Shillito Hall Comes Home to the UC Campus

For the past few weeks, Mr. Dennis Christine (CCM, Class of 1969), has corresponded with Sue Reller, Mark Palkovic, and me about an old bronze plaque he had. He wished to donate it to us as a piece of University of Cincinnati heritage that he strongly felt should be preserved, and we’re very fortunate that he thought of us because the plaque that reads “Shillito Hall” is a reminder of CCM’s past and its merger with the University of Cincinnati in the 1960s. Yesterday I met him at the gatehouse on Clifton and hauled it in to the Archives & Rare Books Library.
Fall Means Election Time: A Look Back Through ARB’s Issues of the News Record

It’s officially Fall, which means I am writing this post with a pumpkin spice latte in hand. Last week, I wrote about a photo of the UC football team from the late 1800s. While my role is primarily focused on images and photos, I also get to work with historical documents. I love looking through old copies of the News Record, the student-run newspaper here on UC’s campus. You can find digitized copies of the newspapers from 1960 to 1970, as well as 1973 to 1976 by going to http://digital.libraries.uc.edu/newsrecord/. The Archives & Rare Books Library’s intent is that eventually all the years of the newspaper will be digitized, from 1885 to the point where the News Record began electronic issues. Continue reading
Borrow media, popular fiction and more with SearchOhio
Quickly and easily borrow books, CDs, DVDs, and Audiobooks from SearchOhio, a consortium of over 20 Ohio public libraries.
Start your search in the UC catalog and move on to OhioLINK for additional borrowing options. If OhioLINK doesn’t have the title you’re looking for, click the SearchOhio button in the catalog search results to check availability. If another library owns an available copy, select the “Request Item” button and follow the prompts.
STEP 1: Search for an item in our catalog. If you can’t find it or all the copies of the item you’re interested in are unavailable, select the OhioLink button to expand your search.
STEP 2: If you can’t find it or all the copies of the item you’re interested in are checked out, select the SearchOhio button to expand your search to their catalog.
STEP 3: When you find the item you’re looking for click the “Request Item” button and follow the prompts for your library affiliation (U of Cincinnati), your login information (UC ID and Central Service Password) and desired pick-up location. That’s it! You’ll be notified when your item is ready to be picked up.

UC Libraries Launch Source Online
Newsletter, first published in 2002, contains the latest news and happenings from UC Libraries.
UC Libraries is transforming technology, people, space and information resources to “become the globally engaged, intellectual commons of the university – positioning ourselves as the hub of collaboration, digital innovation and scholarly endeavor on campus.”
It is in this spirit of transformation that we are changing the way in which we deliver Source to our readers. The online newsletter will still contain the latest information about the organization, people, places and happenings in UC Libraries, but will no longer be produced in print. By moving Source online, we are able to reach a greater number of readers on various devices – computers, phones, tablets and more.
Troubleshooting Blackboard Issues when Doing Library Research
Are you having problems accessing online Library resources via Blackboard? Try these simple solutions:
SOLUTION #1 – Accepting Certificates
When you are logged into Blackboard and attempting to do research via the Library website (search for articles or use a research guide), you may come across a certificate warning message in the Internet Explorer (Example 1) or Firefox (Example 2) browser such as these:

Be sure to ACCEPT the certificate by choosing to Proceed (unsafe) [Example 1] or Continue [Example 2]
so that you can continue searching. If you do not accept the certificate, you may be blocked from accessing library resources (this also applies to any non-https link posted within Blackboard).
SOLUTION #2 – Do your library research outside of Blackboard by going directly to www.libraries.uc.edu. You should NOT see canopy.uc.edu in the website address/URL.
***Note for Faculty: You can help address this problem by creating Blackboard links that automatically open in a new window outside of Blackboard.

ARB’s " 50 Minute Talk" in October Features Edgar Allan Poe

Last year around Halloween, the Archives & Rare Books Library’s “50 Minutes” program featured Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein, looking at the book’s heritage through illustrated editions as well as viewing the novel in terms of the history of science. It was all part of a rare books tribute to Halloween and iconic fright.
So this year, we’ll continue the tradition of classic scary stuff by discussing Edgar Allan Poe’s dark poem, “The Raven.” How Poe and his poem have been portrayed in pop culture and American literature will be presented, along with some Poe titles from the Rare Books Collection. And since it is all in good fun, what would a Poe program be without plenty of Halloween candy and a few door prizes?
Please join us on Friday, October 17, at noon in 814 Blegen Library. Bring your friends, bring your lunch, bring an appetite for the awful. Throughout October, we’ll also be posting several blogs on this master of the macabre.

Treasures of the Winkler Center: 1843 Botanico-Medical College Diploma of Dr. Henry Randolph Higgins
Through the generosity of Jerry L. Higgins, the Henry R. Winkler Center received an interesting artifact depicting Cincinnati’s rich history of institutions of medical education. This framed diploma from the Botanico-Medical College of Ohio was awarded to Jerry L. Higgins’ ancestor, Dr. Henry Randolph Higgins, and serves as the only artifact in the Winkler collection from the institution.

Hello, and welcome to my first blog! My name is Iman and I’m a student in the College of Business, studying Operations Management. This year, I am working as a research intern in the Archives & Rare Books Library, a cozy nook on the 8th floor of Blegen Library. The ARB Library is a home to the University’s rare books collection, UC archives, hundreds of archival collections, and texts from all over the world. Just an hour of working in this corner of campus is enough to get a glimpse into the history and traditions that have influenced the way our laws are made, the way we interact with others, even the way our society functions.

Tape, Paper, Scissors

Hmmm, what to do with book jackets removed from items in the Cohen Enrichment Collection when the books are sent to the stacks to make room for new titles? Pondering this question while looking out at the 4th floor of Langsam Library and seeing the less-than-attractive concrete columns, inspiration hit — let’s create collages of the book jackets to wrap the columns! To make it even more fun, let’s inquire about a donation of Duck Tape from ShurTech, where Madeline Aerni, a Library peer mentor, was interning this summer.
This proved to be the perfect activity for launching this years’ Langsam Connect event series, Fun, Food and Library Finds. Using tape, paper, and scissors, students created 4’ x 11’ collages from book jackets and Duck Tape, all while enjoying an afternoon snack in the Library. Watch the video capturing the fun, food, friends, and library finds!
Stop by Langsam and check the out the wrapped columns on the 4th floor. You will likely find a book title and call # that you will want to check out and take home with you.
