World Library Tours by UCBA Faculty and Staff

by Lauren Wahman

Whether it’s traveling to a library conference or other professional development opportunity or just exploring the world in our free time, we always love to scope out what’s going on in library land.

It was an easy walk to the Mackinac Island Public Library which has an incredible view of Lake Huron.  It’s visiting the Library of Congress — the biggest library of them all!  It’s time spent at the World War I Museum Library in Kansas City. Perhaps it’s exploring downtown Seattle and grabbing a picture of some cool architecture at the Seattle Public Library.  Maybe it’s exploring history at the Boston Public Library or getting a strategy in place for the life-size chessboard at the Kansas City Public Library. And how about trekking halfway around the world to the beautiful Austrian National Library in Vienna!

We’ve seen some awesome libraries across the country and around the world, but there’s still so much to see!  Where will Lauren, Michelle and Christian go next on their world library tour?

Donald and Marian Spencer: Lives of Love and Social Justice

By:  Sam Whittaker, History Department Intern

Donald and Marian SpencerThe Archives and Rare Books Library recently received a new collection of papers from Marian and Donald Spencer.  For over fifty years, the Spencers fought for educational equity and equal rights with organizations such as the NAACP, the U.S. Commission on Human Rights Ohio Board, and the Cincinnati Board of Education. While processing the papers of Marian and Donald Spencer, I learned a vast amount about their groundbreaking electoral campaigns, keynote speeches, court cases, and community boards. However, I also came to know them as people. Donald and Marian Spencer met while they were both students at the University of Cincinnati, married in 1940, and raised two boys. They spent a great deal of their nearly 70 years of marriage in Cincinnati fighting for social justice and equality in the community. Continue reading

Enchanting Fairy Tales Dressed in Powder and Crinoline

By:  Sydney Vollmer

12 Princesses in the WoodsOver the next few months, the Archives & Rare Books Library will open another of our exhibit websites that introduces our extensive collection of fairy tales and folklore for research and teaching.  There are many volumes to sift through, but one I recently pulled caught my eye.  In Powder and Crinoline doesn’t contain any stories with which I was familiar, but when I paged through it, I was more than a little pleasantly surprised.

This collection of stories retold by Sir Arthur Quiller-Couch (1863-1944) was first published in 1912 by Hodder and Stoughton.  “Q” was a Cornish writer who was well known for his fiction and anthologies, particularly for his Oxford collection of English poetry in 1900.  In the preface to Powder and Crinoline, he speaks of his first impression of the work: Continue reading

UCBA Library Hosts November Faculty Social

by Heather Maloney

whiteboardThe UCBA Library faculty hosted the UCBA November Faculty Social on Tuesday, November 15th as a follow-up to our first “Whiteboards and Wine” spring faculty social event. We indulged in excellent refreshments and conversation in the Learning & Teaching Center and also had the pleasure of introducing a special guest and new colleague from UC Libraries, Mark Konecny, Scholarly Communications and Digital Publishing Strategist.

It was a perfect excuse to gather and relax with colleagues as we approach the last weeks of the semester!

Snowflakes at Clermont College Library

“Everything’s magical when it snows, everything looks pretty. The clothes are great. Coats, scarves, gloves, hats.” –Lorelai Gilmore

We may not have snow outside, yet. But we do have a table set up in the Clermont College Library where students can cut out snowflakes. We’ve provided patterns, paper, and scissors. And we encourage you to use your imagination as well.

Take a few minutes between classes and snip some snowflakes.
