Enchanting Fairy Tales Dressed in Powder and Crinoline

12 Princesses in the WoodsOver the next few months, the Archives & Rare Books Library will open another of our exhibit websites that introduces our extensive collection of fairy tales and folklore for research and teaching.  There are many volumes to sift through, but one I recently pulled caught my eye.  In Powder and Crinoline doesn’t contain any stories with which I was familiar, but when I paged through it, I was more than a little pleasantly surprised.

This collection of stories retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) was first published in 1912 by Hodder and Stoughton.  “Q” was a Cornish writer who was well known for his fiction and anthologies, particularly for his Oxford collection of English poetry in 1900.  In the preface to Powder and Crinoline, he speaks of his first impression of the work: Continue reading →

UCBA Library Hosts November Faculty Social

whiteboardThe UCBA Library faculty hosted the UCBA November Faculty Social on Tuesday, November 15th as a follow-up to our first “Whiteboards and Wine” spring faculty social event. We indulged in excellent refreshments and conversation in the Learning & Teaching Center and also had the pleasure of introducing a special guest and new colleague from UC Libraries, Mark Konecny, Scholarly Communications and Digital Publishing Strategist.

It was a perfect excuse to gather and relax with colleagues as we approach the last weeks of the semester!

We may not have snow outside, yet. But we do have a table set up in the Clermont College Library where students can cut out snowflakes. We’ve provided patterns, paper, and scissors. And we encourage you to use your imagination as well.

       Take a few minutes between classes and snip some snowflakes.

UCan Help! UCBA Holiday Food Drive

UCan Help! UCBA Holiday Food Drive

The UCBA Library and the UCBA Student Nurses Association are teaming up again this year to sponsor the UCBA Holiday Food Drive from Monday, November 14th through Friday, December 9th. Look for donation bins in Muntz Hall Lobby and Commons, and Walters Hall Lobby. Have library fines? For each non-perishable food item brought to the UCBA Library Information Desk, $1 will be subtracted from library fines (up to $5).

Not sure what to donate? Check out the Freestore Foodbank web site for a list of accepted and most needed food items: http://freestorefoodbank.org/take-action/make-donation/donate-food/, and don’t forget to check those expiration dates!

Japanese Pop Culture: Anime at Clermont College Library

The Clermont College Library is pleased to present “Japanese Pop Culture: Anime,” on display November and December in the Peters-Jones’ display case.  Anime, manga and assorted figurines from several popular anime series are now on loan to the library from the personal collection of Victoria Winland.

Do you know the difference between Anime and Manga? Anime and Manga are two different storytelling media. Confusion arises between the two when the same story has been presented in both anime and manga versions. Did you know that you can order graphic novels, manga and anime through OhioLink?

Want to do more than just say hello in a different language? The University of Cincinnati offers an online language learning system called Mango Languages. Mango has over 72 languages plus several English courses geared for
non-English speakers. Mango Languages is available to students, faculty and staff.

You will need to create an account when using Mango Languages for the first time.

Issue 41 describes a new addition to the instrument collection on the mezzanine of the chemistry-biology library. Dating from the early 1970s, this desktop Varian E-4 Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) Spectrometer was donated by Dr. Albert Bobst of the UC Chemistry Department.
