Composers,” complete the online form.

Libraries Awarded a LSTA Minigrant to Digitize The Cincinnatian Yearbook, 1951-2006, to Join First Set of Yearbooks Already Digitized

1940 CincinnatianThe University of Cincinnati Libraries have been awarded a $15,900 Library Services and Technology Act (LSTA) Minigrant from the State Library of Ohio to digitize copies of The Cincinnatian, UC’s yearbook, for the period of 1951-2006.

A previous LSTA grant provided for the digitization of The Cincinnatian from 1894-1950, viewable on the Web at http://digitalprojects.libraries.uc.edu/cincinnatian/.  This second project will complete access to all issues of the yearbook via the Web.

Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine Meets for First Time in 30 years

Before the May 26, 2010 meeting of the “new” Cecil Striker Society for the History of Medicine, the Society had last met in 1980, shortly after Dr. Striker’s death.  Recently, as the latest phase of the Winkler Center’s own history began to blossom, the idea of resurrecting the Society made eminent sense.  Cincinnati’s medical history is the envy of most cities, large and small, but with the passing of a generation of physicians and historians who knew and understood their community’s prominent role in medical history, appreciation of this illustrious history began to pass with them.
