Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library Closed on Weekends during Summer

gmp library entranceStarting July 13, the Geology-Mathematics-Physics Library is closed both Saturdays and Sundays for the remainder of the summer semester. Fall semester begins Monday, August 26.

For those seeking a library on the weekend, nearby College of Engineering and Applied Science Library, the Walter C. Langsam Library, and the Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlachter Library for Design, Architecture, Art and Planning (DAAP) all have weekend hours.

Commercial valence block models for use in the lecture hall based on a peg and hole locking mechanism and interchangeable cardboard labels.

Issue 56 describes an unusual type of chemical model known as a valence block that was once used to teach introductory chemistry and which also appeared in chemistry sets in the period 1940-1960.

UC Libraries’ Melissa Cox Norris Elected to ALAO Executive Board

melissa cox norrisMelissa Cox Norris, director of library communication, was elected to the board of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) as public relations coordinator. Fellow incoming board members are:

Board Members-at-Large: Amanda Black; Pamela Espinosa de los Monteros, and Jennifer Starkey

Tracing its beginnings to 1947, ALAO exists to develop, promote and improve library and information services in Ohio’s higher education community, to advance the interests of academic librarianship and the personnel of academic libraries, and to provide leadership and advocacy for the educational and policy concerns of the academic library community in Ohio. ALAO strives to adopt environmentally sustainable practices in all areas of the association.

In this issue of Source, Dean Xuemao Wang writes about the invaluable support of library donors, volunteers and faithful advocates that make events such as the inaugural Adopt-A-Book event, held this past March, a success. We celebrate the latest three publications from the University of Cincinnati Press and the graduation of the second cohort of 56 students from the Joint Co-Op Institute.

Students feature in three articles – one about a pilot program that integrates new technology into the Critical Care Nurse Residency Program (CCNRP) curriculum, a second from a former graduate assistant discussing her experience working in the Digital Scholarship Center, and the third where a student assistant in the Archives and Rare Books Library writes about The Irish Fairy Book.

Lastly, we highlight the mixed materials collection available in the College of Education, Criminal Justice and Human Services (CECH) Library.

Library Databases, Proxy Server and Blogs Unavailable for Maintenance beginning 11pm, Thurs, June 20

Select UC Libraries servers will be updated and rebooted to patch security vulnerabilities. The servers listed below will be rebooted tonight (Thursday, June 20, 2019) at 11:00 p.m. It will take approximately 30 minutes per server to patch and reboot. During this time the server will be unavailable.

Servers to be rebooted:

  • libraries.uc.edu  –  web server (library blogs & apps)
  • lang.uc.edu  –  database server
  • libraries.uc.edu  –   web server (Luna)

Langsam Exhibit Celebrates the History of UC Women’s Lacrosse

lacrosse exhibitIn 2007, the University of Cincinnati’s women’s lacrosse team, coached by Lellie Swords, played its first game. While they lost that game, in the 12 years since they have had many notables to celebrate including a player named All American and current coach Gina Thomas playing for Team USA. in 2018 they joined the American Athletic Conference (AAC), and in 2019 won AAC Freshman and Coaching Staff of the Year honors.

A new exhibit on display on the 5th floor lobby of the Walter C. Langsam Library celebrates the accomplishments and athletes of UC’s women’s lacrosse. Profiles of former players Jessica Kazaks, Michelle Platz, Kelsey Conway, Jen Mott, Meagan Gulmi and Coach Thomas speak on the impact lacrosse has had on their lives – both on and off the field. Books from the collections of UC Libraries highlight lacrosse as well as women in sports and leadership. A bibliography is available at the exhibit and online.

The exhibit was curated by Amy Koshoffer, lacrosse fan and science informationist in the Geology-Mathematics- Physics Library, and was designed by Michelle Matevia, UC Libraries communications department co-op design student.

New Employee at The Robert A. Deshon and Karl J. Schlacter Library at DAAP

Sophie Zhang and Dean Xuemao Wang at Sophie’s Final Presentation

Sufang (Sophie) Zhang, the visiting librarian from South China Normal University (Guangzhou, China) completed her eighteen-month working and research period at the University of Cincinnati. For the first six months, Sophie spent her work time at the UC Press and the Digital Scholarship Center. As the faculty member at the Department of Information Management and Information Systems within the School of Economics and Management, she came with a goal of researching the current landscape of digital humanities centers and services in the United States. During the spring semester, she was able to visit two faculty members in information science at Kent State University and Syracuse University. She gave a final presentation on May 14th, 2019 about her whole experience. We wish Sophie a safe trip home and continuous successful collaboration with her peers in the United States.

Cover of the Irish Fairy BookCeltic lore has always been fascinating to me and to readers worldwide, but oftentimes it is overlooked by Greek and Roman mythology so I thought I would highlight a few of the tales that exemplify Irish mythology and that are part of our holdings in the Archives & Rare Books Library.

Celtic Irish society revolved around the cult of warrior heroes. The most important people in early Irish society, equal even to the kings, were the Seanachie or storytellers. A major part of these bards’ duties was to compose poems in praise of the daring deeds of kings and warriors; hence they were held in high esteem in a warrior society. Continue reading →
