Data Focus – Upcoming Workshop “Introduction to ArcGIS Online”

Do you want to know more about working with spatial data? Attend the upcoming workshop “Introduction to ArcGIS Online” on October 7 from 1:30 om to 3:00 pm. Registration and workshop details are available in Faculty Onestop. The workshop is free and open to any Bearcat who wants to learn more about the Ersi Platform ArcGIS Online, how to get an UC Esri account, and how to find data with spatial attributes.

Workshop description: This introductory in-person workshop introduces the fundamentals of web mapping and spatial analysis using ArcGIS Online. No previous GIS or ArcGIS experience is required. ArcGIS Online runs directly in a web browser and is available to participants with a UC login.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to GIS and spatial data, followed by a guided tour of the ArcGIS Online interface. Participants will learn how to sign in, navigate Map Viewer, find and add spatial data, work with map layers and attributes, change basemaps and symbology, and explore geographic patterns.

By the end of the workshop, participants will have experience creating and interpreting a web map in ArcGIS Online and will have a foundation for applying GIS tools to their own research or projects.

The workshop will be facilitated by Le Tu, Research and Data Services GIS research consultant. If you want to explore spatial data and GIS resources deeper after the workshop, Le is available for consultations. Visit the GIS Services lab in 412 Langsam.

Welcome Weiye Li, GIS Research Consultant for Research and Data Services

Weiye is a PhD candidate in Geography at the University of Cincinnati. Originally from Shenzhen, China, he earned both his bachelor’s and master’s degrees in Land Resource Management at China University of Geosciences.

His research focuses on geospatial data science, socio-environmental sustainability, and health geography, with a particular interest in applying advanced modeling and algorithms to understand human–environment interactions. He has contributed to several projects including land management, nature-based climate solutions, and urban perception analysis using street-view imagery, and has presented his work at academic conferences such as the American Association of Geographers (AAG) annual meeting.

As a GIS Collab consultant, Weiye looks forward to supporting others while continuing to expand his analytical toolkit in GIS-related analysis. He can share information, offer advice, and even partner on certain projects (on a case by case basis).

3C GIS Day(s) 2021: Save the Date and Call for Proposals 

Save the Date 

Join us during the week of November 15-19 for a virtual GIS Day program featuring a keynote speaker, lightning talk sessions, and a digital map gallery. This event is free and open to the public, and registration details will be available soon. 

GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems.  It is a powerful research tool that makes use of the geospatial attribute of data.  One of the oldest and most famous examples is the map showing how John Snow was able to determine the source of a cholera outbreak in London from the location of sick individuals.   

 3C GIS Day(s) 2021 is a collaboration between Case Western Reserve University, The Ohio State University, and the University of Cincinnati. 

Lightning Talk Call for Proposals 

The 3C GIS Day(s) planning committee invites submissions for lightning talks (10 minutes) from any faculty, staff, or students affiliated with one of the three organizing institutions. We encourage submissions from any disciplines that use geospatial information in any format, such as agriculture and environmental sciences, geography, engineering, business, health sciences, urban planning, and the humanities and social sciences, among others. We especially encourage submissions from graduate and undergraduate students who would like to showcase their work through a fun and informal presentation opportunity. 

Please submit your lightning talk proposal by Friday, October 15: Lightning Talk Submission Form. 

Information collected during the submission process includes presenter name and affiliation, availability during proposed sessions times, and presentation details (title, brief description, and any collaborators).

As part of this program, we’ll also be organizing a digital map gallery for affiliated faculty, staff, or students to showcase their original cartographic work, including both static and interactive maps. More information and a map gallery submission form will be available in the coming weeks.

July 13, 2-3 p.m. “Getting Published – A Journal Editors’ Panel”  will feature UC faculty and staff who serve as editors on journals discussing how to identify the right journal, avoid predatory journals and how to make the biggest impact with your research and scholarship by publishing more than just the article including data publishing and taking an active role in the publishing workflow.  Jeff Blevins, Theresa Culley, Steve Lang and Victoria Carr are the featured editors. Robert Kuhn, Your Trainer

Robert Kuhn received his PhD at the University of California, Santa Barbara in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, where he  studied the centromeres of yeast. Following a postdoctoral at UC Berkeley/USDA Plant Gene Expression Center, he taught biochemistry, molecular biology and genetics at UC Santa Cruz.  He joined the UCSC Genome Browser project in 2003, where he is now Associate Director, with a particular interest in clinical  genetics.  The Genome Browser is a widely used genomics tool giving access to the genomes of human and more than one hundred  other animals.  Dr. Kuhn’s responsibilities include identifying important datasets for inclusion into the Browser, enabling  researchers through teaching the Genome Browser in workshops and seminars and learning from them how to improve the Browser.
