Health Sciences Library Services

The Donald C. Harrison Health Sciences Library (HSL) and UC Libraries provide services in addition to journals, books, databases and research guides.  These services include:

  • Monthly classes in the HSL Troup Learning Space – register to attend a variety of classes from REDCap, to Literature Searching, to presentation software like Prezi or Emaze, to citation management systems RefWorks and EndNote.
  • Informatics Lab – reserve this collaborative hands-on learning space where you can work with software like SPSS, SAS, R, Matlab, Satscan, Python, Photoshop and more. Get assistance with statistical work or meet with a Writing Center tutor.
  • Winkler Center Lucas Board Room – reserve this space for meetings or events
  • HSL Computer Lab – use the computers available or your own laptops/devices, get assistance with setting up secure wireless, email and more.
  • Poster Printing – located in the HSL and available to all Academic Health Center students.
  • Data Management Planning – information about DMP. Contact us for assistance with managing research data, preparing a data management plan for a grant submission and more.
  • Scholar@UC – a digital repository that enables the UC community to share research and scholarly work with a worldwide audience.

OSF FOR UC is here

The Researcher Services group, an initiative of UC Libraries with the IT@UC R&D Team, is pleased to announce a new tool for research projects: OSF for UC.

There is no cost to use OSF for UC.  OSF, or the Open Science Framework, an open-source workflow tool appropriate for any discipline and developed by the Center for Open Science.

OSF for UC — osf.uc.edu — is UC’s portal for students, faculty, staff and others who need to manage project files and documents.  Sign-in is easy – go to osf.uc.edu, sign in, choose University of Cincinnati, then your UC 6+2 Central Login.

Through OSF, project teams can assign collaborators (internal and external to UC) and share project documents at a granular level (only share what you want, with whom you want).  Projects managed through the OSF are private by default.  Any or all parts of a project can be made public as desired or required by grant funders or others.

Data Management Planning Workshops

Join the University of Cincinnati Libraries for a series of workshops on data management planning! The workshops will address universal data management best practices for health sciences, science and engineering students and professionals. While much of the focus is on STEM fields, this course will be useful for anyone interested in learning more about data management practices and principles. Each workshop will include a teaching portion and hands on activities. We recommend that registrants attend all three workshops if possible. Workshops will be held in the Health Sciences Library (HSL) Electronic Classroom G005G.

Workshops and Dates:

  • October 13th, 12 – 1:30p – Data Generation and Collection (Data Management Workshop 1)

This hands-on workshop will cover topics such as:  types and formats of data, file naming conventions, Readme files, data templates, metadata, and roles and responsibilities with data.

  • October 20th, 12 – 1:30p – Working with Data (Data Management Workshop 2)

A hands-on workshop that covers topics such as data versioning, data backup, and UC’s new Box system

  • October 27th, 12 – 1:30p – Data Preservation and Sharing (Data Management Workshop 3)

This hands-on, interactive workshop covers important aspects of data at UC and beyond including policies at the University and national levels,  copyright and data, and how UC’s systems (Scholar@UC, Research Directory)  integrate and use data.

Meet the UC Libraries’ Science Informationist

Hello! I am Amy Koshoffer, the new UC Libraries Science Informationist.

I am one member of a team of informationists working to provide research data services and instruction to the UC research community. My primary focus will be on researchers in Engineering and the Sciences, including Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Science, Geology, Geography, Mathematics, and Physics. The informationist team includes others based in the Health Sciences Library (East Campus), including Tiffany Grant, a Research Informationist who is focusing on services to biomedical researchers.

Manage Your Research Identity
Monday, Oct. 21, 2 to 3 p.m.
Learn to manage your research identity using unique author identifiers. This course will provide an overview of ORCID, My ResearcherID, and the Scopus Author ID.

Data Management Planning
Tuesday, Oct. 22, 1 to 2 p.m.
Get introduced to the importance of data management planning with tips for creating a data management plan and an overview of tools in the library to help with the process.

Discovering Datasets
Thursday, Oct. 24, 1 to 2 p.m.
Learn out about data repositories including government data sets, figshare and Dryad.

NCBI Tools
Thursday, Oct. 24, 2 to 3 p.m.
Get information and training on the use of biomedical and genomic information databases of the National Center for Biomedical Informatics (NCBI).
