UC’s First Thesis Comes Home to UC Libraries

Eaton family gives historic documents, including letter from Thomas Jefferson, to UC Libraries

CINCINNATI – Thursday, July 21, 2016 – The University of Cincinnati Libraries today received the thesis of John Hough James, the first graduate of Cincinnati College, now the University of Cincinnati. In addition to the thesis, UC Libraries also received associated research materials, including an 1820 letter from Thomas Jefferson. The rare gift comes from siblings Russell Eaton III, James M. Eaton and Frances Eaton Millhouser, the great-great-grandchildren of John Hough James.

“My siblings and I are pleased to present to the University of Cincinnati our cherished family possessions of John Hough James (JHJ), our great, great, grandfather, the valedictorian of the university’s first class. These possessions include an 1820 letter from Thomas Jefferson to JHJ containing requested source material for his senior thesis, his hand written thesis booklet and his membership in a local volunteer fire company,” Russell said. Looking for Historical Business Data?

In June 2014, The DAAP Library invested in Historical Business Data, Infogroup’s geo-referenced database of historic company records. Data comprises company name, mailing address, SIC and NAICS codes, employee size, sales volume, latitude/longitude and many more variables about each company.

Dr. Xinhao Wang, professor in the School of Planning in the College of Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP), and Jennifer Krivickas, head of the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art & Planning, are exploring the possibility of working with the UC’s Technology Commercialization Accelerator (an internal unit that provides seed funding, commercialization expertise and business connections to launch potentially high-impact entrepreneurial initiatives) to develop a proprietary discovery layer that would help researchers search, analyze and visualize data. Charging Station Now in Health Sciences Library

A goCharge charging station has been installed in the Health Sciences Library Computer lab opposite the computer lab helpdesk.  The goCharge charging station provides a secure locker where you can charge your cell phones, smart phones and tablets.

  • Choose a locker and connect your device to one of the three appropriate cables for your device.
  • Close the locker and press the ‘C’ button.  After a beep sounds enter a four-digit code and press the button with a lock icon.  A beep code will sound to let you know that the locker secured.
  • To retrieve your device just follow the same procedures: press the ‘C’ button, enter your four-digit code and press the lock button.
  • If you forget your four-digit code, go to the Circulation desk for help.

There is no charge to use the goCharge system…

Kennedy Heights Community Council 15th Anniversary Celebration booklet

What do the papers of a local choral director and composer and the records of the Kennedy Heights Community Council have in common?  All these records were added to the Urban Studies collection in the Archives and Rare Books Library in 2014.  Finding aids are now available for both of the collections and they are open to the public for research.

The Urban Studies collection in the Archives and Rare Books Library holds a vast amount of material related to the history of the city of Cincinnati, the city’s neighborhoods, and the people and culture of the city of Cincinnati.  The newest items in this collection help to expand on the history already available within the collection. New Book on the LaSalle Quartet

LaSalle QuartetThe LaSalle Quartet : conversations with Walter Levin (Boydell Press, 2014) has just arrived in the CCM Library. The LaSalle Quartet was in residence in Cincinnati from 1953 to 1987 and is renowned for its performances and recordings  of music of the Second Viennese School, championing of the music of Alexander Zemlinsky, and for commissioning new works from composers Lutosławski, Ligeti and Nono and others.
