10/9 High-Performance Computing Workshops: Ohio Supercomputer Center

UCIT and UC Libraries are partnering with the Ohio Supercomputer Center to offer two High Performance Computing (HPC) workshops on Thursday Oct. 9 in 475 Langsam Library (UC west campus).

Interested researchers, students and staff can register at http://webcentral.uc.edu/hslclass/

Introduction to High Performance Computing at OSC, 9:00am-12:00pm

Topics will include:

  • HPC concepts
  • Hardware and Software available at OSC
  • Getting allocations and accounts
  • How to connect and log in
  • How to move data on and off the systems
  • Introduction to batch processing
  • Storage and file systems

Conquering the OSC Batch Environment, 1:00pm-5:00pm

Topics will include:

  • The basics:  Batch Environment, batch file format, job submission, job status, return files
  • Optional resources:  Nodes, cores, memory, accelerators, processing time, software, etc.
  • Our virtual waiting room:  The PBS batch system
  • How to manage jobs
  • How to use batch jobs to perform parallel processing
  • Useful environment variables related specifically to the batch system.

Shillito Hall Comes Home to the UC Campus

For the past few weeks, Mr. Dennis Christine (CCM, Class of 1969), has corresponded with Sue Reller, Mark Palkovic, and me about an old bronze plaque he had.  He wished to donate it to us as a piece of University of Cincinnati heritage that he strongly felt should be preserved, and we’re very fortunate that he thought of us because the plaque that reads “Shillito Hall” is a reminder of CCM’s past and its merger with the University of Cincinnati in the 1960s.  Yesterday I met him at the gatehouse on Clifton and hauled it in to the Archives & Rare Books Library.

searchohio logoQuickly and easily borrow books, CDs, DVDs, and Audiobooks from SearchOhio, a consortium of over 20 Ohio public libraries. ​

S​tart your search in the UC catalog and move on to OhioLINK for additional borrowing options. If OhioLINK doesn’t have the title you’re looking for, click the SearchOhio button in the catalog search results to check availability​. If another library owns an available copy, select the “Request Item” button and follow the prompts. 

STEP 1: Search for an item in our catalog. If you can’t find it or all the copies of the item you’re interested in are unavailable, select the OhioLink button to expand your search.

STEP 2: If you can’t find it or all the copies of the item you’re interested in are checked out, select the SearchOhio button to expand your search to their catalog.

STEP 3: When you find the item you’re looking for click the “Request Item” button and follow the prompts for your library affiliation (U of Cincinnati), your login information (UC ID and Central Service Password) and desired pick-up location. That’s it! You’ll be notified when your item is ready to be picked up.

UC Libraries Launch Source Online

Newsletter, first published in 2002, contains the latest news and happenings from UC Libraries.

It is in this spirit of transformation that we are changing the way in which we deliver Source to our readers. The online newsletter will still contain the latest information about the organization, people, places and happenings in UC Libraries, but will no longer be produced in print. By moving Source online, we are able to reach a greater number of readers on various devices – computers, phones, tablets and more.

Troubleshooting Blackboard Issues when Doing Library Research

Are you having problems accessing online Library resources via Blackboard? Try these simple solutions:

SOLUTION #1 – Accepting Certificates

​​When you are logged into Blackboard and attempting to do research via the Library website (search for articles or use a research guide), you may come across a certificate warning message in the Internet Explorer (Example 1) or Firefox (Example 2) browser such as these:

Be sure to ACCEPT the certificate by choosing to Proceed (unsafe) [Example 1] or Continue [Example 2] 

so that you can continue searching. If you do not accept the certificate, you may be blocked from accessing library resources (t​​his also applies to any non-https link posted within Blackboard).​

SOLUTION #2 – Do your library research outside of Blackboard by going directly to www.libraries.uc.edu. You should NOT see canopy.uc.edu​ in the website address/URL.

***Note for Faculty: You can help address this problem by creating Blackboard links that automatically open in a new window outside of Blackboard.
