Updated Agenda for UC’s celebration of National GIS Day

UC’s celebration of National GIS Day (Geographic Information Systems) will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2016.  GIS Day is a partnership of UC Libraries, UC Department of Geography, the UC Joint Center for GIS and Spatial Analysis (GISSA), and (new this year!) the Greater Cincinnati GIS User Group.

Join colleagues for presentations and networking in 201 Braunstein Hall from 8:45am – 12:45pm.  There are a wide range of practical topics — come and go as topics are of interest.

Scholar@UC 2.2 can now import videos from UC’s Kaltura

We’ve just released Scholar@UC version 2.2.0. In addition to many bug fixes, there are several new features available in this new version:

  • Users can now use the “Cloud file” upload tab to import their UC Kaltura videos directly into Scholar@UC.
  • Keyword search has been extended to all descriptive metadata fields.
  • Added Clermont, Blue Ash, and Law Library to the “College” menu option for student work types.
  • On collection pages, the “Search within this collection” button has been renamed “Browse this collection.”

  • To facilitate batch loads and imports of works from other repositories, repository managers can now change work ownership to users who have never logged in.   Once those users login, they will have complete control of their content.

Welcome Jenny Doctor as the New Head of the CCM Library

UC Libraries is pleased to welcome Jenny Doctor as the new Head of the Albino Gorno Memorial Music (CCM) Library. With the agreement of the College-Conservatory of Music, she is also appointed with the academic title of associate professor of musicology.

Doctor comes to UC Libraries from Syracuse University where she had a joint appointment as the director of the Belfer Audio Archive with Syracuse University Libraries and associate professor in the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications since 2012. Prior to that she was a reader in music at the University of York in the UK, and has also served as director of the Britten-Pears Library, a specialist music research library with close links to the British Library. Jerry Sheehan Post’s on Federally Funded Research Results and Accessibility

At the close of the 8th Open Access Week, Jerry Sheehan of the White House Office of Science And Technology Policy blogged about the impact of openly accessible research findings, especially federally funded research.

Three more agencies have announced public access plans (Department of Education (ED), Agency for International Development, and Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI)), bringing the total to 19.  A good resource for understanding the requirements of the plans is the  the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition – http://sparcopen.org/ and the data sharing resource http://datasharing.sparcopen.org/ available through SPARC.

Georgian Researcher Dr. Tengiz Simashvili Visited the UC Libraries

Sponsored by UC’s Office of Research, the UC Libraries welcomed the first IREX scholar, Tengiz Simashvili, with six library faculty members at Langsam on October 25, 2016. Dr. Simashvili is the head of Caucasus Scientific-Research Center at Telavi State University, Georgia. He came to UC with a mission of learning how American universities utilize new strategies and methods to support researchers. As a collection of research hubs on campus, the UC Libraries have a lot to share with him. Continue reading →

Dr. Henry R. Winkler

Thursday, October 27, marks the 100th anniversary of the birth of Dr. Henry R. Winkler. Winkler served as President of the University of Cincinnati from 1977 to 1984.  Among the 29 presidents who have stood at the helm of the University, Winkler remains the only one who also was an alumnus.

He is remembered as a president who “was the epitome of the learned gentleman,” says Kevin Grace, University Archivist at UC’s Archives and Rare Books Library. “He was a very kind man who deeply cared about UC heritage and its academic mission.”

The greatest of Dr. Winkler’s characteristics “was his community involvement,” Grace continued. “He knew that the university needed to be a public servant to the city of Cincinnati and that was the way he conducted his life as well – serving community organizations in the sincere belief that that was the way we bettered ourselves.” Continue reading →
