Kellie Tilton Attends the American Library Association’s Midwinter Conference

Over the weekend of January 20th, UC Blue Ash Librarian traveled to Atlanta, Georgia, for the 2017 American Library Association’s MidWinter Conference. Although the purpose for attending was committee work on the Alex Awards, she had the chance to visit the exhibit halls, meet with other librarians (including the Librarian of Congress!), and visit local museums and restaurants.
Below are a few pictures she took on her travels.

- Welcoming the 8,000+ librarians to Atlanta for the 2017 ALA MidWinter Conference.

- The convention center was across the street from Atlanta’s Centennial Olympic Park, commemorating the 1996 Olympic Games.

- I had the opportunity to visit the World of Coke Taste It! exhibit, which had 100+ domestic and international beverages made by Coke-a-Cola. I tried every one. Seriously.

- Total fangirl moment. By chance, some of my committee members and myself got to meet Dr. Carla Hayden, the current Librarian of Congress.

- One of the banners around the convention center was timely – and made an important point.

- I always try to find at least one museum or library to visit. In Atlanta, it had to be the Center for Puppetry Arts museum, which had a number of awesome interactive exhibits. I was pretty excited to see the Jim Henson exhibit, which included Big Bird!

- The entire reason for my attendance at this conference was my involvement with the Alex Awards, which honors the Top 10 books written for adults that have appeal to young adults. This shot is from early Monday morning, when the awards are announced.

The UC Blue Ash Library is kicking off a new series called From The Desk Of… which gives you a chance to peer into our work spaces to see where the magic happens.
Instructional Technologies Librarian, Kellie Tilton has graciously opened her doors to share her workspace and favorite office items with us.

- “This is my office! I live in 115B! Typical thumbs up in a photo.”

- “I take advantage of my metal bookshelf to host an array of photos of friends and loved ones. Also, my office is almost always freezing, so note my heater and two blankets. Office Essentials!”

- “The top two shelves of my bookcase are a place for all my weird toys. Every office needs a TARDIS and a golden snitch, in my opinion. That third shelf is my craft shelf. You never know when you’ll need cardstock, spray adhesive or foam board.”

- “I love the Disney Vinylmation, and like to grab new ones if I’m near the park. I just had a conference in Orlando, so I got some new ones for my office.”

- “Part of my job is to make instructional objects which means I have a fancy mic and soundbooth in my office. And by fancy I mean we made it using a cardboard box and $20 soundproof inserts. But it works! I love it.”

- “I never quite grew out of the collage decorating phase. Postcards, pictures, quotes, comics all live together in a mish-mash. Some of which has traveled with me for years.”

- “These guys chill under my monitor and make me super happy. That bird totally chirps if I whistle at it! The keychain? Adorably angry. And Dancing Groot is just the best. At the holidays, I bring in my Holiday Dancing Groot.”

- “Washi Tape + Chapstick + Pens = Essentials. (That may or may not be every single color of Sharpie pen available.) (I love them.)”

- “I can’t fit all the buttons I get on my lanyard, so up on the bulletin board they go! (Bonus shot of my parents and brother in a photobooth!) (Also, if you haven’t, read The Book Thief. So good.)”

- “The Post-It note collection. I will not be the first librarian to feature this, I promise.”

- “Holiday decorations + co-worker presents live together in harmony all year round on the top of my shelf. The raven’s name is Poe and I dig his party hat.”

- “Theatre is one of my favorite things and I love how colorful these posters are. (Also, that negative space Cinderella in the glass slipper? Love.)”

- “I hate blank walls, so posters are my go-to. The green one with the braids is the entire book of Anne of Green Gables. The Every 4 Years is from the last World Cup. (Normally there is 75% more paper and Post-Its scattered across my desk.)”

- “Don’t be deceived by the blank whiteboard. Come fall, it will be filled with my schedule for the week. Also, my hydration/caffeination station on full display. (DFTBA!)”

- “This is my office chandelier. I may nurse a slight obsession with chandeliers – so shiny! It’s really a Christmas ornament from Macy’s that’s hanging by Scotch tape and a dream. Really classes up the joint!”

UCBA Librarians Attend ALA Annual Conference

UCBA Library Director, Heather Maloney and Instructional Technologies Librarian, Kellie Tilton headed to Orlando, Florida for the American Library Association Annual Conference.
Heather Maloney attended a pre-conference session on Transforming the Contributions of Student Employees in Your Library and thoroughly enjoyed listening to the passionate opening session speaker, Michael Eric Dyson. The exhibit floor was filled with the familiar and the new and probably a few too many giveaways…but how do you say no to a free book?!

Kellie Tilton spent a good chunk of time at ALA sitting in a, thankfully, air-conditioned hotel conference room for her super-secret Alex Committee meetings. She also managed to check out the fireworks at Epcot (sorry, IllumiNations) and had a blast wandering the exhibit hall. Swag she was most excited about? The Ruth Bader Ginsburg tote bag she will add to her collection.

