UC Libraries Information Regarding COVID-19 (novel coronavirus) available online

Effective Saturday, March 14, 2020, UC will suspend face-to-face instruction, lectures, discussion sessions, seminars and other similar classroom settings, and move to remote instruction. This includes face-to-face library instruction. Face-to-face instruction will resume Monday, April 13, 2020.

Library users are encouraged to keep library materials. Fines will not be incurred for UC, OhioLINK or Interlibrary Loan items.

The Libraries have created a web page to provide library service updates and links to online resources – https://libraries.uc.edu/about/covid-19.html.

In this issue of Source, Dean Xuemao Wang writes about how a digital core is part of a 21st-century liberal education.

Two exhibits that highlight women who fought for equality are featured in this issue along with an article by Kevin Grace, university archivist and head of the Archives and Rare Books Library, who writes of Mark Twain’s relationship with Cincinnati, including that quote attributed to Twain about where he hopes to be when the world ends.

This issue announces the exciting comeback of the former popular Authors, Editors & Composers exhibit that will combine with the current Life of the Mind lecture to form one event that will celebrate the achievements of UC’s artists, authors, editors & composers. We announce the 5th University of Cincinnati Libraries Annual Progress Report – A Year of Reflection.

Lastly, we announce two upcoming events – the second Hidden Treasures: An Adopt-A-Book Evening on March 12 and the upcoming annual Cecil Striker Lecture to focus on Dr. Christian R. Holmes and scheduled for May 7.

UC Libraries Closed Monday, Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day

UC Libraries will be closed Monday, Jan. 20 for Martin Luther King, Jr. Day with the exception of the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open 9am-5pm. The libraries will resume normal hours on Tuesday, Jan. 21.

This closing includes the 4th floor of the Walter C. Langsam Library, which will close at 11pm on Sunday, Jan. 19 and re-open at 7:45am on Tues, Jan. 21.

happy holidaysThe faculty and staff of the University of Cincinnati Libraries bring you good tidings of the season and wish you a prosperous and joyful 2020! UC Libraries will be closed for Winter Seasonal Days, Dec. 23-Jan. 1, with the exception of the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open on a limited schedule. A complete list of library hours is available online.

New PubMed Now Available

A new version of PubMed is now available by clicking on “Click here to try the New PubMed!” in the current version of PubMed.  The New PubMed will become the default in spring 2020 and will eventually replace the legacy version.

Be aware that once you click on the link to New PubMed it will become your default on that device or browser with a link to return to Legacy PubMed. 

The UC Libraries’ PubMed links that connect UC full text with PubMed references is not changing. 

The New PubMed design has a more consistent look and feel throughout and a responsive layout compatible with any screen size.  It includes the same features (though some are in different locations) and more.

A few of the New PubMed features include:

  • The ability to cite a reference in AMA, MLA, APA, or NLM format style and then copy or download that citation.
  • The reference abstract and full record view may include the article references, similar articles, and the PubMed Central articles that have cited that article
  • The ability to filter to references with ‘Associated Data’. These references include a link to other NLM or NCBI databases such as ClinicalTrials.gov, GEO (Gene Expression Omnibus), or SRA (Sequence Read Archive) that include data to view and/or download.

UC Libraries Closed Thanksgiving

thanksgiving graphicUC Libraries will be closed Thursday, November 28 and Friday, November 29 for Thanksgiving, with the exception of the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open Friday, November 29 from noon – 5:00pm. Regular library hours will resume Saturday, November 30.

This closing includes the Langsam Library 4th floor space, which will close Wednesday, November 27 at 11pm and re-open Saturday, November 30 at 10am.

Welcome, Katie Hillery, the New Library Services Assistant in the Science and Engineering Libraries

Tuesday, Nov. 12 marks the first day at UC Libraries for Katie Hillery, the new library services assistant in the Science & Engineering Libraries.

Katie has a B.A. in history and classics from Hillsdale College, and recently began the M.L.I.S. program at Kent State University.  She brings a valuable combination of work experience in library operations (public services, technical services) and archives/special collections (including the Hillsdale College archives, Carus Coin Collection, E.O. Grosvenor House archives).

Katie’s primary workspace is in the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library (Braunstein Hall) where she will provide critical operational support and help to elevate our initiatives with STEM special collections.

UC Libraries Closed Monday, Nov. 11 for Veterans Day. HSL to Remain Open 9am-5pm.

veterans day imageUC Libraries will be closed Monday, Nov. 11 in observance of Veterans Day, except for the Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library, which will be open 9am to 5pm.

This closing includes the Walter C. Langsam Library 4th floor space, which will close Sunday, Nov. 10 at 11pm and re-open Tuesday, November 12 at 7:45am.

Normal hours will resume Tuesday, November 12.
