R Workshops in the Health Sciences Library: Coming Soon

In January 2017 the Health Sciences Library will begin to offer workshops on the R programing language and statistical software.

In these workshops participants will learn:

  • the various data types
  • how to install R
  • how to import and export files
  • how to select statistical methods
  • how to perform different statistical analyses on given data
  • how to understand when to choose a statistical analysis for answering a type of research question

In addition, some basic statistical analyses will be covered that include one sample t-test, two-sample t-test, and different types of regression. At the end of both workshops participants will gain a practical experience of using R programming for Data Analysis.

New Exhibit Celebrates Native American Heritage in Our Collections

Installed on the 4th floor of Langsam Library, the exhibit features Native American history and culture resources from the collections of UC Libraries. Included are books, movies, e-journals and online digital collections and databases.

The exhibit was curated by Mikaila Corday and Susan Banoun, both of Content Services in UC Libraries, and was designed by Sami Scheidler, third year design student in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning.

The Digital Analytics Program of the GSA has a website that showcases traffic to federal government agency websites. Analytics.usa.gov (https://analytics.usa.gov/ ) provides a window into how people are interacting with the government online. The program helps government agencies understand how people find, access, and use government services online.

Kay Nielsen: Life Undrawn

A colorful drawing of two people dancing.As mentioned in a previous blog post on the fairy tales in the Archives & Rare Books Library, this blog is about the illustrator of In Powder and Crinoline and many other tales, Kay (pronounced “Kigh”) Nielsen.

Born on March 12, 1886 in Copenhagen, Denmark, Kay was the son of two actors.  His father, Martinus Nielsen, directed the Dagmarteater and his mother, Oda, was highly praised for her work both in the Dagmarteater and the Royal Danish Theater.  Despite his parents’ high standing in the theatre community, Nielsen found his passion in a different art form.  He studied in Paris from 1904-1911 at Académie Julian and Académie Colarossi and after he received his education, he moved to England for five years.  It was during that time he received his first commissioned work as an illustrator. Big Bone Lick Exhibit

UC Libraries is honored to host one of four Cincinnati Museum Center collections currently on display at the university as part of the Curate My Community program while the museum undergoes renovation.

Visit the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library to view Big Bone Lick: A Place of Discovery. From mastodons and sabre-tooth tigers to early American Indians and the Founding Fathers, Big Bone Lick was a gathering place for some of the Ice Age’s most iconic animals, early American hunters and the site of America’s first paleontological expedition, organized by President Thomas Jefferson. The site, and its treasures, continue to be extensively examined by UC researchers.

Dean’s Corner: Fall 2016 Dean’s Advisory Council

This month I held my third biannual Dean’s Advisory Council meeting. The focus of this fall’s meeting was Digital Humanities and Digital Scholarship (DH/DS). The two-day meeting included: a tour of Northern Kentucky University’s Steele Library and College of Informatics; a presentation with the co-leaders of UC Libraries’ new Digital Scholarship Center; a tour of UC Libraries’ Preservation Lab; and a luncheon with guests from across the university, including Interim Provost Peter Landgren, Senior Vice Provost for Academic Affairs Eileen Strempel, and representatives from Student Government and the Graduate Student Governance.

 

 

 

Join the LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook First Phase Users Program

The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, with funding from the University of Cincinnati’s Office of the Provost, is pleased to present the LabArchives Electronic Lab Notebook First Phase Users Program.

LabArchives is the leading secure and intuitive cloud-based Electronic Lab Notebook (ELN) application enabling researchers to easily create, store, share and manage their research data. Far more than an “ELN”, LabArchives provides a flexible, extensible platform that can be easily customized to match your lab’s workflow providing benefits to Principal Investigators, lab managers  staff, post doctoral fellows and grad students. LabArchives can be integrated seamlessly with GraphPad Prism, MS-Office, PubMed, BOX, Learning Management Systems, and a number of other software tools that are used extensively by researchers of the Academic Health Center and University wide. Additionally, the LA ELN works on multiple platforms and devices including Mac, Windows, Android and iPad devices, allowing researchers to store and access their data from virtually anywhere with internet access.

An enterprise-wide license with LabArchives has been obtained for the Academic Health Center (AHC), which includes the Colleges of Medicine, Nursing, Allied Health Sciences and Pharmacy. This provides an unlimited amount of licenses to members of the UC AHC. An additional 100 licenses have been reserved for non-Academic Health Center UC affiliates, and each of these additional licenses will be distributed on a first-come, first-served method. The First Phase will continue until December 1, 2017.

Receive free writing assistance on all documents, including: personal statements, grant applications, reports and articles.