Exploring the UC Libraries

As many may know, the University of Cincinnati contains 13 awesome libraries amongst the three campuses of Uptown, Clermont and Blue Ash. As a librarian at the UCBA Library on the Blue Ash campus, I’ve been to Langsam Library numerous times and have visited a few others due to various meetings. In the two and half years I’ve worked for UC, however, I hadn’t really had the opportunity to really explore many of these collections. Over spring break, I had the chance to get the behind-the-scenes tour in eight of the 13 libraries.
By walking ten minutes across (and up!) the Uptown campus, I went from delighting over the DAAP Library’s vast snowglobe collection to admiring one of the Archive and Rare Books Library’s pre-printing press manuscripts. The resources available to all UC students, faculty and staff in the UC collections are vast, fascinating and one of the many great things about the University of Cincinnati.

- Seek and ye shall find the legend of the Holy Grail in the Archives and Rare Books Library!

- One of the Archives and Rare Books’ pre-printing press manuscripts. This one is titled “Spurious and Doubtful Works.” Sounds really uplifting.

- In the CCM Library, you will find thousands of scores. Tens of thousands. All the scores. Or, at least, a good number of them.

- Is vinyl more your style? Check out CCM’s vinyl collection!

- The CCM Library holds drawers and drawers of cast recordings, orchestras and symphonies. Hours upon hours of happiness.

- The Chemistry-Biology Library’s current display is a fascinating one about historic synthetic dyes. Don’t let the glare from the case fool you, this rainbow of thread and dye is both gorgeous and like something from Harry Potter.

- Deep in the basements of the Classics Library sit these gorgeously bound editions on the Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire.

- The DAAP Library hosts a variety of unique items, including the snow globe collection and the Material Connexion collection.

- The DAAP Library has a number of sewing machines available to use, you just have to B.Y.O.T. (Bring your own thread.)

- This amazing Armstrong Collection display just went up at the Engineering and Applied Science Library.

- SCIENCE! The Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library’s redesigned space is filled with fascinating maps, globes and books.

- The Geological-Mathematics-Physics Library also has some crazy fascinating books. (See also the Geo-Math-Phys book “Magic at Home!”)

- The CECH Library is currently under construction, but the amazing resources (teaching kits! poster printing! ellison dye cuts!) are still available! (And are still awesome.)

- The Engineering and Applied Science reading room isn’t only an amazing place to study, it also has absolutely gorgeous murals and a great view of the Uptown Campus.

- Books in the Oesper Collection are not only super old (the bottom book was written in the 17th century) but incredibly intriguing.

- The Oesper Collection also holds a number of historical Chemistry equipment and chemicals!

- Okay, this isn’t from inside a library. But it is from outside Blegen, which houses Classics, CCM and ARB. And who am I to deny you a squirrel eating pizza?!?
UCBA Library Display Celebrates Martin Luther King, Jr.

Celebrate the life and impact of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. by borrowing a book from the “Remembering Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.” book display in the UCBA Library.
Books on display include titles written by the Nobel Peace Prize-winning King, all volumes of King’s papers and works written about King and his impact on the Civil Rights Movement and his legacy in America’s history.
Continue to read about his life and legacy at The Martin Luther King, Jr. Center for Nonviolent Social Change’s website, the Nobel Peace Prize website or listen to his speeches on the NPR website. Twitter also released the Top 10 quotes by King that were shared in this post.

Welcome, Julie Robinson!

Julie Robinson is the newest member of the UC Blue Ash Library team and will be joining us as the Library Operations Manager. She comes to us from the Health Science Library at Marshall University. Julie has a Master’s in Library and Information Science and in Public Administration. She will be responsible for managing the daily operations of the library to ensure high quality provision of library services.

Here are a few fun questions Julie answered:
Bad Book Habit: Staying up until I’m bleary-eyed to finish a book even when I know I have to go to work the next morning. I’ve been guilty, more than I care to admit, of staying up until 3a or 4a just to finish a really good story because I just don’t know when to quit! But the books were always worth it….
Do you take books with you when you are out and about: I always have at least one book on me at any given time, not to mention the e-books on my Kindle app via my phone. I continually fight the urge to pull my book out of my purse in social situations!
Favorite book I’ve read this year: As You Wish: Inconceivable Tales from the Making of The Princess Bride by Cary Elwes. Hands down one of the funniest reads in a long time for me! As a fan of the movie, I was afraid the book would spoil the memory, but I was dead wrong. It made me enjoy remembering my favorite parts all over again.
Best reading-related memory: The year I received the complete set of the Nancy Drew mysteries. I think I was 10 or so. As my birthday is in early April, spring was just on the horizon. That spring and summer, my mother let me hide out in the trees and barn on my grandparents’ farm and read as much as I wanted.
Do you prefer to keep books or give them away once you’ve read them: I am a total book hoarder. If I buy a book, I can pretty much guarantee it’s mine forever. I love the public library and definitely return them, however, I’ve been guilty of going out and buying it after I’ve read a great one so I have a copy “just in case!”
