Nathan Tallman, digital content strategist and assistant librarian for digital collections and repositories at the University of Cincinnati Libraries, has been selected as one of 13 future library leaders to participate in ILEAD USA – Ohio 2015.

Sponsored by The State Library of Ohio, ILEAD USA is a multi-state program designed to help library staff understand and respond to user needs through the application of participatory technology tools. Ohio participants will join others from Wisconsin, South Carolina, Pennsylvania, Delaware, North Dakota, New York, Maine, Illinois and Utah in this national initiative. Participants are organized into teams, mentors and instructors for the year-long program. Tallman and his team members, Jillian Carney (Ohio History Connection), Shannon Kupfer (State Library of Ohio) and Elizabeth Allen (Bexley Public Library), successfully submitted a proposal for a team focused on digital preservation of Ohio cultural heritage materials. The University [of Cincinnati] has a nice online archive commemorating Armstrong’s time on the faculty.  The collection includes some items from the astronaut’s early life, like his pilot’s log book from the Navy, but mostly it covers in pictures and documents his career in academia.

Celebrate the Lunar New Year in Langsam Library

Enjoy refreshments and entertainment while you participate in interactive activities such as calligraphy, origami, haiku readings and more. Visit the Student Technology Resources Center (STRC) and make a video postcard greeting. Listen to music and play games as you welcome in the year of the goat (or sheep).

Activities will include:

  • Welcome from Xuemao Wang, Dean and University Librarian
  • “Moonloore and the Mountains,” Kevin Grace, University Archivist and Head of the Archives and Rare Books Library
  • Music: Tsun-Hui Hung will play the Erhu (Chinese Violin)
  • Lion Dance performed by Students from the Cincinnati Chinese School at CCCLA
  • Haiku Reading
  • Table Tennis and other fun games
  • STRC Video Post Card
  • Paper-Cutting Display
  • Calligraphy and Chinese Symbol Cutting
  • Origami
  • and, of course, refreshments.

The event is free and open to all.

The Lunar New Year celebration in Langsam Library is part of a Diversity Grant the Libraries received to promote and celebrate diversity throughout the university. The event is supported by the Chinese Mutual-Aid Association and the Japanese & American Student Society and sponsored in part by Ethnic Programs and Services.

Another Addition to Our Documentation of Cincinnati Conservatory of Music's Heritage

Last week we wrote about the wonderful donation of an exterior wall plaque from the Conservatory of Music when it was located in the old Shillito mansion on Highland and Oak Streets.  No sooner than that blog post run that we received a package from another person with a connection to the school.

Florence Lemke of Tucson passed along some memorabilia that had belonged to her late aunt, Rita Moore.  Moore was a Conservatory student in the early 1920s and had a classmate by the name of Minnie Leah Nobles.  Mrs. Lemke sent us the 1921 Senior Annual, which her aunt had obtained from Nobles, along with a class photo.  In the picture, Nobles is the tallest woman in the back row and Moore is in the back row as well, third from the right.  It’s a wonderful image not only in how it depicts coed fashion at the time, but in its look at the Conservatory entrance as well. Newsletter, first published in 2002, contains the latest news and happenings from UC Libraries.

sourceUC Libraries is transforming  technology, people, space and information resources to “become the globally engaged, intellectual commons of the university – positioning ourselves as the hub of collaboration, digital innovation and scholarly endeavor on campus.”

It is in this spirit of transformation that we are changing the way in which we deliver Source to our readers. The online newsletter will still contain the latest information about the organization, people, places and happenings in UC Libraries, but will no longer be produced in print. By moving Source online, we are able to reach a greater number of readers on various devices – computers, phones, tablets and more.

Exhibit Honors Theodore M. Berry – Pioneer. Activist. Leader.

tedberryIMAGES-01In observance of the 50th anniversary of the signing of the Civil Rights Act, UC Libraries have created a display on the 4th floor of Blegen Library celebrating the papers of Theodore M. Berry, noted Civil Rights pioneer, community activist, and elected official from Cincinnati. Ted Berry’s papers represent one of the notable collections in the Archives & Rare Books Library’s Urban Studies Collection.

The Great War Exhibit in Langsam Library

soldierJuly 28th marks the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I. In commemoration, UC Libraries has created an exhibit on display on the 4th floor of the Walter C. Langsam Library. “The Great War: Poems, Movies, Music and Literature Inspired by World War I” showcases the collections of UC Libraries.

Included in the display are references to both popular and classical music to come out of the war such as “Over There,” “It’s a Long Way to Tipperary,” and Benjamin Britten’s “War Requiem.”

Historic Cincinnati Subway and Street Images Available on New Website

b53_f25_p001The University of Cincinnati Libraries have created a website and digital archive that provides access to the historic Cincinnati subway and street images, a collection of over 8,000 photographic negatives and prints taken as part of a failed subway development project in the 1920s, and photographs documenting various street projects from the 1930s through the 1950s.

Available at http://digital.libraries.uc.edu/subway/, the “Cincinnati Subway and Street Improvements, 1916-1955” website includes construction images as well as both interior and exterior shots of private residences and city scenes. In addition to providing access to the historic prints and photographs, the website also documents the story of the failed subway project and includes a construction map with linked images.
