Library Research Guides: Digital Literacy

Libraries provide hundreds of online research guides that point you to tools for all of your research and information handling needs – from finding information to citing sources and publishing the information you created. Some guides are specific to a software product, course or discipline, while others cover a broad range of resources.

This month’s featured guide, Digital Literacy, is a collection of links and tips on finding and evaluating information in digital environments. There is information on how to use online technologies to stay current, organize your citations, files and data, and how to create and publish digital content, as well as how to network and collaborate effectively, protect your online identity, and how to be an ethical and responsible digital citizen.

All these aspects of digital literacy apply to many facets of daily life, but the primary goal of the Research Guide is to equip students with the tools and techniques that would enhance their academic careers and future employment.

National Chemistry Week Books on Display at UCBA Library

Erin Barger created a display in honor of National Chemistry Week being held October 18th-24th.

In honor of National Chemistry Week (NCW), October 18-24, 2015, a collection of chemistry books will be on display and available for browsing and borrowing. This year’s theme is “Chemistry Colors Our World” focusing on the chemistry of food colors, dyes, pigments, fireworks, etc. There are live demos going on all over the Cincinnati area at libraries and the Cincinnati Museum Center. According to the American Chemical Society (ACS), “NCW encourages chemists and chemistry enthusiasts to build awareness of chemistry at the local level. Local Sections, businesses, schools, and individuals are invited to organize or participate in events in their communities with a common goal: to promote the value of chemistry in everyday life.” Visit the ACS website at http://www.acs.org to learn more.

Erin Barger is a Student Assistant for the UCBA Library and also serves as the Vice President of the UCBA Chemistry Club. The UCBA Chemistry Club will be helping with a demo at Deer Park Library on Friday, October 23rd from 4:00 pm – 6:00 pm. Volunteers are welcome.

Join Us for Lunch and a Film: An Interview with Dr. William A. Altemeier

The Henry R. Winkler Center for the History of the Health Professions will be hosting the Impressions in Medicine inaugural event, Lunch and a Film: An Interview with Dr. William A. Altemeier and you are invited.

The event will be held from 12:00-1:00 PM on Tuesday, October 27, 2015 in the Stanley J. Lucas Board Room in the Medical Sciences Building (see map below).

We’ll be airing excerpts from one of the more significant oral history interviews from our extensive collection with an introduction by Secretary of the Henry R. Winkler Center Advisory Board, Dr. William Camm, along with a complimentary lunch and a viewing of an exhibit on the history of Cincinnati General Hospital.

Join UC Libraries October 17 at Books by the Banks

On Saturday, October 17, the 9th annual Books by the Banks: Cincinnati USA Book Festival will take place downtown at Duke Energy Convention Center from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. Once again, UC Libraries is an organizing partner of the literary event that allows readers to meet and greet favorite authors.

The day-long festival will feature over 100 regional and national authors, book signings, author panels and activities for the entire family to enjoy. The popular “Writing and Getting Published” series returns this year with panel discussions covering hot topics for writers and workshops to help hone the craft of writing. Research Guides in the Library

You’ve started a paper or a project, and gathered a couple of great resources on your topic, but now you need more information. One of Clermont College Library’s excellent resources is the research guide.

Research Guides are easy to find. From the library’s home page, look to the left side of the screen and choose Research Guides. You will be directed to a list of guides. By clicking on one of the topics, you will find tabs that direct you to the type of resource you need. For example, if you were looking for scholarly articles on biology, choose the Biology at Clermont Guide, then click on the Articles tab.
